Welsh music icon Mike Peters MBE, the frontman of popular rock band The Alarm, has died today, April 25, aged 66 following a 30-year-long battle with cancer, his band has confirmed.
The band was formed in 1981 in Rhyl, Denbighshire, and had a top 20 hit, Sixty Eight Guns, just two years later.
Peters lived with blood cancer for 30 years, following his diagnosis of lymphoma in 1995, and later having chronic lymphocytic leukaemia twice.
The rock star was forced to cancel a US tour last year after being diagnosed with fast-growing lymphoma, which he had been undergoing treatment for at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. He was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his services to cancer care.
He was born in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, and lived in Dyserth with his wife of 39 years, Jules, who had fought her own cancer battle - and their sons Dylan, 20 and Evan, 18.
Alongside his wife, he co-founded Love Hope Strength, a cancer charity to encourage action around stem cell donation.

Peters - who had worked in the computer department for Kwik Save supermarket - had started a band The Toilets in Rhyl in 1977, after seeing the Sex Pistols play in Chester.
After various changes of line-up, notably the introduction of guitarist Dave Sharp, and changes of name, The Alarm played their first gig in Prestatyn in 1981.
They would go on to sell an estimated five million records and also become the first Welsh musicians since Tom Jones and Bonnie Tyler to break into America.
At age 36, Mike Peters was first diagnosed with the blood cancer chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). He underwent numerous drug treatments and rounds of chemotherapy, and had tried experimental therapy to keep his cancer at bay.
In 2024, just days before he was supposed to tour America, he noticed a new lump in his neck which doctors soon diagnosed as Richter's syndrome, where CLL changes into a much more aggressive lymphoma.
After his diagnosis, during an interview with the PA news agency, Peters credited his thousands of fans with giving him a boost, saying his diagnosis was met with 'phenomenal support and prayers from the fans from all directions'.

"Live right up to the last breath and stay positive about the world, your family and the environment you live in."

Introspective exhibition by Meinir Mathias in Tenby
Titled "O dan yr wyneb" (Beneath the Surface), the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Ms Mathias' private studio and sketchbooks, showcasing unpublished works. The exhibit stands alongside the museum's historic collection of works by Gwen and Augustus John, pioneering Welsh artists known for chronicling the lives of musicians, travellers, and bohemian communities in the last century. While Ms Mathias is known for her oil paintings that reimagine Wales's cultural past, this exhibition shifts focus to her present. It features etchings, delicate drawings, and candid paintings, capturing fleeting moments and portraits of her contemporaries, including family, friends, fellow artists, and travellers. These pieces offer insight into the quiet poetry of everyday life that fuels her artistic vision. Ms Mathias has close connections to Pembrokeshire's landscapes, and stories, with family ties and childhood connections to the Preseli Hills. She chose Tenby for this exhibition due to her fond memories of family trips and Sunday school outings to the area. The coastal gallery's rugged setting complements the raw intimacy of her sketches and etchings. Although stylistically distinct from her usual historical scenes, these pieces share her attention to detail, love of storytelling, and commitment to capturing the essence of Wales. By sharing space with Gwen and Augustus John, Ms Mathias pays homage to their legacy of documenting creative communities while offering her own contemporary tribute to artistic kinship. The exhibition, "O dan yr wyneb," is an invitation to explore the quiet corridors of an artist's mind. It launches on Saturday, July 5, from 2pm to 4pm.

Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly reportedly named in King's Birthday Honours
The two TV presenters, who have fronted the series together since 2014, will be recognised in this year's list which will be revealed on Friday, The Daily Mail said. Queen Camilla, who attends Silver Swans – classes for elderly ballet dancers run by the Royal Academy of Dance – is known to tune in to BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and has described herself as one of Strictly's 'greatest fans'. Claudia Winkleman, Tess Daly, during an appearance on the live show Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1 (Guy Levy/BBC/PA) Winkleman, 53, is also behind the gameshow, The Traitors, for which she took home the 2023 award for Entertainment Performance at the Baftas. The London-born broadcaster formerly presented on BBC Radio Two until 2024, helming different slots and programmes on the station including the comedy quiz series Hot Gossip, the Claudia Winkleman Arts Show and Claudia On Sunday. Her co-host, Daly, 56, presented the series since it first launched in 2004 alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth until he stepped down from the role in 2014. During that time the model took part in the 2008 Strictly Children In Need special where she won the title with professional dancer Anton Du Beke. The recognition comes amid a turbulent year for the Strictly team with reports alleging inappropriate behaviour from contestants and professional dancers. This comes after Welsh opera singer and BBC Radio Wales presenter, Wynne Evans, said he had been dropped by the BBC, following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. In 2024, the BBC launched a review into professional dancer Giovanni Pernice after accusations from contestant Amanda Abbington of 'inappropriate, mean, nasty bullying' behaviour during her time on the 2023 series. Italian dancer Pernice, who 'rejected any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour', and welcomed the conclusion of a BBC review which upheld 'some, but not all' of the complaints made by the actress against him.
