‘We do it ourselves': Project Mayhem returns to Boardman
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Rock music, spectacular lights and songs from several decades: It's Project Mayhem at Boardman High School, performed by student musicians.

The high school's family-friendly annual concert returns Friday night at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The show is nothing less than a professional rock concert with all of the students auditioning to be a part of it. The students sing all of the songs, play all of the instruments, and put on a show packed with intense musical energy.
'We have an incoming group of people, which they've really stepped up to the plate. Last year, we had an amazing array of singers and performers, but they've definitely stepped up this year,' said Boardman High School senior Julianna Douglass, who plays the electric violin in the show. 'Project Mayhem is a rock orchestra. We have the four core instruments — violin, viola, cello, bass — and then they're electrified.'
You'll get to rock out to drums, singers, guitarists and an array of songs for everyone from different decades, like 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' by the Beatles and 'Come As You Are' by Nirvana. It's something the students not only have to audition for but also start rehearsing for months in advance.
'We start from the very first week of school, and we do it once a week, and then around this time, we're here every day for hours, and it pays off, though it's really tough,' said Douglass. 'I really love that when it comes down to the show, it's student-run. We do it completely ourselves, like we do it, start to finish. And then you feel like I did this, you know, like we did this as a group.'
All of the money is reinvested into the program.
'Pretty much all the money we make with these concerts goes back into equipment for these concerts. This year, we bought in ear monitors for the singers and the guitar players,' said Bill Amendol, who is one of the orchestra directors with the school. 'One of our goals is to give these kids the experience of using professional gear — using it, operating it, learning how to work with it, so that's part of the education piece.'
If you want tickets, you need to get them now because the school is projecting another sell-out performance.
Tickets can be picked up at Boardman High School between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the front entrance of Boardman High School. Tickets cost $10 each and can be paid for by cash or check only.
The Boardman Orchestra's Project Mayhem is on Friday, March 28, at the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center at 7777 Glenwood Avenue. The show starts at 7 p.m. and is one performance only. For more information, head to BHS.Boardman.K12.oh.us.

'This is bragging, I shouldn't do it, but he said, 'Jeff, Jeff Goldblum, I love Jeff Goldblum. Come here, Jeff, let's take a picture,' and all that stuff.' 'It made my life and my year,' he continued. Goldblum arguably has one of the most distinct manners of speaking and an effusive personality that has made for some of the funniest talk show appearances over the years. On Thursday, he jokingly presented Meyers with his own, refined jaywalking technique. The actor-turned-musician appeared earnest while reflecting on his chance encounter with McCartney, however, and vividly recalled the Beatles' 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' and 'She Loves You' hitting the airwaves in 1964 when he was '12 or 13.' Goldblum has performed his own music with his Mildred Snitzer Orchestra ensemble for more than a decade now. Weathersfield celebrates longtime summer tradition
WEATHERSFIELD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Weathersfield Township's Flag Day Festival continues Friday night with the community parade kicking off at 6 p.m. The annual event is held at the township's community park on Route 46. It includes games, food, prizes and entertainment. More: Valley summer events 2025 On Friday night, RDNA is taking the stage from 7-11 p.m. Township officials say this version of the event has been taking place for more than a decade, but its roots date back to the 1960s as the Mineral Ridge Fireman's Festival. 'It's kind of our unofficial start to summer here in Weathersfield,' Trustee Ed Whittaker said. 'I think a lot of families look forward to it, as realizing it's always the beginning of June, it's usually something to look forward to. It's a great community and family event.' The three-day festival concludes Saturday with a day filled with festivities. Wicked star Jeff Goldblum reveals that once celebrity he was 'very starstruck' by
Jeff Goldblum was "very starstruck" when he got to meet George Clooney for the first time. The 72-year-old actor has worked with A-listers such as Julia Roberts, Matthew Broderick and Ariana Grande over the course of his decades-long career in film, but admitted that he was very taken aback when he got to see the Ticket to Paradise star backstage at his Broadway show Good Night, and Good Luck alongside Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney. Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he said: "I was very excited. After the play, I was looking and [McCartney and I] both got a chance to go backstage and meet George and the cast. "I saw him in the flesh for the first time ever, and there he was. "I just thought 'My golly, I'm very starstruck,' because he means a lot to me." The Wicked actor described George as being "very nice" to him and couldn't help but "brag" in revealing that it was the former ER star who asked him for a picture, as opposed to the other way round. "He was very is bragging, I shouldn't do it. "But he said, 'Jeff, Jeff Goldblum. I love Jeff Goldblum. Come here, Jeff, let's take a picture,' and all that stuff. "It made my life and my year." Meanwhile, Jeff was full of praise for the Beatles and recounted discovering the rock band - which also consisted of John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison - in his early teen years. He added: "Everybody, you've all got stories like this." "But I was a kid when I Want to Hold Your Hand and 'She Loves You, came out. "And I remember Suzy Connolly ... in her cut-off jean shorts, and I was like 12, 13... "And they went, 'Here, come and listen to this song.' It's all mixed in my nostalgic bosom in a way that's very, very exciting and meaningful."
