Apres-ski to hits the high seas: La Folie Douce heads to Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH, England - -Champagne sprays and DJ decks will trade mountain peaks for ocean spray this summer as apres-ski pioneers La Folie Douce bring their high-altitude hedonism to Britain's premier sailing spectacle.
SailGP, taking place in Portsmouth on July 19–20, will mark its return to British shores with a new waterfront lounge where the party atmosphere of the French Alps meets high-octane sailing just metres from shore, organisers said on Thursday.
'SailGP is thrilled to team up with world-class hospitality brands such as La Folie Douce and celebrated chef Ollie Dabbous,' said SailGP Chief Marketing Officer Leah Davis. 'It promises to be an unforgettable apres-sail experience that fans will not want to miss.'
Founded in Val d'Isere in 1974 by Luc Reversade, La Folie Douce has expanded to eight locations across prestigious French ski resorts including Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens, becoming the definitive high-altitude party destination combining gourmet dining with theatrical performances and DJ sets.
Some 20,000 spectators are expected at SailGP's first appearance on British shores in three years, where they will witness 12 national teams racing F50 catamarans at speeds exceeding 100 km/h. REUTERS

PARIS - Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva will hang on to the sweat-soaked wristband that Australia's Daria Kasatkina jokingly threw towards her at the net as a souvenir of their entertaining French Open clash on Monday. "When she threw her wristband at me, it was funny. It was a nice gesture from her. "After that, we exchanged kind words, and she told me congratulations. Of course, I said it was a good match. I kept the wristband so it's going to be in my bag for now." Andreeva joked in her on-court interview that she practised with Kasatkina only because she "hated" her and later said that a changed mindset helped her avenge a three-set defeat by the 28-year-old in the Ningbo final last year. "When I first played Dasha, it was much more difficult for me to stay focused and not to be nice on the court," she said. "Compared to the last match, today I knew that she's going to want to beat me on the court. I don't know what changed, but today was not that hard to change my mindset and step on court and be opponents. "I don't know how, but I managed to tell myself that I'm playing against the ball, not against the opponent. I just tried to focus on the ball that I have to hit, and I was able to keep this focus throughout the whole match so I'm proud of myself." Disney lays off hundreds in film, TV as industry woes linger
Disney has cut more than 8,000 jobs in recent years as it seeks to improve profitability. PHOTO: AFP Los Angeles - Walt Disney Co. is laying off several hundred employees across its film and TV businesses, cuts that underscore that the entertainment industry's contraction is far from over. The staff reductions began on June 2 and are falling on employees in marketing, publicity, casting and development, along with corporate financial operations, according to the company. Hollywood has been in a cost-cutting mode for several years, with production and employment in a downward spiral. Studios have reduced the number of films they release to boost profitability, particularly with cinema attendance still below pre-pandemic levels. Consumers, meanwhile, are cancelling cable-TV subscriptions in favour of streaming services, a shift that crimps advertising and distribution revenue for operators of traditional channels. The changes are prompting a massive reorganisation of the business. Comcast plans to spin off most of its cable-TV channels, including MSNBC, USA and CNBC, by the end of this year. Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. has also completed an internal restructuring to separate its studio business and its cable-TV operations, which could facilitate a divestment of the latter division. More cuts are expected at Paramount Global as it pursues a merger with independent film and TV studio Skydance Media. Disney had earlier weighed divesting its own TV networks including ABC, but ultimately decided to keep the assets. The company announced a retrenchment in February 2023, eliminating 7,000 jobs in a bid to cut expenses by US$5.5 billion (S$7.1 billion). Disney later increased that target to US$7.5 billion. Competitors have also laid off thousands of workers. The latest reductions follow roughly 200 job cuts across Disney's ABC and entertainment TV networks in March. In all, the company has eliminated more than 8,000 positions in recent years as it seeks to improve profitability. The latest layoffs were first reported by the entertainment industry publication Deadline. Disney had about 233,000 employees at the end of its last fiscal year in September, including 76 per cent full time.
