Reopened Sunderland University cinema to hold public screening
A university cinema which was badly damaged in a storm will host a public screening for the first time since it was refurbished. The venue, on the University of Sunderland's St Peter's Campus, will show a range of films to celebrate independent cinema and North East filmmakers.Head of the School of Media and Creative Industries, Lee Hall, said the programme was a chance to "demystify independent cinema".The screenings, which start on Monday with Ridley Scott's war epic The Duellists, are free.
The cinema was damaged beyond use during Storm Arwen in 2021 but it relaunched in November after a £1.3m renovation."Our new screening programme is an opportunity to demystify independent cinema and introduce audiences to brilliant films that may not be on their watchlist – as well as some more familiar titles," Mr Hall said. "We hope people come along and discover our wonderful cinema and fantastic films."The public screenings are supported by funding from Film Hub North.Partnership manager Huttson Lo said the body was "delighted" to highlight "north-east filmmaking, past, present and future".

When does Alien: Earth drop? Everything we know about the new sci-fi series
Something gross is coming to our screens. Landing on 13 August, the first two episodes of the upcoming sci-fi horror series Alien:Earth will be available to stream on Disney+. A prequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien, there will be eight episodes landing in total, with the first two premiering on the release date, and new episodes dropping every Wednesday. The first TV series of the Alien franchise, Alien:Earth is set in the year 2120. Wendy, played by Don't Worry Darling's Sydney Chandler, breaks new ground as the first humanoid robot with human consciousness. But when an extraterrestrial vessel crashes into Earth, Wendy and a team of soldiers go looking for signs of life and find something terrible within. No prizes for guessing what that is. While we have a couple of months before the series lands, the official trailer teases some of the plot points. The most chilling quote in the trailer is that 'The ship collected five different life forms from the darkest corners of the universe.' It's terrifying to think, but it seems the team will have to tackle more than just the xenomorph we know from the Alien franchise. On the creative and production team is Noah Hawley (the screen writer behind major series including Fargo and Legion), Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Joseph Iberti, Dana Gonzales and Clayton Krueger, while cast members include Alex Lawther from The End of the F***ing World and Black Mirror, Kit Young from The Beautiful Game, Timothy Olyphant from Fargo and The Mandalorian), The Babadook's Essie Davis, and Adarsh Gourav from White Tigers. Where can I watch Alien: Earth in the UK? While the series will premiere on August 12 on FX and Hulu in the US, it will launch in the UK and Ireland on 13 August on Disney+. I visited the location of the original Gladiator movie - here's why this Moroccan city is the new Hollywood
Gazing across the parched earth to the village of Ait Ben-Haddou, it was easy to imagine hearing the clash of swords of days long past. Ait Ben-Haddou sits at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco. Many travellers make the four hour drive here from Marrakesh but I'd flown direct from Stansted to the nearby city of Ouarzazate, just a 30-minute drive away. This was my first stop on a week long trip across the South of Morocco and back again, following the traditional caravan route to the Sahara. Just on the outskirts of Ait Ben-Haddou, our hotel Riad Caravane offered a unique blend of Moroccan architecture and modern comfort with exceptional food and service. Ait Ben-Haddou, now a Unesco World Heritage Site, once made its money by trading salt. But these days Ait Ben-Haddou and nearby Ouarzazate are famed for something quite different. Known locally as Ouarzawood in homage to its movie credentials, this region has provided the backdrop for many blockbuster films and TV series, including Ridley Scott's Gladiator and it's sequel Gladiator 2 out on November 15th. Ait Ben-Haddou was the scene of his first fight. An arena was constructed for the film using traditional mud bricks so it blended in with the existing architecture. It's not just Gladiator that was filmed here. Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and The Mummy also feature its earthen buildings and streets. The August sun was fierce as I entered the village, yet it was easy to find shade behind its high walls. An intricate warren of alleyways house a number of shops selling many of the same wares you'd expect in the souks of Marrakesh. These sit side-by-side with traditional homes and stalls housing animals. Like many of the locals, my village guide Mohammed also works as an extra when the movie crews arrive. On a quick tour of his house, he proudly showed off the sword and shield he brandished in Game of Thrones. Thirty minutes drive from Ait Ben-Haddou, on the outskirts of Ouarzazate, lies the Atlas film studios, one of the biggest in the world, opened in 1983. The great and good of Hollywood have filmed here including Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo Di Caprio and, most recently, the cast of Gladiator 2. Leaving the movie world behind, I headed out of the city to Fint Oasis. Even in the height of the summer drought, this tranquil, lush place had large pools of water in its tree-lined riverbed. Local women washed their clothes, drying them here and there on the bushes. I was thrilled to spot turtles and frogs in the water. Over the next few days, our trip took me gradually eastwards, inching ever closer to the Sahara. There were some memorable stops on the way. The Dades region, know as the Valley of the Roses, is dotted with pink-coloured villages. The scent of the roses that are grown here hangs in the air. Women from this area, many working together in co-operatives, pick 700 tonnes of rose petals each year which are made into rosewater, used in beauty products, cooking and aromatherapy. Continuing on, we reached the impressive Todra Gorge, a series of limestone river canyons with sheer cliffs rising up to 300 metres. That evening, I arrived in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, just before sunset. Our stunning hotel - Riad Serai - was quite literally, on the edge of a part of the desert called Erg Chebbi. This large sea of dunes formed by wind-blown sand stretched as far as I could see. I walked a little way and sat down. All I could hear was the sound of the wind which had just started to pick up. In the distance, I could make out the silhouette of camels bearing riders across the peaks of the dunes. The next day, a 4x4 took me deeper into the desert. I was staying the night in a Luxury Desert Camp. The driver navigated his way across the deep orange sand as if he was following some unseen highway. We stopped to look for fossils. The heat was searing as we walked, eyes down scanning the rocky sand. Within minutes I'd found an ammonite. Just seconds later, there were more. Arriving at the camp, I was greeted with traditional Moroccan mint tea.. The tents were something else - with air conditioning, a stand-alone bath and a very comfy bed, this was glamping at its finest. But the best was yet to come. As the sun began to dip, I climbed awkwardly onto a camel and was led out to the dunes to watch the sunset. In those few minutes as the light faded, the sand seemed to shift in colour from orange, to pink and then red. Back at camp, all the guests sat around the fire pit chatting and listening to traditional live music. When all was quiet, I lay on my back staring at the crystal-clear night sky. I'd been told the chance of seeing a meteor that night was high. Minutes later, a shooting star traced a path directly above. A fitting end to a truly star-studded trip.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off star Mia Sara, 57, who worked with Tom Cruise in a unicorn movie, is seen in rare snaps
Mia Sara was a huge movie star in the 1980s. The exotic-looking actress made her big-screen debut opposite Tom Cruise in the fantasy unicorn-seeking adventure Legend in 1985. Then one year later - at the age of 18 - this siren landed a major role in an iconic high school comedy, 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off, starring Matthew Broderick. The 57-year-old Hollywood stalwart has continued to work but has rarely been seen in public. But on Monday evening, the formerly dark-haired star hit her first red carpet in many years for the premiere of her new movie, based on a 2020 Stephen King novel of the same name, The Life of Chuck. She attended the premiere screening at Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles with Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill, who is also starring in the movie. Born Mia Sarapochiello in Brooklyn, New York, she was just 16 when she landed her big break as a princess to Cruise's man from the woods on Legend. The movie was anchored by Hollywood heavyweights - not just Cruise, but also superstar director Ridley Scott - yet still turned out to be a box office flop. But just one year later, Mia became a star across America when she starred as Sloane Peterson, the girlfriend of mischievous high school senior, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick). Ferris gets his famous day off by pretending to be sick, and manages to get Sloane to join him by feeding the school the fake story that her grandmother has died. Upon its release, Ferris Bueller's Day Off became a thunderous box office success, earning $70 million with just a $5 million budget, and remains one of the best-loved high school comedies to ever made. Shortly after the movie came out, Mia showered praise on both Cruise and Matthew Broderick, whom she noted 'had much more experience' than she did. 'Tom was dedicated and I learned a lot of good work habits from him. And I respected Matt because I had seen him on Broadway. He was one of my favorites,' she told UPI. In the 1990s she featured in such movies as the Melanie Griffith drama A Stranger Among Us - directed by Sidney Lumet of 12 Angry Men fame - as well as the smash hit Jean-Claude Van Damme action movie Timecop. She continued acting on TV Programs like CSI: NY and movies like Dorothy & The Witches of Oz until 2013, when she took a hiatus that ultimately lasted longer than a decade. As early as 2010, she had remarked that she was 'mostly retired' as she had become a 'mother with a really noisy, difficult house to maintain!' The New York native also noted: 'I'm a poet, so for the last couple of years that's what I've been focusing on,' in an interview with Total Film. Mia now has a daughter named Amelia, 20, by her second and current husband Brian Henson, who is the son of The Muppets creator Jim Henson. She also has a 28-year-old son called Dashiell by her first husband Jason Connery, whose father was none other than James Bond legend Sean Connery. After many years away from the movies, she is back with The Life Of Chuck. Mia features amid a star-studded cast including Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Hamill, Jacob Tremblay, Karen Gillan and Nick Offerman. The movie earned a warm response from the critics when it premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will be out in theaters soon.
