ONE Championship: Nong-O open to fighting friends Superlek, Rodtang in title bid
At 38 years old, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao has already achieved more than most fighters could dream of – but the former ONE bantamweight Muay Thai champion isn't done just yet.
'I really want to become a champion again before I retire,' he told the Post. 'That's the No 1 thing that I've been thinking about.'
Last month in Bangkok, Nong-O returned to winning ways by beating rising Thai star Kongthoranee Sor.Sommai in a closely contested rematch. It was his second appearance at flyweight in ONE Championship, following a split decision loss to the same opponent in his debut at the weight.
He said the change in weight class has made him feel sharper and more comfortable in the ring.
'I feel like I am faster and the flow is better,' he said. 'Moving down to flyweight, I've gotten to face opponents who are kind of like the same height, the same body type as me, so I think it's better.'

The win helped silence critics who have questioned his ability to keep up with the younger generation.

Britney Wong locks horns with Zac Purton as dirt premiership goes down to the wire at Sha Tin
Britney Wong is enjoying a brilliant season on the dirt at Sha Tin. Photos: Kenneth Chan Narrow championship leader Britney Wong Po-ni and Zac Purton will resume their fight for the unofficial dirt premiership at Sha Tin on Saturday. Wong, 26, has been the woman to beat on Sha Tin's all-weather this season, posting eight winners from 58 rides on the surface. That accounts for 44 per cent of her winners for the entire campaign and she has rides in both of Saturday's dirt races as she looks to extend her narrow one-win lead with six dirt races remaining this season. On paper, things are made easier for Wong thanks to Purton only riding in one of the two races, but the champion jockey has the best chance of the pair thanks to topweight Fun N Fun Together in the Class Four HKU Faculties Of Dentistry And Social Sciences Handicap (1,200m). Favourite goes under! 😱 1.3 market elect Rising Force tastes a first defeat at his second start as Fun N Fun Together leads throughout under champion jockey @zpurton... @FCLOR_RACING #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 18, 2025 The Charm Spirit galloper was a last-start winner over course and distance, with Purton dictating matters to a tee off the front to get him off the mark at the 11th attempt. He is now 7lb higher in the ratings as a result, but he remains unexposed and he is drawn better than last time in stall five. In the same race, Wong also rides a last-start course and distance winner in Patch Of Watch, who is going for a third victory on the dirt. The Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained five-year-old routed his rivals on wet dirt four starts ago and returned to winning ways with another clinical performance last month. Britney Wong wins the first two races! 🔥 Our apprentice grabs an eighth victory on the dirt course this season as she guides Manfred Man's Patch Of Watch to a second career success... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 18, 2025 Wong got to the lead soon after the start and increased the tempo on the turn into the home straight, with the pair soon kicking into an unassailable lead. She is unlikely to get the same luxuries here with Purton almost certain to either tackle her for the lead or sit on her shoulder, but with rain forecast and Patch Of Watch certain to relish it, that does level the playing field. The other dirt race on Saturday's card, the Class Three HKU Jockey Club Student Villages Handicap (1,200m), will give Wong the opportunity to snag an unanswered winner with Purton on the sidelines. She rides Chris So Wai-yin's Justify galloper Mask Rider, who has raced exclusively on the dirt in six local starts since joining So from Australia. Britney Wong has built up a great partnership with Manfred Man this season. That is no surprise, as he was a five-length synthetic winner at the Gold Coast in September 2023 and clearly relishes the surface. He made a winning local debut under Keagan de Melo over course and distance in January but has found life tougher since an 8lb rise for the comfortable success. In his past two starts he has been ridden by Wong but has struggled from wide draws, finishing sixth on both occasions. Drawing barrier four will help on this occasion and a 2lb drop in the weights is another positive. The business end of the season has been made much more complicated for Wong, who will miss the meetings on June 28 and July 5 due to suspension. The 10lb apprentice is seven winners away from losing her initial claim thanks to a brilliant first season in Hong Kong where she has ridden 18 winners so far.

Hong Kong footballers aim to keep fans flocking to Kai Tak, goalkeeper Yapp says
Goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai said Hong Kong's players had felt under pressure to rise to the occasion on their debut at Kai Tak Stadium this week, to turn the thousands who flocked to the new venue into regular attendees. Advertisement More than 42,000 people watched Ashley Westwood's team dramatically beat India 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday, courtesy of a late penalty from Stefan Pereira. Four-figure home attendances have been the norm during Yapp's 15-year international career, but the switch to the new stadium, which officially opened in March, drew a number that hinted at untapped local interest. Yapp said the much larger Kai Tak crowd 'gave us power', and Hong Kong's chances of reaching the 2027 Asian finals would be boosted by playing their two remaining home qualifiers at the 50,000-capacity ground. 'It was one of my best nights playing for Hong Kong, but before the game I felt pressure,' Yapp said. Supporters unfurl a huge banner at Tuesday's match. Photo: Elson Li 'We knew a lot of fans were joining the party, and that the result would affect attendances after this game. We all wanted to win to convince them to come again.

David Hayes desperate to keep fading trainers' championship hopes alive at Sha Tin on Saturday
For David Hayes, the equation is simple if he is to keep his faint hopes of a late charge at the trainers' championship alive. 'I need to be training more winners than John [Size] at the next few meetings to have a sneak of a chance,' said Hayes, who trails Size by eight wins with only nine meetings left this season. 'It's highly unlikely but I haven't given up, for all that I'm a realist. If he equals me or worse on Saturday, I'll hoist the white flag.' A two-time champion Hong Kong trainer, Hayes cut Size's double-digit lead to as little as four wins last month before the latter struck back to regain breathing space. After the Australian handlers came up empty at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, they turn their attention to Sha Tin on Saturday with 26 runners between them. David Hayes has a double! ✌️ Solid Shalaa makes it consecutive wins with @elliswong05 at Sha Tin, prevailing in the Members Cup over Packing Bole... 🏆#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 18, 2025 Dirt specialist Solid Shalaa, who bids for a hat-trick of victories in the Class Three HKU Jockey Club Student Villages Handicap (1,200m), and the in-form World Hero are among Hayes' leading chances, while hat-trick seeker Ping Hai Comet shapes as one of Size's best contenders. The prospect of a wet track – with heavy rain forecast on Saturday – threatens to throw a spanner in the works, but Hayes said it won't be an issue for Solid Shalaa. 'He loves the dirt and if all this rain does come, he loves wet dirt as well,' Hayes said. 'I expect him to be one of the favourites and justifiably so – he's on the upgrade.' Returning from almost a year out of racing because of multiple leg injuries, Solid Shalaa followed a first-up second with a pair of fast-finishing victories on dirt under in-form apprentice Ellis Wong Chi-wang. Wong will have to produce another top ride on the Shalaa gelding, who has drawn wide in barrier 10. Rising Force, an outstanding debut winner and unlucky second last start for Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, Mr Energia and Packing Bole look to be his main dangers. World Hero, who has made all in two of his past three starts, must also overcome a wide gate in 14 in the Class Four Hong Kong University Alumni Association Challenge Cup (1,400m). 'He's in great form – he had a class rise and he did get a beautiful ride to win the other day,' Hayes said. 'He gives himself every chance by putting himself on the pace and should run well again.' Hayes will also be represented by Tomodachi Kokoroe and Harmony N Blessed in Saturday's feature, the Class Two HKU Business School And Faculty Of Engineering Handicap (1,200m). 'They are two warhorses for the stable,' said Hayes of the pair, who dead-heated for third behind Kaholo Angel at Happy Valley last start. 'They are at their marks at this stage of their careers but I'd expect them both to get prize money. You never know, if they get the right runs, they're more than capable of winning, though it's a tough class for them. 'I'd lean towards Harmony N Blessed if the going gets soft, but I'd be favouring Tomadachi Kokoroe if it isn't.' Size boasts three of the 11 runners in the race – Wunderbar, who can improve from a last-start eighth in what was his first run in four months, the consistent Raging Blizzard and Must Go, who is better known as a dirt horse. Dashing Maurison, Field Marshal, Sight Happy, Star Brose, Youth Power, Star Mac, Ariel and Supreme Mastermind are Hayes' other runners.
