Quick Summary
Nintendo will release patches to 12 of its Switch games on the same day the Switch 2 hits stores.
They will add new features exclusive to the new console and will be free to download.
When Nintendo formally unveiled its new console, it also revealed plenty of existing Switch games that will be updated to make best use of it.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will see the launch of Switch 2 Edition versions of several games, with others set to follow. However, many were dismayed to learn that they will generally cost extra, even if you already own the original.
Some will be includes as part of a Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription, while others will require an additional fee. However, Nintendo has also just announced that 12 games will get Switch 2 upgrades for free – and they'll all be available from day one.
The games will receive patches with features only possible by playing on Switch 2, such as higher resolutions, better frame rates and/or HDR. There could also be GameChat inclusion (Nintendo's new in-game video chat functionality) and the ability to share games to a connected Switch over GameShare.
This latter feature allows for two gamers to play the same title, without both needing to buy it. The Switch 2 will host the game, while another player can join on a conventional Switch.
There are some big-hitters on Nintendo's free update list. You can see exactly what upgrades each will get on a dedicated web page. However, here's the lineup that'll get a downloadable patch from 5 June 2025 – the on-sale date for the Switch 2:
51 Worldwide Games
ARMS
Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Game Builder Garage
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Mario Odyssey
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Each of the games could get all of the aforementioned boosts or just a few of them. They will naturally need to be owned by the primary Switch 2 account holder.
It's also worth noting that wherever HDR support is added, that will only apply when running the game on a supported TV in docked mode.

Switch 2 Pre-Order Got Cancelled? You Could Get a Reward

With only days remaining until the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, major retailers have announced a wave of pre-order cancellations. However, that doesn't mean you're entirely out of luck—some buyers got credit applied to their accounts. The cancellations have affected buyers in both the US and the UK. Walmart, Target, Game, and plenty more retailers have had to cancel their customers' purchases. Walmart was one of the retailers that needed to cancel orders. When one Reddit user called the company to find out why their order had been canceled, they were told it was happening to many purchases. That same customer received a $25 credit as compensation. In other words, call the retailer and ask what they can do, ideally in a kind way—the customer service representatives already have to deal with a lot of upset people. A pre-order used to be a guarantee that you'll receive that console on the day of release. Retailers accept your money early to agree to the guarantee, and if you can argue such, you might get money. Remember that every retailer has their own rules for these agreements, and many may have wording that prevents it from being seen as a guarantee. Demand for the Switch 2 was extremely high, which likely surpassed expectations despite the difficulties many faced in securing pre-orders before the release. Game, a major UK retailer, first posted a public apology on social media, admitting that some Switch 2 pre-orders had been canceled and promising to restore as many affected orders as possible. While Game initially said they would reach out to affected customers with updates, they later removed their apology tweet. According to Eurogamer, the now-deleted post said, "We sincerely apologise for the recent cancellation of some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order. We're currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible. If your order was impacted, please know that we're doing everything we can and will be in touch with further updates and next steps. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this. We truly appreciate your support.' Since the tweet is gone, it is likely that purchases will not be reinstated. There's just not enough product for the amount of pre-orders that went through. You should keep an eye on your own purchases because more pre-orders will likely be canceled as time goes on. The chip shortage has been long over, but it seems like limited consoles will just be normal at release. Nintendo will likely open orders again when there is stock available to buy, but keep in mind that making these takes time and shipping them could take even longer. While it is tempting to buy from scalpers, we know that more are coming, so patience is likely the smarter move. Source: Eurogamer, Los1man on Reddit

What is a GPT?

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The introduction of generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) marked a significant milestone in the adoption and utility of artificial intelligence in the real world. The technology was created by the then fledgling research lab OpenAI, based on previous research done on transformers in 2017 by Google Labs. It was Google's white paper "Attention is all you need", which laid the foundation for OpenAI's work on the GPT concept. As seen in > Model matchup surprise > ChatGPT announcements > Goodbye ChatGPT-4 > Why ChatGPT 4.1 is a big deal Transformers provided AI scientists with an innovative method of taking user input, and converting it to something that could be used by the neural network using an attention mechanism to identify important parts of the data. This architecture also allows for the information to be processed in parallel rather than sequentially as with traditional neural networks. This provides a huge and critical improvement in speed and efficiency of AI processing. OpenAI's GPT architecture was released in 2018 with GPT-1. By significantly refining Google's transformer ideas, the GPT model demonstrated that large-scale unsupervised learning could produce an extremely capable text generation model which operated at vastly improved speeds. GPT's also uprated the neural networks' understanding of context which improved accuracy and provided human-like coherence. Before GPT, AI language models relied on rule-based systems or simpler neural networks like recurrent neural networks (RNNs), which struggled with long-range dependencies and contextual understanding. The story of the GPT architecture is one of constant incremental improvements ever year since launch. GPT-2 in 2019 introduced a model with 1.5 billion parameters, which started to provide the kind of fluent text responses where AI users are now familiar with. However it was the introduction of GPT-3 (and subsequently 3.5) in 2020 which was the real game-changer. It featured 175 billion parameters, and suddenly a single AI model could cope with a vast array of applications from creative writing to code generation. GPT technology went viral in November of 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT. Based on GPT 3.5 and later GPT-4, this astonishing technology instantly propelled AI into public consciousness in a massive way. Unlike previous GPT models, ChatGPT was fine-tuned for conversational interaction. Suddenly business users and ordinary citizens could use an AI for things like customer service, online tutoring or technical support. So powerful was this idea, that the product attracted a 100 million users in a mere 60 days. Today GPT is one of the top two AI system architectures in the world (along with Google's Gemini). Recent improvements have included multimodal capabilities, i.e. the ability to process not just text but also images, video and audio. OpenAI has also updated the platform to improve pattern recognition and enhance unsupervised learning, as well as adding agentic functionality via semi-autonomous tasks. On the commercial front, GPT powered applications are now deeply embedded in many different business and industry enterprises. Salesforce has Einstein GPT to deliver CRM functionality, Microsoft's Copilot is an AI assisted coding tool which incorporates Office suite automation, and there are multiple healthcare AI models which are fine-tuned to provide GPT powered diagnosis, patient interaction and medical research. At the time of writing the only two significant rivals to the GPT architecture are Google's Gemini system and the work being done by DeepSeek, Anthropic's Claude and Meta with its Llama models. The latter products also use transformers, but in a subtly different way to GPT. Google however is a dark horse in the race, as it's becoming clear that the Gemini platform has the potential to dominate the global AI arena within a few short years. Despite the competition, OpenAI remains firmly at the top of many leaderboards in terms of AI performance and benchmarks. Its growing range of reasoning models such as o1 and o3, and its superlative image generation product, GPT Image-1 which uses the technology, continue to demonstrate that there is significant life left in the architecture, waiting to be exploited.

New Footage Confirms Switch 2 Versions of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Run at 60fps

We've long known that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were on the list to receive a Switch 2 performance upgrade. Now, players have their first look at how these games play on the new console, via Nintendo Today, the Switch 2 news app. There's no way to embed the video in this article — Switch 2 footage is locked down on Nintendo Today — but the Wario64 Bluesky account shared a 33-second-long recording of the footage that you can view here. The showcase confirms that Scarlet and Violet will run at 4K at 60 frames per second on the Switch 2, at least while it's docked. This is a refreshing upgrade to the generation nine Pokemon games, which are among some of the best Pokemon games of all time but are hampered by a slew of performance issues. Nintendo included shots of key in-game locations, such as Pokemon Academy in Mesagoza and Casseroya Lake. With the original Switch hardware, the frame rate would frequently tank anywhere between 20 and 30fps when exploring these areas. The Switch 2 footage shows the game maintaining a smooth 60fps with no visual stutters no matter where the player is exploring. The art style for the game remains largely unchanged, with wild Pokemon plodding around mostly flat textures on the overworld. But when it comes to Scarlet and Violet's performance issues, the Switch 2 seems to be making a big leap in the right direction. The Switch 2 officially launches on Thursday, so you won't have to wait very long to explore a more optimized version of the Paldea region. If an upgraded version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can't satisfy your pocket-monster collecting urges, Pokemon Legends: Z-A launches for the Switch and the Switch 2 on Oct. 16.
