Alfa Romeo Reportedly Set to Sunset Gas-Powered Giulia, Stelvio
Alfa Romeo is gearing up for the debut of its next-generation models, but the flip side of that apparently will be the demise of some of its beloved current vehicles. The company's dealers in Italy have reportedly received a memo outlining the end of the current gas-powered Giulia and Stelvio nameplates, with production of those fan-favorite models allegedly set to wind down over the course of the year.
According to the alleged memo, which was first posted to the r/AlfaRomeo subreddit and then shared more broadly by MoparInsiders, the Giulia Quadrifoglio will the first model to get the axe, with March 31 being the last date to place orders. That vehicle has already been off the market in the States since the end of model year 2024, but remains on sale in Europe for the time being. The hot version of the Stelvio will reportedly follow suit, with the memo stating order books will close April 30.
The death of those models will see the end — for now, at least, of the Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, which propelled the pair to rival the likes of BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. Sprint, Veloce, and Intensa trims, which feature the brand's turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, will reportedly no longer be available for order after May 31. After that, customers will only be able to purchase a Stelvio or Giulia with the 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine on offer in Europe.
Road & Track has reached out to Alfa Romeo for confirmation on the aforementioned timeline. We'll update this story with any statement provided by the automaker.
Of course, we already know there won't be too long a wait before the new models arrive. MoparInsiders has reported the new Stelvio SUV, which is slated to ride on Stellantis's STLA Large Platform, should debut on June 24 to celebrate the brand's 115th anniversary. Given the flexible nature of the platform, don't be surprised to see a variety of powertrain options find their way to the SUV, including traditional combustion, hybrids, and pure electric variants.
Alfa has also confirmed plans to replace the current Giulia, though that model isn't expected to break cover until 2026 (potentially, however, as a crossover). That said, a similar powertrain lineup would likely be expected for the sedan. No word yet on what the future holds for the Quadrifoglio models, but BMW's hybridized M5 might be a good hint at what's to come.

Peugeot announced the return of the GTi badge with the new e-208 GTi hatchback. The electric hot hatch makes 276 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque from its lone front-mounted motor. That may not sound like much here in the U.S., but the GTi has 142 more horsepower than the standard e-208 hatchback. The tracks have been widened by 2.2 inches at the front and 1.0 inch at the rear. The suspension is fitted with hydraulic bump stops, dropping the ride height by 1.1 inches. The steering is also said to have been tuned for a more direct response during spirited driving. The real performance upgrade comes to the tires, with Peugeot equipping the e-208 GTi with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. In typical GTi fashion, the e-208 gets a visual makeover to match the performance upgrades. In addition to the wider and lower stance, the GTi gets a more aggressive front lip, along with a sizable spoiler and a large diffuser at the rear. There's A Lot to Like About Cadillac's Chances to Win 24 Hours of Le Mans
After its four teams advanced to Hyperpole, Cadillac locked up the front row in qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There's only one goal left for the American manufacturer. Can Cadillac win the 93rd running of the world's most famous sports car race? The odds look better than any of the first two years that Cadillac V-Series.R teams have raced at Le Mans with their LMDh hybrids against the dominant LMH hybrids of Ferrari and Toyota. This year, a Cadillac was either first or second in the first three practices and in the qualifying sessions. The key is avoiding major errors, said Gary Nelson, the team manager for the No. 311 V-Series.R of Action Express Racing that qualified eighth. 'The last two years, the big thing for us was making mistakes,' said Nelson. 'We're always trying to not repeat our mistakes and hopefully we don't come up with some new ones. Then we'll see where the cards fall.' The British Jota team and its pole-winning No. 12 driven by Alex Lynn and the runner-up No. 38 of Earl Bamber contested the first three rounds of the World Endurance Championship as newcomers to Cadillac, having replaced Chip Ganassi Racing as the factory representative for the GM brand. Entering the Test Day, Jota relied on the massive compilation of digital records from Action Express's previous two trips to Le Mans. Last year, Jota won at Spa with its Porsche 963, the only privateer team to have won a Hypercar race in the WEC. With seventh on the grid its best showing, the Ferrari crews of AF Corse, winners of the first three WEC rounds and the last two Le Mans 24-hours, appeared to be focused on race preparation. The new Balance of Performance (BoP) has dictated compensating for a loss of top speed. According to drivers, the search for lap times has played havoc with the 499P's race set-up. But, throwing down a gauntlet, the Ferraris were first and second in the final night practice. Toyota Gazoo Racing also appeared to be focused on consistent race pace in place of qualifying. After the No. 7 GR010 Hybrid surprisingly missed the Top 15 in the first round, the No. 8 managed only 10th in the final round. Qualifying lasts for just one flying lap on low fuel and fresh Michelins. The grueling race is another matter. 'The hard work really starts (once qualifying ends),' said Will Stevens, co-driver in the No. 12 Cadillac. 'It's a long road ahead but after qualifying we're pretty confident.' If the new BoP has indeed brought the LMH cars of Ferrari and Toyota back to the field, it means Cadillac, including the Wayne Taylor Racing entry that starts 14th, will have plenty of competition from the fellow LMDh-based cars of Alpine, BMW and Porsche. Porsche Penske Motorsport will be in its third season of a three-car entry. But it has not been Penske perfect with the No. 6 Porsche 963 being banished to the back of the field for being underweight in qualifying. Before Mathieu Jaminet qualified his No. 5 Porsche third, a wheel came off on course. "We've had a busy and quite difficult few days, but qualifying has shown once again: When it comes down to it, our team is fully there," said Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske. The No. 4 Porsche, where Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy will try to add a Le Mans victory to wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Sebring 12-Hour, starts fifth. Laurens Vanthoor, starting 21st in the No. 6, will also try to complete endurance racing's triple after co-driving with Nasr and Tandy in Daytona and Sebring. The BMW M Team WRT (fourth and sixth on the grid), and the Alpine Endurance Team (ninth and 12th) each gave Ferrari a run in the previous round at Spa and can be expected to challenge in the 24-hour, where fuel mileage, pit strategy and tire wear will be significant factors as well as track position and driving. Only the new Aston Martin Valkyrie and Peugeot's still struggling 9X8 are considered such long shots in a crowded field that they are out of the running.

Ferrari boss hits back at Italian media spreading rumours: ‘Too much is too much'
MONTREAL - Fred Vasseur made a brief cameo in the 'F1' blockbuster movie coming to theatres this month. The Ferrari team principal wonders if the big-screen audition might help him land a second career in acting, since so many Italian newspapers are calling for his ousting. 'I'm looking for a new job,' he said, filling a news conference room with laughter Friday at the Canadian Grand Prix. Multiple reports suggest Vasseur's future is under threat at Ferrari as top-tier drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc fall short of race wins so far this season. Some outlets have also written that Leclerc might take his talents to another garage. And speculation that the 40-year-old Hamilton might retire is routine — even though he's only just joined Ferrari on a multi-year contract. 'I have to stay calm, because I will have to finish at the stewards,' Vasseur said, hoping not to get fined. 'It's some Italian media, it's not all Italian media. 'I don't understand the target. Perhaps it's to give (crap) to the team, but in this case, I don't see the point. Perhaps it's for them the only way to exist. This is probably more the reason, but it's really hurting the team.' Vasseur joined Ferrari in 2023 and came 17 points shy of securing its first constructors' championship since 2008 last year. The prestigious Italian outfit — with a record 16 titles — is on a quest to return to its past dominance and had expectations of competing for a championship this season. Ferrari, however, trails McLaren by 197 points despite ranking second in the constructors' standings heading into Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix — the 10th stop of the 24-race circuit. For reference, a driver earns 25 points for one win. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, joined Ferrari in a highly anticipated move last winter but has yet to reach the podium in red. He and Leclerc — who has reached three podiums — rank sixth and fifth, respectively, in the drivers' championship. Despite his relatively slow start with Ferrari, Hamilton came to the defence of his boss Thursday. 'I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top,' he said. 'To me, it's all nonsense what people have written.' 'And also, to everyone writing stories of me considering not racing — I literally only just started here with Ferrari. I'm here for several years, and I'm here for the long haul,' he later added. 'There's zero doubts. Please stop making stuff up.' As for the Leclerc rumours, the Monégasque driver was shocked to hear them. Leclerc is racing in his seventh season with Ferrari and under a long-term contract. 'I have no idea where it's coming from,' Leclerc said. 'I've never said anything of this in the last few races. If anything, I keep saying how much I love the team and how much I want to bring back Ferrari to the top.' Added Vasseur: 'Each single interview from the beginning of the season, he is telling that he wants to stay with Ferrari, he wants to win with Ferrari, his future is with Ferrari. But every single Monday we have an article telling that, 'Ah, Charles will go next year.'' Even former Ferrari pilot Carlos Sainz Jr., who Hamilton replaced as Leclerc's teammate, chimed in. 'The moment that the results don't click in Ferrari, there's always finger-pointing by the media, and all this chaos happening,' said Sainz, who now races for Williams. Leclerc finished third last time out at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Hamilton placed sixth. Hamilton said both drivers had issues 'hindering us massively' midway through the race, calling it 'the worst-feeling car I'd ever had.' Ferrari has apparently solved the issue heading into the Canadian Grand Prix, although Friday's first free practice was far from ideal. Leclerc crashed his front left wheel into the wall at Turn 4 less than 10 minutes into the session. He needed a new chassis and missed the second free practice. 'None of us is satisfied with how it's going at the moment, that's clear. We came into the season thinking that we had chances to challenge McLaren and Red Bull in order to win the championship,' Leclerc said Thursday. 'If we compare ourselves to our other competitors, apart from McLaren, it's not like we are having a shocking season. 'We just need to find ourselves as well, just like Mercedes, just like Red Bull, needs to find the outstanding thing that McLaren have found.' Mercedes' George Russell posted the fastest lap in the second free practice at one minute 12.123 seconds, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris (1:12.151) and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli (1:12.411). Hamilton drove around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1:12.653 — the eighth fastest time — on a sunny, 19 C day in Montreal. Another session takes place Saturday afternoon before qualifying.
