
Maternal health needs all of us: Midwives, men, and the power of shared care
In a government hospital in Rajasthan, a young woman named Lakshmi enters for her prenatal checkup, her heart pounding with fear. It is her first pregnancy, and so many unknowns lie ahead. Will she face this journey alone? Then something unexpected happens… she is greeted by a midwife who wears pink scrubs and a moustache. Yes, a male midwife. He speaks softly, explains everything clearly, and includes her husband in the conversation, showing him how to support her. In that moment, Lakshmi's isolation transforms into connection. Her fear dissolves into confidence.
This is not just Lakshmi's story. This is the future of maternal healthcare in India, where no woman walks alone.
India has reduced maternal deaths by 78% between 2000 and 2023. This means one million more mothers are alive today, raising children and building communities.
How did this happen?
Over the past two decades, India's commitment to maternal healthcare has been driven by a series of government-led initiatives that are empowering women to make more informed choices about their care. During village health, sanitation and nutrition days, Ashas and auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) deliver essential services at the grassroots. At the same time, major schemes like Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) have boosted institutional deliveries whereas Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) guarantees free healthcare for mothers and newborns. Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) further offers free, quality antenatal checkups.
Newer programmes such as Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) and LaQshya have enhanced the quality of maternal care and labour rooms. Because of India's efforts to support family planning, there has been a 56% uptake of modern contraceptive use, with each woman having on average two children, empowering women to plan their families and pregnancies better. These efforts, strengthened by continuous community outreach, have improved maternal and newborn health outcomes.
But here is the hard truth: many women still face risks that are largely preventable.
In states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Assam, many women, especially from underserved communities, continue to face life-threatening risks during childbirth, especially in remote areas.
These women are not statistics. They have names, families, hopes, and rights. Progress means ensuring that every woman, regardless of where she lives, her financial and social identity, has access to the care she needs to bring new life into the world safely and with dignity.
The solution is not complicated. It lies with having more midwives. Around the world evidence shows that when midwives are trained and integrated into health systems, they can deliver nearly 90% of essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health (SRMNAH) services. Recognising this, India has been building something remarkable since 2018: a group of highly skilled nurse practitioners in midwifery.
Across 12 states, eight national and 14 state midwifery training institutes are shaping a new generation of midwives. The institutions do not just teach clinical excellence… they nurture compassion, empathy, and respect. Many are embracing cutting-edge tools like virtual reality simulations, giving trainees hands-on experience before they step into labour rooms.
These midwives are not just healthcare providers; they are guardians of safe birth and champions of women's dignity. And now increasingly, they are men.
However, when male nurse in a conservative community decides to become a midwife, he faces multiple challenges. His friends taunt him. His family questions. Society raises eyebrows. Yet he persists.
Why? Because he sees something others do not: that bringing life into the world should not be a women's burden alone. Real strength is not shown by standing outside the delivery room, it is demonstrated by standing beside a woman during her most vulnerable hours.
At SMTI (State Midwifery Training Institute) Jaipur, male midwives often share a common insight: 'It is not about big gestures. It is the small things that matter, welcoming and reassuring her when she comes into labour, explaining procedures clearly, respecting her choices, involving her family.' These male midwives are cultural catalysts, redefining masculinity one birth at a time.
The change extends beyond the hospital. Husbands who once paced nervously outside are now invited in to hold hands, to wipe tears, to witness the miracle of their child's first breath. And something remarkable happens: Men who participate in birth tend to participate in childcare. They support recovery. They become advocates for women's health. In communities across India, fathers who have been present during childbirth share a common sentiment: 'I thought giving birth was a woman's business. Now I understand this is a family concern.'
Midwifery-led care can prevent two-thirds of maternal and newborn deaths by 2035. Every $1 invested in midwives brings up to 16 times the return in social and economic benefits. With 26 million births a year and a shortage of 1.8 million healthcare workers, India needs smart, urgent solutions. Midwives, trained faster and at lower cost than doctors, can bridge the gap handling normal pregnancies so doctors can focus on complex cases.
The way ahead is simple: Expand midwife training, bring more men into the profession, promote family-centered births, and strengthen community support for women's health. Above all, maternal health must be seen as a basic human right.

Weekly Health Check-Up Camp Launched for Municipal Staff Under Telangana's 100-Day Action Plan
Gadwal: As part of the Telangana State Government's prestigious 100-Day Action Plan, a health check-up camp was organized at the Aija Municipal Office in Jogulamba Gadwal district. This initiative was spearheaded by Municipal Commissioner CH Saidulu, in coordination with Medical Officer Dr. Kiran Kumar. Addressing the occasion, Commissioner Mr. Saidulu emphasized that the Telangana government is implementing the 100-Day Plan with a strong focus on welfare and health across departments. He announced that every Friday, a health camp will be conducted within the municipal office premises, exclusively for sanitation workers, water supply staff, electrical department employees, revenue staff, and other municipal officers. The camp includes basic health screenings such as blood pressure (BP) and blood sugar (diabetes) tests. The Commissioner also mentioned that those already diagnosed with conditions such as hypertension or diabetes will be provided with necessary medications, and if required, will be referred to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) for further lab testing and consultation. The event witnessed active participation from key personnel, including: Lakshanna, Senior Municipal Assistant, Vijay, Junior Assistant, Srinivasulu, Supervisor from, the Primary Health Centre, Obulesh, PHC staff, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) Other municipal officers and staff members. This initiative is seen as a step toward promoting the health and well-being of municipal workers who are the backbone of public service delivery. The weekly check-ups are expected to help in early detection of health issues and ensure timely medical intervention, thus enhancing the overall productivity and welfare of the staff.

Govt launches ‘Saheli': ASHAs to help check illegal abortions in Haryana
Gurgaon: 'Saheli' is changing the lives of women like never before. Fifty thousand Sahelis — 20,000 ASHAs and 30,000 ANMs — are making daily calls and visits to pregnant women across the state for real-time monitoring and swift reporting of miscarriages. With a view to preventing unsafe and illegal abortions, a new initiative — Saheli programme — was launched by the health department on Wednesday, with ASHAs (accredited social health activists) directed to alert medical officers immediately on any miscarriage. Gurgaon has already implemented the new initiative. Seventeen villages that have less than 700 sex ratio at birth (SRB) for the last three consecutive years are being monitored more strictly. These villages are located in Bhora Kalan, Pataudi, Farukhnagar and Ghangola areas. Chief medical officer (Gurgaon) Dr Alka Singh said, "To tighten regulation, all registered medical practitioners (RMPs) must now source MTP kits exclusively from Life Line Medicare, Sushant Lok, while the supplier is mandated to submit monthly sales data for cross-verification." "Under the Saheli initiative, 3,120 ASHAs are now making daily calls to pregnant women for real-time monitoring and prompt miscarriage reporting in Gurgaon," the CMO said. Haryana's SRB fell from 916 in 2023 to 910 last year. Haryana has for decades struggled with a skewed sex ratio, often attributed to practices like female foeticide and a strong preference for a boy child. \ At 834, Haryana's SRB was the lowest among all Indian states when data was studied in the 2011 Census. The state improved its count to 923 by 2019 but started seeing a downward trend thereafter. Meanwhile, this constant care is not appreciated by all. "I understand they want to help, but it feels like I am under a microscope. Every day, a call, a visit — like I am being watched more than cared for. I am pregnant, not a suspect," Urmila Singla, a resident of Pataudi, said. Between Jan and May 2025, the district registered seven FIRs under the MTP Act and two under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act, reflecting increased vigilance and enforcement. Senior medical officers (SMOs) have been tasked with conducting fortnightly meetings with frontline health workers and monitoring birth and death registrations. Any unusual trends must be reported with explanations. Interestingly, in Gurgaon, 712 MTPs were recorded among women with more than one girl child, but none were flagged as suspicious, prompting the department to initiate reverse tracking in suspected cases involving over-the-counter MTP kit misuse. "We have also started to reverse trace the cases. Sahelis are told to inform about any miscarriages to their respective medical officers," the CMO added. Additionally, 23 suspected illegal MTP cases are under investigation by BAMS doctors, while 50 BHMS and 328 BAMS practitioners have been registered to support the initiative. The Saheli initiative is being hailed as a model for community-based maternal health surveillance, combining technology, grassroots engagement and regulatory oversight to protect women's health and uphold the law.

Chhapra: Saran civil surgeon (CS) Dr Sagar Dulal Sinha has said that getting tested for HIV and syphilis is the first step in accepting the responsibility of motherhood for any pregnant woman. Making this appeal to the newly wed couple, the CS on Monday said that the symptoms of the two diseases may not be visible in the beginning, and if remained undetected, the infection may pass on to the child creating serious health problems, even death. "Pregnant women must come forward for the HIV test without any fear or hesitation. In case, the blood sample confirms the presence of HIV or syphilis beforehand, the foetus could be saved from adverse effects. The facilities for these tests are available in all govt health centres free of cost, the CS said, adding Ashas, ANMs and other health workers have been creating awareness about these tests in different villages. The CS suggested to get these tests for marriage to be on a safe side. The CS said that unsafe sex, use of infected syringe or needle, and infected blood transfusion are some of the possible reasons for the infection of HIV or syphilis.
