Billionaire Richard Li's FWD Group seeks to raise $442 million in Hong Kong IPO

Reuters6 hours ago

June 26 (Reuters) - Insurer FWD Group , backed by billionaire Richard Li, is looking to raise HK$3.47 billion ($442.08 million) through a Hong Kong initial public offering, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday.
The pan-Asian insurer is offering 91.3 million offer shares in total at an offer price of HK$38.00 apiece.
Lately, Hong Kong listing volumes have rebounded, overcoming subdued activity in the last couple of years with CATL's $4.6 billion raise and Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals' $1.27 billion listing.
Markets are currently on the lookout for online fast-fashion retailer Shein's highly anticipated Hong Kong listing after its London and New York IPO plans fell through.
Reuters had earlier reported that FWD was looking to revive its plans to list on Hong Kong with a target valuation of up to $9 billion, below its aim of at least $10 billion when it last attempted to list in 2022.

Hong Kong home prices little changed in May

HONG KONG, June 26 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's home prices largely stayed flat in May, government figures showed on Thursday, supported by falling mortgage rates. Private home prices edged up only 0.03% in May from the month before, following a revised 0.5% rise in April that ended four months of decline, data from the Rating and Valuation Department showed. The prices have dropped 0.9% so far this year to their lowest level since 2016. Home prices in Hong Kong, one of the world's most unaffordable cities, have tumbled nearly 30% from a 2021 peak, hurt by higher mortgage rates, a weak economic outlook, and poor demand as many professionals have left the territory. Authorities tried to prop up the sector last year, lifting all curbs on property purchases and relaxing down payment ratios, but housing demand has remained soft. The one-month Hong Kong dollar interbank rate HIBOR , which many mortgage plans are linked to, hit a fresh three-year low last week, making mortgage rates more affordable for home buyers. Realtors forecast home prices in 2025 could rise or fall by 5%, depending on the pace of official rate cuts and the severity of trade tensions between China and the United States. Martin Wong, director of real estate consultancy Knight Frank, expected the property market to bottom out in the second half due to more rate cuts. Morgan Stanley last week said the Hong Kong residential market could be at the onset of an up-cycle that could last for four to five years, because of improved home affordability, more home buyers from mainland China, coupled with less land supply, and low mortgage rates.

North Korea opening a tourist site on its east coast next week that's key to its tourism hopes

North Korea next week will open a signature tourist site on its east coast that it called a prelude to a new era in its tourism industry, though there is no word on when the country will fully reopen its borders to foreign visitors. The Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone has hotels and other accommodations for nearly 20,000 guests who can swim in the sea, play sports and other recreation activities and eat at restaurants and cafeterias on site, state media said. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toured the site and cut the inaugural tape at a lavish ceremony Tuesday, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday. He said its construction would be recorded as 'one of the greatest successes this year" and called the site 'the proud first step' toward realizing the government's policy of developing tourism, according to KCNA. The Wonsan-Kalma zone will begin service for domestic tourists next Tuesday, KCNA said. But it didn't say when it will start receiving foreign tourists. Kim has been pushing to make the country a tourism hub as part of efforts to revive the ailing economy, and the Wonsan-Kalma zone is one of his most talked-about tourism projects. KCNA reported North Korea will confirm plans to build large tourist sites in other parts of the country, too. But North Korea hasn't fully lifted the travel curbs, including a ban on foreign tourists, that were imposed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting from February 2024, North Korea has been accepting Russian tourists amid the booming military and other partnerships between the two countries, but Chinese group tours, which made up more than 90% of visitors before the pandemic, remain stalled. In February this year, a small group of international tourists visited the country for the first time in five years, but tourist agencies said in March that their tours to North Korea were paused.
