AFL trade news: Huge Harley Reid asking price, free agency latest

Herald Suna day ago

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Some Victorian clubs are getting cold feet on bids this year for Harley Reid given the vast bounty they would have to give up and his likely astronomical wage.
For Reid to move back this year and break his contract he would need to be paid at least $1.8 million a season on a long-term deal.
While he has had his moments, he has also had his challenges with up-and-down form for the battling Eagles.
Contracted until the end of 2026, those close to him have also given off the feeling that he is easing into Perth life.
Richmond and Essendon both have a pair of top-10 picks while Geelong is seen as another suitor for Reid.
Reid is rated below average by Champion Data for disposals, clearances and contested possessions but above average for his kicking.
The brilliant second-year star had a disrupted pre-season and is certain to emerge as one of the stars of the game.
But clubs committing as many as three first round picks would need to be certain he is a generational player to hand him upwards of $10 million in six year deals or longerr STARCEVICH, WORPEL WEIGH UP OFFERS
Brisbane defender Brandon Starcevich is keen to remain at the Lions now that he has overcome his concussion battle as the list of restricted free agents shrinks to three.
Starcevich, Hawthorn's James Worpel and West Coast's Oscar Allen are the only restricted agents on a day when Collingwood's unrestricted free agent Brayden Maynard locked in a four-year deal.
Starcevich's contract talks have been on hold, but now that he is back this weekend in Lions colours he will again get those talks back on track.
The WA local had requested a two-year offer from the Lions in a deal that would have given him the option of unrestricted free agency or a move to Tasmania in 2028.
But he could end up asking for a longer deal or take up that offer to 2028 after going home in coming weeks to ensure he is keen to be locked in at the Lions.
The fact he is a restricted free agent as one of the top nine paid players at Brisbane shows he has been well rewarded for his form.
The Herald Sun reported last week that Carlton is certain unrestricted free agent Jack Silvagni will remain at the club as talks near.
Silvagni is keen to stay at Carlton and will secure a pay rise after his spectacular year as a key position defender.
But those talks will still have to resolve how many years the 27-year-old signs for and the scope of that pay rise.
If rivals were clamouring for his services it would be easier to get a huge deal but he is likely to settle for a more modest rise to remain a third-generation Blue.
Hawthorn's James Worpel is also considering whether to accept a similar two-year offer that would give him the chance to use Tasmania as leverage or even move south.
The Hawks remain confident he will stay but to this stage have not blown him off the park with their offer.
Essendon's unrestricted Sam Draper is a long way apart on financial terms with the Dons on a four-year deal but in an ideal world would like to stay if he can play in his preferred position as first ruck.
Draper is unrestricted after the Dons completed 2024 deals for players including Jy Caldwell that put him out of the club's top nine players for 2025. SUNS FACE NERVOUS WAIT AS ROWELL WEIGHS UP FUTURE
Gold Coast star Matt Rowell has gone away with mates across the mid-season bye before considering his future as the Suns nervously await a decision.
They are confident he will soon commence contract talks that would see him likely locked away for two more years to free agency.
But given that timeline for talks has been easing back since round 8, there is a real sense of nervousness at Gold Coast.
The Suns would want an A grader in return for Rowell if he did decide to leave instead of draft picks, which means a trade would be especially hard to broker.
Gold Coast is in the window and so isn't interested in draft picks for yet more kids, but remains bullish he is just concentrating on his own form before committing MCVEE TO STAY A DEMON BUT IN NO RUSH TO SIGN
Melbourne's Judd McVee wants to stay at the Demons but isn't yet in a hurry to commit.
The West Australia's management met with the Demons last week but the offer is not yet at a stage where he would be keen to sign it.
With McVee back from a long-running hamstring injury, Daniel Turner emerging as an intercepting back and Jake Bowey in terrific form, the Demons backline is taking shape.
Steven May was in super form in the one-point loss to Collingwood, with Jake Lever easing back from an ankle concern.
So the nucleus of the Demons' back six is there for future years, which makes securing 21-year-old McVee so important given he can lock away dangerous smalls and mid-sizers. DOGS EYE NEXT DEALS DESPITE BONT DELAY
The Dogs will turn their attention to trying to secure youngsters including Joel Freijah long-term in coming weeks even as they work on a deal for 2025 free agent Marcus Bontempelli.
The Dogs are adamant Bontempelli is no chance to leave the club but has just had some life issues including his engagement and the starting of a new cafe to concentrate on.
Those talks should kick off in coming weeks.
Veterans Liam Jones and Adam Treloar are also out of contract this year.
Freijah is out of contract next year along with Ryley Sanders, Harvey Gallagher and Jordan Croft.
Freijah is one of footy's rising stars given his emergence as a pacy, explosive midfielder, while Sanders is in no hurry given he is a Tasmanian likely to get a massive multimillion-dollar offer to move south. How footy's greatest salary dump changed trading forever

Newcastle preview: Elegant Empress poised to bounce back

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Warwick Farm trainer Jarrod Austin is banking on a drop back in grade and distance to help deliver a confidence boosting win for his handy mare Elegant Empress. The five-year-old resumed with a safely held third behind Photograph at Canterbury and followed up with a fifth behind Apex at her home track after being forced to race wide when the leader Struck Gold stayed two or three horses wide throughout. 'We could have opted to go to softer races in her first couple of runs but I know her first couple of runs up are there among the best of her preparation,' said Austin. 'We elected to run her in town hoping to get that city win with her. 'We have just missed a couple of times now. She ran second at Warwick Farm first-up last preparation to World Alliance and this time around, she ran third at Canterbury on a heavy track. 'I though that was an excellent run. 'I thought her last run was excellent too after coving ground. They were just a bit too good for her on the day.' Elegant Empress comes down from Benchmark 72 races in town to the Cambridge Classic Benchmark 64 Handicap and is also dropping back from 1100m to 900m. 'She has never been over 900 metres, she only raced over 1000 and 1100 metres,' he said. 'I definitely think she will appreciate the 900 metres more than the 1100 metres. It's just a touch too far for her, especially against that quality of opposition in town. 'Plus dropping to the provincials will definitely help her.' Austin is also looking forward to seeing Jewel County back at the races following a setback after her debut run. The three-year-old filly made her debut at Newcastle on April 23 when fourth behind Mignonette. 'I thought she ran really well first-up,' Austin said. 'She had a little setback between runs and we had to give her a couple of weeks off to get over that. 'I was really encouraged by her first-up run and I thought her trial was nice at Rosehill last week.' Jewel County returns in the Air Control Australia Midway 3YO Maiden Handicap (1400m) where she has drawn the outside in barrier 8. 'She is bred to get over a lot further than the 1250 metres she raced over first-up. She actually bred to get a lot further than the 1400 metres this weekend,' he said. 'She will be better when we can step her up to a mile and even further but I think she finds the right race here to kick off again. 'I think she's a great chance. Jewel County hails from one of the great families in the Australian and New Zealand Studbooks. Not only is she by French Derby and English and Irish Champion Stakes winner Almanzor, himself a son of boom sire Wootton Bassett, she is from a sister to Don Eduardo and Peruzzi and a three-quarter sister to Tristalove and Antwerp. Austin, meanwhile, reported that his stable star Terra Mater has come through her first-up run well in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes at Eagle Farm where she finished midfield behind Zaszou. 'I was happy with her run. She put herself into the race from an awkward gate,' he said. 'She hit the front at the top of the straight and for a few strides, I thought she was going to make a real race of it but her condition just gave out late. 'She will more than likely head back to Queensland for the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich on Saturday week.'

AFL: Oscar McInerney to return for Brisbane in the reserves

Lions coach Chris Fagan wants Oscar McInerney to play a game in the reserves before deciding if Brisbane's first-choice ruckman's recovering body is up to the rigours of AFL football McInerney, who has been nursing back and other niggling injuries, is set to miss a fifth straight top-flight match on Saturday after again being named among the emergencies for Brisbane's clash with the GWS Giants at the Gabba. However, the 30-year-old big man will play for the Lions' VFL team on Sunday against the GWS reserves at Springfield. But Fagan has taken a different approach with two other fit-again players in defender Brandon Starcevich and forward Sam Day, who have both been brought straight back into the Lions' AFL team after longer periods on the sidelines than McInerney with respective concussion and hamstring problems. Brisbane ruckman Oscar McInerney must prove his body is up to the rigours of the AFL. Picture:'Oscar is an emergency for the AFL team, so if we needed him (on Saturday), he could play, but if we don't need him, he'll have a run in the reserves on Sunday just to see how he pulls up from all his various things,' Fagan said on Friday. 'If he gets through that, then he's back in line for proper consideration for the (AFL) team. 'We just want to see how his body pulls up after a game. The last time he played (against North Melbourne on May 11), his body couldn't get through the game for various reasons, so he and we want to make sure that's the case. 'He'd be frustrated, but he's grateful for the time off, and I know his body feels as good as it's felt in a long time … but you don't really know until you get into a game. 'We're just hopeful that once he gets into a game, that he can pull up well, and then we can keep moving forward.' While not yet certain about McInerney, Fagan was confident that both Starcevich and Day were ready for an AFL return. Starcevich's only match this season was Brisbane's four-point win over Sydney on March 15 when he suffered a third concussion in the space of eight months. 'He's been pretty close to being right for a few weeks,' Fagan said. 'He's done a great training block and I've never seen him look so fit. 'He's had plenty of time for his brain to get better. He's gone through all the protocols and tests that he could. 'I basically let him do what he needed to do for him to put his own hand up when he was ready. 'It's been a little bit elongated because he had about a month where he couldn't train, and he needed to recondition again so that he could be ready to play AFL footy. 'That's been what the slow part of the process has been.' Brandon Starcevich will return on Saturday for the Brisbane Lions. Picture:Day hasn't played since injuring his hamstring in Brisbane's 17-point QClash win over his former club Gold Coast on May 4. 'It's good to have him back. I felt like our forward line was functioning really well when he was part of the team,' Fagan said of the ex-Sun who came to Brisbane in the off-season following the retirement of premiership-winning forward Joe Daniher. 'He doesn't kick many goals, but he does a lot of work that helps others kick goals, so we think his experience will help us in this game.' The Lions are aiming to bounce back from their five-point loss to Adelaide last Friday, while the Giants are searching for consistency, having been up and down this season with a record of seven wins and six losses. The Giants are also chasing revenge after the Lions fought back from 44 points down in the third quarter to end GWS' finals campaign last season with a five-point win at Engie Stadium. 'They're a very, very good team, and we're more than aware of that,' Fagan said. 'We had some tough battles with them last year. We were lucky to win that final. It was a miraculous comeback. We wouldn't want to be doing that (on Saturday). 'They've got an exceptionally talented team, and they can beat any team in the competition on their day, but so can we, so it'll make for a good clash.' Fagan said the Lions were preparing for Giants star Toby Greene to play, with GWS expected to make a decision on his availability just hours before the game after he suffered a corked left hip/glute injury in his team's 16-point loss to Port Adelaide last Saturday. 'We'll just have to wait and see what happens when the team sheets come out, but we're planning for Toby to be in,' the Lions coach said. 'He's a very good player, so that's the best thing to do, and we'll just adjust if need be.' Marco Monteverde Sports reporter Marco Monteverde is a Brisbane-based sports reporter for NCA Newswire.
