Poll Panel Writes To Rahul Gandhi On 'Match-Fixing', Gets No Reply: Sources
New Delhi:
Rahul Gandhi has not yet replied to an Election Commission letter inviting him to discuss allegations that the 2024 Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly elections were rigged, sources told NDTV Tuesday.
The poll panel - which has repeatedly and firmly denied the Congress and Mr Gandhi's claims that voter lists were manipulated and unverified individuals allowed to vote - sent the letter June 12. It was marked as 'received' at his residence in Delhi and also sent to his e-mail address, sources said.
Among his many accusations, Mr Gandhi had expressed concerns over the rigging of the 2024 Maharashtra and Haryana state elections; in the former he pointed out the BJP won 47 of 50 seats in which there was an "unprecedented increase" in voters - by eight per cent in just five months.
The EC denied all such claims, labelling the allegations "factually incorrect and misleading".
In fact, earlier this month the panel re-released a document issued in April to counter Rahul Gandhi's claims, and fears of a repeat in the Bihar election later this year.
The Congress and Mr Gandhi had also demanded video and photographs from polling booths, arguing the poll panel's revised guidelines - reducing retention period of CCTV footage to 45 days - was meant to hide potential electoral malpractice at polling booths.
On X Mr Gandhi also asked more questions of the EC and claimed it was, in fact, deleting evidence.
However, the Election Commission last week said that while the request to retain visuals of voting for more than 45 days seemed reasonable, it would impact voters' privacy and security.

"Voter list? Will not provide machine-readable format; CCTV footage? It was hidden by changing the law; Photo-video of the election? Not in one year, we will destroy it in 45 days. The one from whom answers are needed is destroying the evidence. It is clear the match is fixed. And a fixed election is poison for democracy," the Congress MP wrote in Hindi.
Sources in the Commission, however, told NDTV, "What is veiled as a very logical demand is contrary to the privacy and security concerns of the voters... a legal position laid down in the Representation of the People Act 1950/1951 and the directions of the Supreme Court".
"Sharing of the footage, which would enable easy identification of the electors by any group or an individual, would leave both the elector who has voted and those who haven't vulnerable to pressure, discrimination and intimidation by anti-social elements," the panel pointed out.
The sources said retaining CCTV footage is not mandatory but is done by the Election Commission for 45 days since it is in line with timeframe for fiing of legal challenges.

Retirement Trust Fund Depletion: Social Security benefits may shrink by 2033. Here's why, how it may affect you, what can be done to avert crisis and how to prepare for future
A recent government report has raised concerns about the future of Social Security. The Social Security Board of Trustees now says the retirement trust fund could be depleted by 2033. This is one year earlier than its last estimate. Millions of Americans who rely on these benefits may see reduced payments if no action is taken, media reports said. Trust Fund Depletion Expected in 2033 The Social Security Board of Trustees released its 2024 annual report. It shows that the retirement trust fund may run out by 2033. This change was shared with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The new timeline increases concerns for future retirees. If Congress does not take steps soon, benefits could be reduced. A 23% cut may occur. This would affect many Americans who depend on the system. Also Read: Baba Vanga World War 3 Prophecy: Did Bulgarian mystic predict war between Iran and Israel? Here's how she said it would end How It May Affect You? The Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund is at risk. This fund gives monthly checks to retired workers and their families. If the fund runs dry, payroll taxes will only cover about 77% of scheduled payments. This would mean smaller checks for millions of retirees. Live Events Many people use these payments as their only income. A cut in benefits could create serious challenges for these households. Why is it Happening? Several issues have caused the trust fund to weaken faster. One factor is the Social Security Fairness Act. This law helped nearly 3 million retired public workers by improving their benefits. However, it also added pressure to the trust fund. Demographic changes are also a factor. More people are retiring as baby boomers age. People are living longer and having fewer children. This means fewer workers are paying into the system while more people collect benefits for longer. Also Read: Never Before Ever: US President lashes out at Israel for violating ceasefire with Iran. See how did Trump criticize Netanyahu What Can be Done to Avert Crisis? Lawmakers have suggested different ways to strengthen the fund. One idea is to raise the Full Retirement Age . It is now 67, but some propose increasing it to 70. Early retirement age could also move from 62 to 65. Another idea is to raise the cap on income subject to Social Security taxes. At present, only income up to $176,000 is taxed. Increasing this limit could mean higher contributions from high earners. How to Prepare for Future? Financial experts believe millennials and Gen Z may not receive full benefits. Some may receive only partial benefits or none at all. These groups are advised to start preparing now. Retirement planning experts recommend early saving. Starting a Roth IRA or increasing contributions to a 401(k) are good options. These actions help build personal savings to rely on later in life. FAQs What happens if the Social Security trust fund runs out in 2033? If the fund runs out, only 77% of scheduled benefits will be paid. Retirees may face a 23% cut unless Congress takes action to fix the issue. How can younger people prepare for reduced Social Security benefits? Younger workers should save more through Roth IRAs or 401(k)s. Financial planners suggest preparing for retirement without depending on full Social Security payments.

India cannot develop with single ideology or leader; Emergency was bid to end multi-party democracy: Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) that a country cannot develop if it is made to follow a single ideology or a single leader and leaves no scope for diverse opinions and ideas. He added that the foundations of democracy are so deep in India that if any dictator tries to shake it, he will do nothing but ruin his future. Speaking at an event marking 50 years after the Emergency, Mr. Shah said that was the name of the 'conspiracy' to convert a multi-party democracy into a 'dictatorship by one person', which was strongly opposed by many people at that time, even at the cost of personal loss. It was not a result of circumstances and compulsion but a product of dictatorial mentality and hunger for power, he said. The Constitution has strengthened democracy and India is a land of people that has respected diversity for thousands of years, the Home Minister said at the event, organised by the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Trust. It is not only courts and Parliament that are responsible for protecting the spirit of the Constitution, he said, emphasising that the responsibility lies with the people too. 'Terrible consequences' 'Democracy was born first in India. No dictator can dismantle democracy, which is at the core of this country,' Mr. Shah said, recalling that 1.11 lakh people were arrested during the Emergency period imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975. Also read: Congress should apologise for imposing Emergency in 1975, says former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Noting that the Emergency was only supported by a coterie who benefited from the move, Mr. Shah said: 'It is the sycophants who, with their sycophancy, end the run of dictators.' The Union government has decided to commemorate 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' so that the country can remember the terrible consequences that ensue when a government becomes dictatorial, the Home Minister said. 'Killed the Constitution' Though the Emerency was imposed citing the security of the nation, its main purpose was to ensure the protection of power, he said. 'A number of incidents and protests and movements against unemployment, price-rise had shaken the chairs and foundations of the government elected by a majority. There was neither any external nor any internal threat to the security of the country. They had just won the Bangladesh war,' Mr. Shah said. Pointing to the current Opposition, Mr. Shah noted that parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Samajwadi Party who were affected by the Emergency are now sitting with the same Congress party which killed the Constitution. 'She (Indira Gandhi) made so many changes to the Constitution; even the Preamble was changed and the basic structure of the Constitution was changed. The judiciary was pliant. Agencies were misused,' he said. The Constitution, which was drafted through discussions, sacrifices and penance, was rejected in a minute by the order of the 'kitchen cabinet', he said. 'Longest night' 'The night of June 24, 1975 was the longest night in the history of independent India because its morning came after 21 months, and it was also the shortest night, because that night, the exercise of two years, 11 months, and 18 days was cancelled in a moment,' the Minister said. No sensible citizen who lived during the Emergency would have liked it, Mr. Shah said. Those who were under the illusion that no one could challenge them were defeated in the elections held after the Emergency was lifted, and a non-Congress government was formed for the first time since Independence, he said.

Congress questions govt over Asean issue and US travel advisory
New Delhi: Targeting Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal once again for terming the Asean nations as "B-team of China", Congress on Tuesday said the Asean co-chair for India FTA review ticking off Goyal for his remarks was yet another blow to Indian diplomacy . Referring to the ET report about the Asean co-chair for India FTA review ticking off Goyal, Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh said: "India has very close civilizational, cultural, economic and political ties with the 10-nation Asean Group. Asean, that came into being almost six decades ago, has a combined GDP just slightly lower than that of India. The Union commerce and industry minister dismisses them as the B-team of China. Asean now ticks him off. Indian diplomacy suffers yet another blow. This was needless." Meanwhile, some Congress leaders are also sensing a rift between the external affairs ministry and the commerce ministry over Goyal's remarks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: 1 simple trick to get all TV channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Congress also took exception to the US government's recent travel advisory on India, cautioning American citizens, especially women, against travelling to India alone, and the party said it was ironic that it came when the US President was rolling out a "red carpet" to the Pakistan Army chief. Asking why the Modi government was keeping mum on US travel advisory , Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said: "These are very damning advisory and yet the Modi government is absolutely quiet... We demand that the Indian government, at the highest level, should register its protest. On one hand, you (USA) are issuing advisories against India, but zilch on Pakistan. Pakistan, which is a terror state, is going absolutely scot-free. We are being hyphenated."
