over the government's inaction against social media accounts allegedly affiliated with the BJP, accusing them of posting "obscene and hateful comments" targeting the wife of a Navy officer killed in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, after she appealed for communal harmony.
"It is shocking to see the obscene & hateful comments being directed towards the widow of the Navy officer who was killed in Pahalgam. Most accounts spreading venom are BJP-affiliated. Why? Only because she appealed for communal harmony," said Gokhale in a post on X. Further, directly calling out Vaishanaw, he added, "IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw should answer - why aren't these accounts being taken down or blocked? Are trolls from your party immune from the ambit of the law even when they target a victim & a widow of a slain armed forces officer? Is this your 'nationalism'?"

Lieutenant Narwal received complete military honours last week at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. His coffin was met by his grieving family, Navy officials, and political figures, including Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Delhi CM Rekha Gupta.
His wife Himanshi, overcome with emotion, embraced and saluted his coffin. Through tears, she had said, "Let his soul rest in peace. He lived a good life. He made us really proud, and we should continue to uphold that pride in every way."
The tragedy struck while the newlyweds were holidaying in Pahalgam, having married on April 16. The final rites took place on Wednesday evening in Karnal, Haryana, where Lieutenant Narwal's hometown is situated. His sister Shristi, aged 21, conducted the last rites as thousands of people gathered to pay their respects while the Navy personnel gave a gun salute.

SEP: Recommendation to regulate deemed varsities sparks debate
Chennai: In its recommendations for State Education Policy (SEP), the high-level committee headed by Justice D Murugesan has recommended that deemed universities in the state be regulated. This recommendation has, however, stirred up a debate as academicians said deemed universities were established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, and state govts cannot regulate them. As per the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), there are 35 deemed universities functioning in the state. These institutions have an approximate intake of more than 60,000 students in undergraduate courses. There were complaints that a few of them are providing substandard education while some are enrolling students who could not clear engineering exams in affiliated colleges and awarding them degrees. "A regulatory body with the powers to regulate 'deemed to be universities' should be put in place," the Justice Murugesan committee said in its 550-page report to the govt. It also suggested bringing a separate act by the name 'Tamil Nadu Higher Education Institutions (Private) Registrations Act' and conditions for the grant of a no-objection certificate to deemed universities. "Deemed universities are functioning like uncontrolled entities. Except for academic autonomy, the state govt should have a say in admissions, fees, and other issues," a source in the high-level committee said. Academicians say the state govt cannot regulate deemed universities that were established by UGC Act. Representatives from the deemed universities said only UGC can prescribe guidelines to the institutions. "State govt can interfere only with law and order issues. For any academic and regulatory issues, they cannot interfere with the deemed universities," Anna University former vice-chancellor E Balagurusamy said. "NBA and NAAC accreditations by deemed universities show they follow certain regulations. State govt has no power to control them," he added. Madras University former vice-chancellor S P Thyagarajan concurred with this view. "State govt cannot control the deemed universities as far as academic and administrative functions," he said.

New Delhi: Inside a hall adorned with brightly coloured banners of BJP's minority wing at Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday, a chaupal was organised to encourage women to join the Indian Army. It was a stark contrast to the passionate protests that echoed through the lanes of Shaheen Bagh in 2020. Shaheen Bagh was the epicentre of the CAA-NRC protest in 2020. The chaupal drew a small gathering of mostly party workers. When the event started, five women were present, but after a few minutes, only two were left. Both women were associated with the party's minority wing. Speaking at the event, Jamil Siddiqui, national president of BJP's Minority Morcha, said the chaupal was organised after the successful completion of 11 years of tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Keeladi Report Not Technically Supported
Chennai: Union minister for culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday said the report on Keeladi submitted by ASI superintending archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna was not "technically well-supported" and more data was required. The Union minister was in Chennai to speak to reporters about the 11 years of achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led govt at the centre. Speaking to reporters at the BJP headquarters in the city, Shekhawat said, "The report is not technically well-supported and established yet. A lot of things are to be done before recognition and accreditation are accorded to the findings presented by the archaeologist. Let them come up with more results, more data, evidence, and proof. One finding cannot change the discourse of history." Archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna submitted a 982-page report on the first two phases of the Keeladi excavation to ASI in Jan 2023. But the ASI on May 21 asked him to correct the report to make it "more authentic". "People in positions are trying to flare up the regional sentiments, but we need to be cautious. Let the research get completed on all parameters and then let us take a call on that. This is a subject not to be decided by politicians but by archaeologists with sound technical expertise," Shekhawat said. Asked about DMK's charges that BJP was not ready to accept the ancientness of Tamil culture, Shekhawat refuted it, saying BJP accepts that Tamil is an ancient language and the PM has said this on several occasions. Meanwhile, state finance minister Thangam Thennarasu, who is also the state minister for archaeology, responded to Shekhawat, saying it is usual for BJP to find reasons to reject Tamil history. "First, they said there was nothing in Keeladi. Next, the archaeologist was transferred. Then they refused to allocate funds and finally, they shelved the report for two years. Only the reasons differ for rejecting Tamil history," Thangam said. Thangam said when researchers across the world agree that Tamils are 5,350 years old, knew technology back then, and were owners of the oldest civilization, what is preventing the BJP from accepting it?
