If you ask ‘Crazy' Mohan to write dialogues for one film, he will write for four: K.S. Ravikumar
Actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday launched 25 books compiling the works, including plays and short stories, of actor and playwright 'Crazy' Mohan.
Speaking on the occasion, he said he was happy that they found each other. 'Ours is a story of two brothers born in each other's homes. We would speak every day. If someone were to listen in on our conversations, they would think we ought to have been in an asylum. He did not mind my atheism; he accepted it,' he said.
Director K.S. Ravikumar said there were times when Mohan would keep thinking and wait for even 15 days to develop a character, but dialogues came to him quickly. 'If you ask him to write dialogues for one film, he will write for four,' he added.
Actor Jayaram said though he had acted in over 300 films in the last 37 years, people of all languages recall Thenali and Panchathantiram, the movies where he co-starred with Mr. Haasan, which were directed by Mr. Ravikumar and scripted by Mohan. Publisher Alliance Srinivasan said that he had been trying to get Mohan's plays published since 1991.
'If Crazy Troupe has been able to sustain themselves since the 1980s, it is because of their clean comedy,' he added.
Brought out by The Alliance Publishers to mark their 125th anniversary, the books will have story and dialogues of plays, including Return of Crazy Thieves, Allaudin and 100 Watts Bulb, Madhil Mel Maadhu, and Chocolate Krishna; and two plays written by Mohan for theatre personality Kathadi Ramamurthi. His replies to questions from readers in the popular Tamil magazine Kalki and short stories that appeared in magazines are also included in the books.
Actor Maadhu Balaji said the books had neat humour, and 25 sketches made by artist Keshav. 'The play Chocolate Krishna will be released as a graphic novel. We are taking the books to all schools and colleges and also giving away two sets of each book to two senior citizen homes and padasalas.'

Kamal Haasan files nomination for Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu
Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president and actor Kamal Haasan on Friday filed his nomination papers to contest the biennial Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 19 from Tamil submitted the papers at the State Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and senior leaders from his party. He signed and handed over the nomination documents to election officials, marking his formal entry into the upcoming upper house move follows a brief delay in the nomination process. Haasan had initially been expected to file his papers earlier but deferred it, reportedly on the advice of party insiders who suggested the timing may not be ideal due to the backlash he faced for a controversial comment on the origins of Kannada. At a recent promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai, Haasan had remarked that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil', prompting widespread criticism from pro-Kannada groups. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce subsequently halted the release and screening of the film in the state, following protests and calls for a boycott. Haasan refused to apologise, maintaining that his comment had been taken out of context. He later told the Karnataka High Court that he would not release the film in the state, though he continued to defend his Rajya Sabha nomination comes under an electoral pact with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which had promised him a seat in the upper house in exchange for his party's support to the DMK-led alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The DMK formally announced Haasan as one of its three Rajya Sabha candidates on May for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu are set to be held on June 19. IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

Thug Life Day 2 Box Office Trends: Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's movie DROPS by over 55 percent; To gross just Rs 7 crore on 1st Friday
Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life grossed a poor Rs 17 crore on the opening day in India. The film was expected to gross atleast Rs 20 crore on day 1 but the negative word of mouth spread like wildfire, as a result of which it could manage only Rs 17 crore. Now, the film has dropped by over 55 percent on day 2 and this more or less seals the film a sorry fate. Based on early trends, Thug Life has grossed Rs 7 crore on day 2, taking the two day India cume to Rs 24 crore. The long weekend total shall be under Rs 40 crore and then the weekdays should not be adding much. It was thought that a poor theatrical performance for a Kamal Haasan film like Indian 2 would not be replicated again but it has happened and by the actor-director combination that delivered a cult-classic like Nayakan. With the way Thug Life is trending, it will be no surprise if it ends with a global cume of under Rs 100 crore. Indian 2 had grossed Rs 150 crore and was termed a collosal disaster and Thug Life has shall manage to go a step further. The only difference is that Indian 2 lost money to producers while Thug Life won't because of excellent non-theatrical deals signed just after the blockbuster success of Vikram. The only loss will be that Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam won't be making as much as they should be, from the project. Thug Life got praise for its cinematography and staging but was criticised for its generic story and dragged screenplay. It is said to be a clear case of style over substance and the results are for everyone to see. The actor-director combo will look to introspect and make radical changes to the way they approach films. Kamal Haasan's next movie shall be Indian 3, which has already been shot. It is to be seen what he works on, after that. As for Mani Ratnam, it is still not clear as to what he will work on next. You can watch Thug Life at a theatre near you, now. If you have watched the movie, do share what you felt about it.
