Taylor Swift vs. Dallas Cowboys Fuels 'America's Team' Debate

Taylor Swift vs. Dallas Cowboys Fuels 'America's Team' Debate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Make no mistake, it's good to have Taylor Swift on your side. And the Kansas City Chiefs have - in so many delightful ways - "weaponized'' her fandom, the result of her romantic relationship with tight end Travis Kelce. Advertisement Nevertheless ... No matter what the internet might claim, "America's Team'' is still the Dallas Cowboys. The Kansas City Chiefs are most everything a franchise should aspire to be. They win at the highest level. They've built something special with Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid and, of course, the future Hall of Famer Kelce. And in the last couple of years, they have benefited from the added attention that came with Swift's involvement. The dating life ... the presence at games ... it's all a marketing dream for that team and for the NFL. But "America's Team'' is not a transferable title. It doesn't shift from city to city depending on who wins the Super Bowl. (By the way, if it did, "America's Team'' would be the Philadelphia Eagles ... and nobody wants that.) Advertisement What shifts from city to city is called the "Lombardi Trophy.'' Dallas became "America's Team'' because of success and visibility and marketing, with NFL Films in the late-70's having recognized this and then coining the phrase. Coach Tom Landry hated it. It put a bullseye on his Cowboys. The bullseye remains. And so does the nickname. No matter what. The Cowboys went 7–10 last year and still averaged more viewers per game than almost anyone else in football. Still packed prime-time slots. Still sold merchandise. Still owned headlines. And they did it without a global pop star helping to boost the signal. Advertisement The Thanksgiving Day matchup last year featuring the Cowboys and Giants? 38.8 million viewers, peaking at 41.3 million — the most-watched NFL game of the entire regular season. And that will happen again this year. It's why the NFL's Game 1 is Dallas vs. Philly. It's why this season's Thanksgiving game - KC at Dallas - will likely set new records. It's about branding. And Jerry Jones has no intention of ever letting that slip away. If Taylor Swift shows up at this year's Chiefs-at-Cowboys Thanksgiving game, which will allow both franchises to bask in her glow? The "America's Team'' debate will rage again. But the facts won't change. ... in part because the Cowboys aren't just "America's Team.'' They're America's favorite team to hate. Advertisement Which is, in a way, another form of love. Non-transferable. WWE's 'The Miz' wants Browns to follow the Chiefs' rookie plan for Patrick Mahomes

WWE's 'The Miz' wants Browns to follow the Chiefs' rookie plan for Patrick Mahomes This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin about his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 9-13 at Edgewood Tahoe, and his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns, whom he hopes will take a tip from the Kansas City Chiefs. "When I first saw what we (Cleveland Browns) did with the second pick, I wanted Travis Hunter; I think he's a generational talent. He's going to play offense-defense. The best football player in the draft is what you're hearing. And then when I saw what we got for that second pick, I was like, wow, we just got a haul. So right then and there. I said, You know what? These guys know exactly what they're doing," said Miz, "Now, do we have a huge quarterback room? Yes. But do we need a huge quarterback room? Yes, because we can never find a good quarterback who is our franchise player. So I think now is when we're going to have a little competition, like to be, you know, to go up against each other. And I'm excited to see what Shedeur (Sanders), Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, and Joe Flacco can do in that quarterback room. Hopefully, the young kids can learn from Flacco because he is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, and I'm hoping that, you know, one of their college careers translates to the NFL." Miz mentioned Shedeur Sanders as his choice for the future franchise quarterback role. However, he wants Kansas City to utilize the process during Patrick Mahomes' rookie season. "I can sit here and say any name, and you never know until you get to the first game in the NFL and all the defensive packages are put into place, and you see how well they're able to look at the field and see the field and see where they need to go. So that's what I'm looking forward to. I look forward to seeing them get on the field and do something during a real NFL game. I'm not talking preseason, either. We can talk about the draft, rookie OTAs, regular OTAs, and the preseason. It all comes to fruition when the NFL season comes, and that's what I'm looking forward to," said Miz, "Hopefully, they'll be able to sit back and watch for a little while before they get in. I always think of what they did with Patrick Mahomes; Kansas City was the perfect situation for him. He got to sit a year learning from Alex Smith, and now he's one of the best quarterbacks ever to do it. So, hopefully, we'll be able to do the same thing." The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC, along with a first-place prize of $150,000, makes the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.
