SINGAPORE – Singaporeans travelling to the US should contact the US Embassy in Singapore to keep up with the latest developments and comply with the official visa entry requirements.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), in response to queries, said on May 30 that Singaporean students can also keep abreast of the latest updates on the documents needed to enter the United States.
MFA said: 'Students are also advised to stay in touch with their International Student Services offices regularly for updated information on entry requirements for international students.'
In recent days, there has been a flurry of changes involving visa requirements for international students, as part of efforts by the Trump administration to implement a hardline immigration agenda.
Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent out a cable to the country's overseas missions directing them to stop scheduling new appointments for student and exchange visa applicants.
The US government also has plans to issue guidelines on 'expanded social media vetting'.
On May 28, Mr Rubio said the US will start 'aggressively' revoking visas of Chinese students, although he did not specify when the revocations would begin.
Singaporeans in the US can contact an overseas mission if they require consular assistance during their travels, MFA said.
The overseas missions are as follows:
Singapore Embassy in Washington, DC
+1-202-537-3100
+1-202- 537-3100 extension 140 (for after-hours assistance)
+1-202-436-4777 (for after-hours assistance)
+1-202-412-0074 (for after-hours assistance)
singemb_was@mfa.sg
Singapore Consulate-General in San Francisco
Singapore Consulate in New York
Singapore Honorary Consulate in Miami
Sing aporeans can also contact MFA's 24-hour hotline, on either 6379-8800 or 6379-8855.

REUTERS/Abdul Saboor PARIS - Five Jewish institutions were sprayed with green paint in Paris overnight and an investigation has been opened, a police source said on Saturday. Police found the paint damage early on Saturday on the Shoah Memorial, which is the Holocaust museum in Paris, three synagogues and a restaurant in the historic Jewish neighbourhood of Le Marais, the source said. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on X that he was disgusted by these "despicable acts targetting the Jewish community". It was not yet known who committed the damage, or why. The Interior Ministry did not respond to a request for comment on details of the incidents. France has seen a rise in hate crimes: last year police recorded an 11% rise in racist, xenophobic or antireligious crimes, according to official data published in March. The figures did not break down the attacks on different religions. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Germany's Merz heads to US for talks on Ukraine, trade, Middle East

PHOTO: REUTERS Germany's Merz heads to US for talks on Ukraine, trade, Middle East BERLIN - Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz will on June 5 meet US President Donald Trump for talks at the White House with the Ukraine and Middle East conflicts, as well as rocky trade relations, on the agenda. The talks will focus on relations between the two countries, German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said on May 31, as well as 'the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and trade policy'. The talks will be the first time the two leaders have met and mark Mr Merz's first official visit as Germany's new Chancellor. Mr Trump has rattled Europe with shifts in security and trade policy since returning to the White House, including an array of tariffs on European partners. Speaking at the WDR Europaforum conference on May 26, Mr Merz said the European Union could retaliate with measures against US technology companies or other tariffs if the transatlantic trade conflict escalates. 'We shouldn't react heedlessly and hectically,' Mr Merz said. 'But if we can't do anything else, we would need to use this tool.' At the same time, Mr Merz's government, which last week said it would help Kyiv develop long-range missiles, wants to make sure that Washington will not walk away from Ukraine whilst it is at war with Russia. Mr Merz and Mr Trump have already had several telephone conversations, with the two earlier in May agreeing to visit each other, without giving dates. Hamas says Witkoff's Gaza ceasefire proposal must lead to the end of the war

REUTERS/Ebrahim Hajjaj Hamas says Witkoff's Gaza ceasefire proposal must lead to the end of the war CAIRO - Hamas said on Saturday it had responded to a ceasefire proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to mediators and included a demand for an end to the war, which had previously been a red line for Israel. The Palestinian group said in a statement that under the deal, it will release ten living hostages and 18 bodies in return for Israel's release of a number of Palestinian prisoners, comments in line with Witkoff's proposal. The Hamas statement added: "This proposal aims to achieve a permanent ceasefire, a comprehensive withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and ensure the flow of aid to our people and our families in the Gaza Strip." It said its response came "after conducting a round of national consultations". The statement did not mention that it was seeking any changes in the proposal, but a Palestinian official familiar with the talks told Reuters that Hamas sought some amendments while its response was positive. The Israeli Prime Minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Israeli media reported earlier this week that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the families of hostages held in Gaza that Israel had accepted the deal presented by Witkoff. The prime minister's office declined to comment at the time. Deep differences between Hamas and Israel have stymied previous attempts to restore a ceasefire that broke down in March. Israel has insisted that Hamas disarm completely, be dismantled as a military and governing force and return all 58 hostages still held in Gaza before it will agree to end the war. Hamas has rejected the demand to give up its weapons and says Israel must pull its troops out of Gaza and commit to ending the war. Israel launched its campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas attack in its south on October 7, 2023, that killed some 1,200 people and saw 251 Israelis taken hostage into Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. The subsequent Israeli military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, Gaza health officials say, and has left the enclave in ruins.
