Roughriders hit the field for Day 1 of regular season practice
Trevor Harris felt like a kid on Christmas on Sunday.
With the CFL pre-season in the books, the Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback — back for his 13th season in the CFL — and the rest of his teammates hit the field at Mosaic Stadium for Day 1 of practice in Week 1 of a brand-new season.
'Everybody kind of longs for that feeling of waking up Christmas morning not knowing what Santa Claus brought you,' Harris said ahead of Saskatchewan's season opener on Thursday (7 p.m., TSN) against the visiting Ottawa Redblacks. 'And that's what football season is. It still gives me butterflies in my stomach coming out here to practice every single day.'
For Harris, who is one of Saskatchewan's many returning veterans, he's grateful to be back under centre for a third year with the Roughriders after missing time with separate knee injuries in back-to-back years.
'When you strap the helmet on, you feel like you're a kid out here,' said Harris, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Saturday. 'I don't feel my age.
'There's been a lot of times where I didn't know when the next snap (would be) or if it was going to happen, or when it was going to happen, and a lot of times where I thought it was going to be done.
'I'm just really, really thankful that I'm here and getting the opportunity to be the quarterback this franchise. It's something that I'll never take for granted.'
Following two pre-season games and an 18-day training camp, the Roughriders were forced to make roster decisions on Saturday as the team cut 17 players, added 11 to the practice roster, returned five to school and suspended one.
And while it was an exciting day for some of the players to find out they had made the team, there were also some tough conversations with the players who were let go.
'You get to know these guys on a little bit of a deeper level and you know that's our decision to do that, knowing that the inevitable of just making final cuts, but it never makes it easier,' said Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. 'It's not an awesome day, until you get that first team meeting.'
While the biggest names who were released were twin linebackers Justin and Jordan Herdman-Reed, the Roughriders found a way to keep all four quarterbacks on the roster with Harris, Jake Maier, Tommy Stevens and Jack Coan all sticking around.
'When you have good quarterbacks, you don't let them go,' said Harris. 'I think that there's quite a few guys that could be franchise quarterbacks in that room.
'I think we're all learning from each other, and I think that everybody's better than us in some way, and in that, we're always learning.'
While Harris is the unquestioned starter, Maier provides solid experience as a backup while Stevens will handle short-yardage duties. Coan, in his second year, appears to be a promising prospect the Roughriders want to keep around to develop.
'I thought Jack played a really good pre-season game, and he's been showing his skill set throughout camp and truthfully throughout his time with us since he's been here,' said Mace. 'So, we wanted to see if there was a way that we can get all four and glad that we got that done to have those guys here.'
While many are predicting Saskatchewan to have a strong season this year, Harris says it's important for the group to focus on one day at a time. However, they aren't shying away from the high expectations either.
'It's about building that great team from Day 1,' said Harris. 'I think a lot of times people do talk about the expectations or whatever, but ultimately, it's how we perform and how we build and how we grow as a team each and every day.
'But if you have expectations, that means you've done something right in the past, and you're going in the right direction. So I think we're in going in the right way.'

Ex-Arsenal player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas sentenced to four years for involvement in drug smuggling plot
The former Arsenal player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been sentenced to four years in prison for his involvement in an attempt to smuggle 60 kilograms of cannabis into the United Kingdom. The 34-year-old will serve one year and seven months, having already served nine months on remand, before being released on license. The maximum sentence for cannabis importation in the UK is 14 years in prison. Advertisement At Thursday's sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court, Emmanuel-Thomas sat behind a glass-panelled dock in a grey suit jacket, flanked by two security officials. Prosecutor David Josse KC told the court that Emmanuel-Thomas was expecting a payment of £5,000 ($6,800) for his part in getting the cannabis into the country. 'It is clear this was about money despite you being in a position where you had the privilege of playing football as a living,' the judge, Alexander Mills, told Emmanuel-Thomas. 'It is through your own actions that you will no longer be known for being a professional footballer. You will be known as a criminal, a professional footballer who threw it all away, and put others at risk of imprisonment, in pursuit of money.' Appearing via videolink from HMP Chelmsford on May 21, Emmanuel-Thomas pleaded guilty to the charge of fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis, between July 1 2024 and September 2, 2024, at Chelmsford Crown Court. The former England youth international had been detained by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in September 2024 after the cannabis was detected in suitcases which had arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand to London's Stansted Airport on September 2. The suitcases belonged to Rosie Rowland, 29, and Yasmin Piotrowska, 33, the latter being Emmanuel-Thomas' partner. Having been arrested at Stansted, charges against the women, who denied their involvement at an earlier hearing, were dropped by the prosecution. In May, Josse told the court that the investigation into their involvement was discontinued after analysis of Emmanuel-Thomas's mobile phone. 'They thought they were importing gold, not cannabis,' Josse said. Emmanuel-Thomas initially denied his involvement in importing class B drugs at a hearing at Carlisle Magistrates' Court in September but changed his plea to guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court in May. Advertisement He had been playing at Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton, who terminated his contract after he was charged. After making one Premier League appearance for Arsenal, Emmanuel-Thomas left the north London side in 2011. He then played for clubs including Ipswich Town, Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers, as well as teams in India and Thailand, before joining Morton in July 2024. Cathay Pacific's Luxe New Business Class Suite Is Now Available on This North America-to-Asia Route
If you're planning a trip to Hong Kong, get ready: the flight is about to be more comfortable and luxurious than ever before. Cathay Pacific is introducing its new Aria Suite business class, which will be available on selected flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) daily starting June 15. This is the third long-haul route for the Aria Suite, which was originally introduced in Hong Kong in October 2024. From now until Oct. 25, Cathay will run 17 non-stop flights between Vancouver and Hong Kong three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Aria Suite reimagines the business class cabin to be both stylish and comfortable, with close attention to craftsmanship and design details. It features a more spacious cabin and redesigned wrap-around seats that allow for more privacy, as well as a suite door and sliding partition. Lie-flat beds are outfitted with Rohi's ethically sourced wool for breathable comfort throughout the flight. The Aria Suite also offers wireless phone charging, intuitively designed storage spaces, and artwork that has a connection to Hong Kong. The Aria Suite will be progressively rolled out throughout the year on Cathay's fleet of retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. 'We are proud to continue our commitment to offering an unparalleled level of comfort and convenience by bringing our highly anticipated Aria Suite to our North American customers,' Chris Vanden Hooven, Cathay Pacific Senior Vice President (Americas), said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . 'Just over 40 years ago, Vancouver was our first long-haul passenger route between North America and Hong Kong. We are thrilled to introduce the Aria Suite to the Americas via Vancouver, further demonstrating the importance of the region to Cathay Pacific.' Last month, Cathay expanded its routes to include a new non-stop flight between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Hong Kong, making it the longest flight in the Cathay network. 'With the recent launch of Cathay Pacific's new route between Dallas Fort Worth and Hong Kong, the first to connect the airline with the southern region of the United States, we're further strengthening our commitment to connecting North America with Hong Kong,' Vanden Hooven said in the statement. 'Our customers will have even more options, with over 110 return passenger flights per week between North America and Hong Kong this summer, ensuring seamless travel and enhanced connectivity for all.'
