THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES
DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.
Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland's first 'shopping frenzy'.
During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne's 'Better Value' bargains.
Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 - starting with apples and oranges.
The retailer said: "Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.
"Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.
"Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas."
The retailer's first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.
They added: "In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.
"Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England."
Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Love Island 2025: Stars issue word of warning to Irish contestant Megan ahead of tonight's start

More info Love Island star Toby Aromolaran has said the reality TV show doesn't work anymore for people going into the villa just to have a platform. Toby, 26, was a runner-up on the seventh season of Love Island in 2021 and appeared on Love Island: All Stars. But speaking to us as Love Island revealed a new batch of contestants ahead of this year's series, including Dubliner Megan Forte Clarke, the UK star said people will be "found out" if they're not on the show to find love. He said: "I think the guys going in, I think you're going in there for love, really, you know? Because I don't think there's anything really out here for guys anymore. "I think some girls are still going on, like, just trying to do, like, the platform thing." All Star finalist and Dubliner Catherine Agbaje added: "I feel like you still need to go in there finally, yeah, if your intentions aren't real or people sniff you out." (Image: ITV) Toby said: "Once [that] starts happening, people will turn on you." Catherine added: "Go in and try to find love. You can't plan your future." Toby, however, admitted he found it hard to balance bro-code and friendships during his time in the villa. "I would've said that you're in there for yourself, personally, to find love," he said. "At the end of the day, they're your friends, they're not going to be in your relationship. "But also, I do feel like you need to sieve through and be like, 'If that's my best friend in there, I'm not going to go for his girl'. That's bro-code in a way". Toby admitted: "Someone's going to be sad, you just need to choose who you want to be sad!" "Do you want it to be the girl, do you want it to be the guy, do you want it to be yourself? So, you have to just choose," he laughed. The pair previously opened up about Megan Forte Clarke heading into the villa tomorrow night. The 24-year-old panto star has already been compared to former bombshell Maura Higgins. Speaking about Megan, Catherine said: "Dubliners are friendly, and she'll get along with everyone. I'm just happy to see someone from Dublin again in the villa. I feel like you need a Dublin person." Speaking about Megan, Toby admitted he doesn't know if English guys can deal with Irish girls. "The thing is can English guys deal with Irish girls? You know?" "Yeah, we're feisty," said Catherine laughing. Catherine said being Irish going into the villa is a culture shock at first. "I feel like obviously being from Ireland, going into the villa, you don't know what to expect, because, obviously you don't know it's a whole different culture out there," she said. "You know, it's a whole different set of rules. But I feel like she'll be fine, like I feel once you go in there yourself, you make friends with the girls. "And Irish girls are such 'girls, girls'. So I feel like she will be a 'girl's girl', and that will stand to her," she added. Catherine and Toby were speaking ahead of Love Island returning to Virgin Media Two tonight at 9pm. Kneecap and 80s legend Paul Weller share a cuppa in Dublin

The 'modfather' was pictured with two of the three band members at Phibsborough's Bang Bang Cafe on Thursday night. Móglaí Bap, DJ Próvaí and the band's manager Daniel Lambert were reportedly celebrating with Paul after their Irish language film nabbed the top prize at the Celtic Media Awards. Set in west Belfast, the film tells the story of how Mo Chara, DJ Próvaí and Móglaí Bap came together to 'change the sound of Irish music forever". The self-titled movie was awarded the Spirit of the Festival at the celebration of media throughout the Celtic nations and regions. Weller was one of 40 acts who signed an open letter opposing what they claim were efforts to censor the trio due to their political statements during performances. Sharing the snap to Instagram, Bang Bang cafe received numerous messages of support for the musicians, with one writing: 'As if we don't already love Weller enough'. 'Not one bit jealous! Paul Weller is just the greatest!,' added another. Rapper Mo Chara whose real name is Liam Óg ÓhAnnaidh, was handed a terrorism charge by UK police late last month. It follows allegations that a Hezbollah flag was displayed at one of the band's concerts at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, last November. The 27-year-old is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on June 18. ADVERTISEMENT In a statement posted on social media, Kneecap said: 'We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves.' Counter-terrorism police previously also investigated Kneecap after videos emerged allegedly showing the band calling for the deaths of MPs and shouting 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'. The group apologised to the families of murdered MPs but said footage of the incident had been 'exploited and weaponised', and also said they have 'never supported' Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. In response to the charge, the group said in a social media statement: '14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us. 'We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves, this is political policing, this is a carnival of distraction. 'We are not the story, genocide is, as they profit from genocide, they use an 'anti-terror law' against us for displaying a flag thrown on stage. A charge not serious enough to even warrant their crown court, instead a court that doesn't have a jury. What's the objective? 'To restrict our ability to travel. To prevent us speaking to young people across the world. To silence voices of compassion. To prosecute artists who dare speak out. 'Instead of defending innocent people, or the principles of international law they claim to uphold, the powerful in Britain have abetted slaughter and famine in Gaza, just as they did in Ireland for centuries. Then, like now, they claim justification. 'The IDF units they arm and fly spy plane missions for are the real terrorists, the whole world can see it.' The controversy has not stopped their rising popularity and they are set to play one of the biggest dates in their career to 12,500 fans at London's Wembley Arena next September 18. Kneecap were cancelled from the TRNSMT concert line-up in Glasgow, which they were due to play in July, due to safety concerns from UK police according to the festival. However, Glastonbury has confirmed band will not be cancelled from the festival and have put the group on a larger slot on the Saturday afternoon at West Holts Stage.
