Government of Canada creating thousands more job opportunities for youth this summer

THUNDER BAY, ON, June 6, 2025 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is creating up to 6,000 more Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) opportunities to help build a strong Canadian economy and secure good jobs for youth. CSJ provides a first job experience for Canadian youth that can help shape their future education, training, and career choices. While CSJ was on track to create 70,000 jobs for youth this summer, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, today announced up to 6,000 more Canada Summer Jobs opportunities. This will unlock new opportunities for Canadian youth and help our country build the strongest economy in the G7. The Minister made the announcement during a visit to Wataynikaneyap Power's head office on Fort William First Nation in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Wataynikaneyap Power is leading the Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project, which is a partnership of 24 First Nations working together to connect 17 remote communities currently powered by diesel. The organization has already hired an electrical engineering technologist thanks to funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program. The 2025 Canada Summer Jobs hiring period is well underway in communities across Canada. From now until July 21, 2025, young job seekers between the ages of 15 and 30 can find local job opportunities on the Job Bank website and mobile app. Youth can apply for summer jobs in fields that interest them, such as the recreation sector, the food industry and marketing and tourism. Jobs are also available in a variety of high-demand and growing fields, including housing construction and environmental protection. Quotes We've added up to 6,000 more summer jobs this year – bringing the total to 76,000 across the country. The Canada Summer Jobs program helps young people get meaningful, paid work experience that builds skills, confidence, and connections. It also gives small businesses and not-for-profit organizations the staff they need to grow and serve their communities through the busy summer months. This is a smart investment in our economy and in the next generation of leaders – because when young people get a strong start, all of Canada benefits." – The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario "The Government is taking action to support more young people through the Canada Summer Jobs program. A good summer job not only provides valuable work experience, but also helps to build confidence and self-esteem. I invite all young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 to go to Job Bank and look for Canada Summer Jobs opportunities in their community." – The Honourable Anna Gainey, Secretary of State for Children and Youth "Wataynikaneyap Power is majority-owned by 24 First Nations, with a goal of 100% ownership in 25 years; a goal which is supported by the partner, Fortis Inc. Capacity-building, including employment and workforce development, is part of this vision. There is a huge need to recruit and retain professionals and create a stronger workforce in many sectors. A strong commitment will be needed to achieve this. We appreciate the Canada Summer Jobs program funding that has assisted Wataynikaneyap Power in hiring five students since 2022. Our Peoples' vision is to create hope and opportunities for our youth while following Wataynikaneyap Power's Guiding Principles." – Margaret Kenequanash, CEO, Wataynikaneyap Power Quick facts Since 2019, Canada Summer Jobs has supported employers by funding more than 460,000 job opportunities for youth, and in 2024, the program surpassed its 70,000 jobs target, with 71,200 jobs supported. Canada Summer Jobs is delivered through the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) and is part of a wide variety of programs offered by the Government of Canada to help youth gain the skills, education and work experience they need to successfully transition into the workforce. In Budget 2024, the Government committed to help youth in Canada through a $351.2 million investment to support 90,000 youth work experiences and employment support opportunities in 2025-26. These investments included: $200.5 million in 2025–26 for Canada Summer Jobs, to provide well-paying summer job opportunities, including in sectors facing critical labour shortages, such as housing construction; and $150.7 million in 2025–26 for the YESS Program, to provide job placements and employment supports to youth in a variety of sectors, such as STEM, housing and digital technology. Today's announcement of additional job opportunities is the result of an additional $25 million reallocation of funding from within ESDC in response to youth employment needs. An independent audit of Canada Summer Jobs by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada found that youth who participate in the program benefit from better long-term earnings than non-participants. In a survey of Canada Summer Jobs youth participants for 2024, 92% of respondents reported having gained confidence in multiple skills needed for future employment. Additionally, 85% of respondents indicated that they were optimistic about their future employment prospects. Review: Canadian brand Cozey launches modular sofa bed

Could the Cozey Neptune Sofa-Bed be filling a gap in the Canadian marketplace? It's definitely filling a small corner in my spare bedroom. I've found it particularly challenging to find a sofa bed that can fit in my spare bedroom, as it's a very small space. The Neptune is a modular sofa bed, so you can order a configuration that accommodates your needs. Cozey is known for its modular sofas (we've tried quite a few of the brand's products, from its original modular sofa called the Altus , to the plusher Ciello sofa and the new outdoor dining set ). The Montreal-based brand continues to expand to create pieces that can conform and complement spaces of different uses, sizes and styles. I was excited when Cozey launched the Neptune because I wanted my small room to be multipurpose, but couldn't find a sofa bed that would fit. I ended up getting a two-seater sofa with two ottomans so I can turn the love-seat-size sofa into a full bed. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. If you don't see it, please check your junk folder. The next issue of Sunrise will soon be in your inbox. Please try again Interested in more newsletters? Browse here. Overall, I'm thrilled that I found a sofa bed to fit my limited space and would recommend it for others looking to do the same. Read below for my full review. What: Neptune Sofa-Bed Collection Price: $2,205 for a two-seater with two ottomans ( optional sleep kit add-on , $390) Where to buy: Cozey The Neptune is unlike any other sofa bed I've tried. Traditionally, a sofa bed is a couch with a heavy, springy mattress folded beneath the seats. The Neptune is a completely different mechanism. The conversion of sofa-to-bed and vice versa may take longer than the traditional style, but it's not arduous and awkward to pull out and fit in. It's a smoother, lighter experience. The Neptune can be purchased in various configurations, so it can accommodate different-sized and shaped spaces. It has a medium firmness, both as a sofa and a bed. It's comfortable as a sofa and more comfortable than most traditional sofa beds, but it's ideal for a short-term sleeping solution. I've ordered many pieces from Cozey, and the delivery is always seamless; the Neptune was no exception. The Neptune comes in boxes, one per seat plus the arms (and one box per ottoman). Each piece is wrapped in a material to ensure it arrives in good shape. Assemble this sofa with two people — I usually assemble alone, but it's just so much easier with a second set of hands. You don't need any tools, just some twists, turns and slides. Twisting in the legs is as easy as it gets, sliding the backs and arms takes a few tries. It took me approximately an hour to assemble, from start to finish, complete with the unboxing. Check out Cozey's assembly video . It's a medium-to-firm sofa that has clean lines and good support. If you're looking for a cozy couch, consider adding fluffy pillows and throws to enhance the softness. I selected the sofa in 'leaf,' which is a muted green and made from Cozey's performance fabric. This upholstery is durable, easy to clean and stain-resistant. It strikes a good balance between comfort and durability, but it's not as soft as some of the brand's other fabrics, such as chenille or corduroy. In terms of a sofa bed, it's great. The bed is made from the sofa pillows laid out flat, and there's the option to add on the sleep kit — so no uncomfortable springs digging into your body. However, even with the sleep kit, you can feel a bit of the grooves between the pillows. It's more than adequate for a bonus bed to host visitors. As mentioned, the space for this sofa is small, so transforming it from couch to bed and vice versa requires light gymnastics. It's totally a space issue and not a sofa issue, it's simple to transform and even easier if you have a decent amount of room. Modularity: My problem is space. The Neptune's modularity solves that. I'm thrilled that I finally found a sofa bed that can work in a spare bedroom that's really a 'plus den.' When ordering the sofa, I debated whether to get one or two seats and ottomans. I ended up getting two of each, so I have the option to have a double bed versus a single bed. I'm not fully convinced that the double fits the space (sans gymnastics), so I may go down to a single and put the second seat and ottoman in a different room — which is no problem, because of the Neptune's modularity. Storage: My problem is space. The Neptune's storage compartments, located under the seat (a bit difficult to get your stuff in and out because of how the seat pulls forward) and the ottoman (this is 10/10 storage). I like that a sleep kit is available to specifically fit the Neptune and the size I selected. However, I don't need pillows and linens, I just want the mattress pad. I'd prefer if I could order the sleep kit a la carte. Now, I have too many extra pillows. I'll likely give them away as they are currently nestled in the precious storage areas of the ottomans. That being said, I do find it easy to unpack and pack the sleep kit into their bags. It's not like a sleeping bag experience, where it's a full-body workout to get the bag back into the stuff sack. The Neptune sofa bed is a good solution to my space problems. I recommend the Neptune to people who want to have a spare bed. It's simple to convert and useful as storage. If you don't need the full sleep kit (with the mattress pad, pillow and linens), you may want to order a separate sleeping pad from somewhere else , but ensure you measure your sofa bed configuration carefully and order the correct size.
