Seeb to take on Kuwait's Al Arabi in AFC Challenge
Muscat: Oman's Seeb Club are gearing up to take on Kuwait's Al Arabi on Wednesday at the latter's home at Jaber Al Mubarak Al Sabah Stadium in Sulaibikhat in the quarterfinal first-leg match of 2024-25 AFC Challenge League.
Seeb's delegation arrived in Kuwait on Monday and they will have two training sessions ahead of the encounter. The second-leg matches of quarterfinal round are on March 12 and 13 while the semifinals are scheduled on April 9 and 17 in two legs too. The final match of the AFC Challenge League will be held on May 10.
The runners-up of the HM Cup and the league leaders are entering the match with strong advantage as they have managed to win all the three matches to top Group C. Seeb had a memorable continental debut in 2022 after they lifted the historic AFC Cup. Seeb are inch closer to lift the second consecutive and fourth overall Oman Professional League shield as they are currently leading the table order of the top domestic league.
Seeb head coach Nikola Djurovic will depend on the stars who are representing the current squad of the national football team including: Jameel al Yahmadi, Mohammed al Musallami, Ahmed al Khamisi and Zaher al Aghbari besides former players like Eid al Farsi, Abdulaziz al Maqbali and others.
On the other hand, Al Arabi from Kuwait advanced to the knockout stage as the best runners-up in the West Region, besides that they are 17-time Kuwait Premier League champions. Al Arabi SC managed to earn a 2-1 win over Al Nasr in the last round of Kuwait's league and they revived their hopes to compete against Kuwait SC in the standings list of the league.
In the other matches of West Asia, the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata will host Group A winners East Bengal of India against Group B winners FC Arkadag. The home side, who won their maiden Super Cup in 2024, are appearing in a knockout stage for a fifth time and were AFC Cup semifinalists in 2013. Their opponents from Turkmenistan, meanwhile, have enjoyed a remarkable rise since being founded in 2023 – two successive league and cup doubles have been achieved by winning all 66 domestic matches to date and they will eye further progress on their continental debut.

MUSCAT, MAY 22 Ahli Sidab Club secured the 2025 Oman Hockey League title after a narrow 1-0 victory over Seeb Club in a thrilling final match at the Oman Hockey Stadium in Al Amerat on Wednesday night. The match, attended by Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, and Dr Marwan bin Juma al Juma, Chairman of the Oman Hockey Association, was filled with excitement and competitive spirit. The match began cautiously, with both teams sharing possession without creating real chances, ending the first quarter goalless. The second quarter followed a similar pattern with no goals scored. In the third quarter, Ahli Sidab's Rashad al Fazari broke the deadlock, converting a well-executed penalty corner into the only goal of the match. Despite Seeb's attempts to equalise, Ahli Sidab maintained their lead to end the quarter ahead. The final quarter saw increased pressure from Seeb, but Ahli Sidab's defence held firm until the final whistle, securing a well-earned championship title. Oman U16 basketball team gears up for Asian qualifiers
Muscat, May 22 The Oman national under-16 basketball team continues its intensive preparations for the upcoming Gulf region qualifiers for the Asian Championship, scheduled to be held in Bahrain from July 7 to 12. The top two teams from this stage will qualify for the final continental tournament, making the upcoming competition highly competitive. As part of their preparation, the team has entered a closed training camp at the Al Buraimi Sports Complex from May 22 to 24, under the supervision of Tunisian head coach Zouheir al Ayachi and his assistant, Omani coach Ali al Balushi. This camp is considered a crucial step in the team's training plan, aiming to raise the players' technical, physical, and tactical readiness and boost team cohesion ahead of the qualifiers. The camp's first training session was held on Wednesday night, focusing on developing individual skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, in addition to training on quick transitions between offence and defence, team defensive coverage, and improving physical fitness. The team is conducting two training sessions daily — morning and evening — and will conclude the camp with a friendly match against the UAE U-16 national team on Sunday, to be held in the United Arab Emirates. This match is expected to be a vital test of the team's readiness. In an exclusive statement, Coach Zouheir al Ayachi explained that the Al Buraimi camp is a continuation of earlier short camps held at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. Those camps included several important friendly matches, such as three games against the U18 national team and others against the youth teams of Seeb and Al Amerat clubs — both bolstered by U18 players. He added that the team greatly benefited from these matches, as they allowed the coaching staff to evaluate the players' performance in real-game situations and work on both weaknesses and strengths. The team also recently played a friendly match against the 'Gym Sports' Basketball Academy in Dubai, which ended in a narrow 70–76 defeat. The match was highly competitive, and all players were given an opportunity to participate. The quarter scores were as follows: Q1 (8–16), Q2 (18–19), Q3 (23–23), and Q4 (21–18). Several players stood out during the game, notably Al Mulhim al Obaidani, who scored 19 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, delivered 4 assists, made 3 blocks, and intercepted 4 passes. Adam al Hinai added 17 points and 7 steals, while Saif Al Yahyai scored 16 points, and Rashid al Issai contributed with 8 assists. Al Ayachi emphasised that such matches are instrumental in improving the team's performance, noting that the technical staff continues to work on enhancing the players' skills and readiness. He expressed confidence in the young squad's potential, seeing them as a promising foundation for the future of Oman basketball.
