Houston Astros look vulnerable in the AL West. Is anyone ready to dethrone them?
Slowly but surely, the stars of Houston's 2017 World Series-winning team have scattered about in the years since.
George Springer is in Toronto now, Alex Bregman in Boston and Carlos Correa in Minnesota. Justin Verlander pitches for San Francisco. Jose Altuve and Lance McCullers Jr. are still with the Astros, but it feels like it's only a matter of time before Houston's dominance of the AL West comes to an end.
The question is whether anyone else in the division has what it takes to force a changing of the guard.
If it weren't for Oakland's division title in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Houston would have a streak of seven straight AL West championships. Only the Braves, Dodgers and Yankees have had runs that long since divisional play began. But last year, the Astros won just 88 games, their fewest in a full season since 2016. Only the mediocrity of the rest of the division kept them on top.
This year, Houston is 32-27, which puts the Astros on pace to win 88 games again. Nonetheless, they trail first-place Seattle by just a half-game.
The challengers all have their problems. The Athletics had an encouraging start but have lost 17 of their last 18. The Los Angeles Angels look headed to a 10th straight losing season. Texas won it all as a wild card two years ago but has been one of the worst offensive teams in baseball in 2025.
That leaves Seattle. The Mariners have the major league home run leader in Cal Raleigh — yes, he's ahead of both Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge with 23. Seattle also has Luis Castillo leading the pitching staff, but its team ERA is pretty middling at 3.86. Logan Gilbert missed all of May with an elbow issue.

Boston was swept three straight at Milwaukee, with the last two losses coming in walk-off fashion. Christian Yelich hit a 10th-inning grand slam to beat the Red Sox on Tuesday night, and the following day Caleb Durbin ended it with a sacrifice fly.
Boston has lost a major league-high seven games in walk-off fashion — and those games account for over a fifth of their 32 defeats.

Junior Caminero went 4 for 5 with two homers, two doubles, five RBIs and four runs in Tampa Bay's 16-3 rout of Houston on Saturday. Even after a loss Sunday, the Rays have won nine of their last 12 and are just a half-game behind Minnesota for the American League's final wild card.
Comeback of the week
Minnesota trailed Seattle 6-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth Friday night when Willi Castro hit a two-run homer off closer Andrés Muñoz. Then Byron Buxton singled, stole second and scored on a single by Trevor Larnach.
In the top of the 10th, the Twins scored six runs on their way to a 12-6 victory. Seattle had a win probability of 98.9% in the ninth, according to Baseball Savant.
Muñoz had not allowed an earned run all season. He blew another save against Minnesota on Sunday but ultimately got the win.

Sports Pulse Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has reached a long-term agreement with Justin Ishbia that will lead to Ishbia potentially gaining majority or full ownership of the franchise within the next 10 years. The agreement states that Reinsdorf has the option to sell controlling interest of the team to Ishbia from 2029-2033. But after the 2034 season, Ishbia will have the option to acquire controlling interest, and all partial team owners will have the option to sell their portion to Ishbia at the time. Reinsdorf will retain majority control of the franchise at least until the start of the 2029 season. "Having the incredible opportunity to own the Chicago White Sox and be part of Major League Baseball for nearly 50 years has been a life-changing experience,' Reinsdorf said in a statement. "I have always expressed my intent to operate the White Sox as long as I am able and remain committed to returning this franchise to the level of on-field success we all expect and desire." Reinsdorf has owned the White Sox since he purchased the franchise for $20 million in 1981. He is also the owner of the Chicago Bulls, which he gained control of in 1985 for $16 million. Since purchasing the baseball team, Reinsdorf has served as chairman for the organization. Chicago had not been to the postseason in 23 seasons prior to Reinsdorf's purchase of the team, and it returned the the playoffs in 1983. Under Reinsdorf's leadership, the White Sox won the 2005 World Series and six division titles, but the team has been in a freefall since winning 93 games in 2021. The team's season win total has declined every year since then, including a historically bad 2024 season in which it set the record for most losses in a season with 121. The team is currently 19-43 in 2025, last in the AL Central and the second-worst record in baseball ahead of the Colorado Rockies. Who is Justin Ishbia? Ishbia is a billionaire investor that has partial ownership stakes in several sports teams. He is mostly known for being part of the ownership of the Phoenix Suns, as his brother Mat Ishbia is the majority owner of the team. The siblings also own the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. Also a minority owner of the Major League Soccer club Nashville SC, Ishbia already has partial ownership of the White Sox. Under the agreement deal with Reinsdorf "will make capital infusions" for the White Sox in 2025 and 2026 "to pay down existing debt and support ongoing team operations." During the 2029-33 timeframe, Ishbia's brother and his father Jeff Ishbia will also be significant investors into the team. The agreement comes as the franchise explores options for a new ballpark. It had been eyeing "The 78" area in Chicago's South Loop, but those plans seem to be non-existent after MLS club Chicago Fire announced plans to build a new stadium on the grounds. The White Sox play at Rate Field, which has been their home since 1991. Reinsdorf previously threatened to move the White Sox to St. Petersburg, Florida in the 1980s unless the team received assistance on a new ballpark, ultimately getting what he demanded with the 1991 stadium.
