City Councilman fears higher education desert with closure of Penn State Dubois

Yahoo23-05-2025

DUBOIS, Pa. (WTAJ) — Dubois city officials and residents are reacting after the Thursday afternoon vote announcing that Penn State will be closing seven of its branch campuses, including Penn State Dubois.
It was a dreary day on campus Thursday due to the rain and the announcement. Dubois City Councilman Elliot Gelfand has been outspoken since the list of campuses that were recommended to close was leaked.
'It happened a lot quicker than I thought it was going to,' Gelfand said.
Gelfand said that everyone he has spoken with in the community and some council members are very upset with the decision.
'People in rural PA are getting tired of not getting the same attention from the state and from institutions that places with larger populations get,' Gelfand said.
'No point in waiting,' PSU trustees vote to close DuBois, 6 other campuses
Gelfand said that he worries that the closure could impact the city's economy significantly, due to fewer people visiting who otherwise wouldn't have.
'We'll also lose a lot of training specific to the industries that are in the area,' Gelfand said. 'Penn State Dubois has created programs to support the powdered metal industry that is a very large employer in this area, to help build up that workforce as we've lost population over time.'
College students aren't the only ones who will feel the effects. With the college being walking distance from the Dubois Area High School, several students take advantage by gaining early college credit through dual enrollment.
'There's math and calculus that some people take over here and there's English that some of my friends take over here as well,' said high school junior Adalyn Whitherite.
Whitherite was on campus Thursday, returning books to the library that she had been using for a research project. She said it's sad to think that others in the future won't have that opportunity.
'Some of my classmates' parents work here as professors and stuff, so we were talking about like what would happen after they decided to close it down and what that would mean for their families, that would definitely make an impact,' Whitherite said.
Since Lock Haven University announced that it will be closing its local campus as well last year, commutable higher education for the area may soon become a thing of the past.
'Losing the campus is going to create kind of a higher education desert, we are an hour from State College, but not everyone can go to State College,' Gelfand said.

Huge consequences for the World Cup: why Germany must beat Portugal

An incomprehensible, unnecessary competition without relevance that no top team takes seriously? Not at all! Tomorrow evening, the German national team will compete in the Final Four of the Nations League for a spot in the final against Portugal – and for even more. The outcome of this match will determine whether the German team will face an easy group at the 2026 World Cup – or one filled with top contenders! If they lose to Portugal, Germany, currently ranked only tenth in the FIFA world rankings, risks being placed in pot two during the draw. This could mean a tough group with opponents like Argentina, Spain, France, or England already in the preliminary round. Advertisement Besides the three hosts, only the top nine in the world rankings will be placed in the first pot. The German team is currently one point behind Italy but could overtake them with a win against Portugal. However, a loss in the Nations League final could also mean losing points, while Italy could still gather a few points themselves. You can see for yourself: the FIFA rankings are not that easy to understand – but one thing is clear: every goal and every victory already counts for the 2026 World Cup and could ensure that the names in the group stage next year sound much more relaxed – and perhaps it won't mean going directly to Mexico's hot climate. Because that could also be possible if Germany lands in pot two. What do you think? Can Germany crack Portugal – and maybe even win the Nations League? Inmate accused of forging Trump assassination letter to get witness against him deported

A Wisconsin man is facing charges accusing him of forging a letter threatening President Donald Trump's life in an effort to get another man who was a potential witness against him in a criminal case deported. Prosecutors said in a criminal complaint filed Monday that Demetric D. Scott was behind a letter sent to state and federal officials with the return address and name of Ramón Morales Reyes. Scott was charged Monday with felony witness intimidation, identity theft and two counts of bail jumping. His attorney, Robert Hampton III, didn't immediately return an email from The Associated Press seeking comment. 4 Scott was charged Monday with felony witness intimidation, identity theft and two counts of bail jumping. Milwaukee County Jail Immigration agents arrested Morales Reyes, 54, on May 21 after he dropped his child off at school in Milwaukee. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the arrest, saying he had written a letter threatening to kill Trump and would 'self-deport' to Mexico. The announcement, which also was posted by the White House on its social media accounts, contained an image of the letter as well as a photo of Morales Reyes. But the claim started to unravel as investigators talked to Morales Reyes, who doesn't speak English fluently, and obtained a handwriting sample from him that was different from the handwriting in the letters, according to court documents. 4 Immigration agents arrested Morales Reyes, 54, on May 21 after he dropped his child off at school in Milwaukee. DHS Morales Reyes is listed as a victim in the case involving Scott, who is awaiting trial in Milwaukee County Jail on armed robbery and aggravated battery charges. The trial is scheduled for July. Law enforcement officers listened to several calls Scott made from the jail in which he talked about letters that needed to be mailed and a plan to get someone picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement so Scott's trial could get dismissed, according to the criminal complaint. He also admitted to police that he wrote the letters, documents said. 4 Demetric D. Scott was behind a letter sent to state and federal officials with the return address and name of Ramón Morales Reyes. AP Morales Reyes works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee, where he lives with his wife and three children. He had recently applied for a U visa, which is for people in the country illegally who become victims of serious crimes, said attorney Kime Abduli, who filed that application. Abduli told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Monday that she was glad Morales Reyes was being cleared of any involvement in the letter writing. 4 Morales Reyes recently applied for a U visa, which is for people in the country illegally who become victims of serious crimes. AP His deportation defense lawyer, Cain Oulahan, wrote in an email Monday night that the main focus now is to secure Morales Reyes' release from custody and the next step will be to pursue any relief he may qualify for in immigration court. 'While he has a U visa pending, those are unfortunately backlogged for years, so we will be looking at other options to keep him here with his family, which includes his three US citizen children,' Oulahan wrote.
