After visiting the Tindouf camps, Greta Thunberg becomes an advocate for Polisario online
Shortly after visiting the Tindouf Camps, earlier in January, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg has since adopted a pro-Polisario stance online.
The 22-year-old activist has made the Sahara conflict the top of her agenda, scheduling an online live Q&A today, January 17, to speak about «her fight for justice from Palestine to Western Sahara». This Q&A, expected at 8pm GMT, is organized by Zeteo, a media organization founded by American-British broadcaster and writer Mehdi Hasan.
During this Q&A, available exclusively for Zeteo's paid subscribers and hosted by Hasan, Greta will be talking about «her recent trip to refugee camps in Western Sahara», announced the platform on Friday.
Greta will also be answering questions from subscribers on the aforementioned questions during the Q&A which will be held on Zoom.
For the record, Greta visited the Tindouf CAMPS early in January, where she attended an «International Conference in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People at the Boujdour refugee camp», wrote Algerian media.
Greta has even spoken to the Algerian Press agency APS on the sidelines of said conference, expressing her «deep regret for the silence prevailing among many countries regarding the Sahrawi issue, as well as the Palestinian issue and the genocide faced by the Palestinian people».
Three days ago, she even took to Instagram accusing Morocco of «trying to use greenwashing and whitewashing to legitimize and distract from their occupation and human rights abuses in Western Sahara». She also posted photos from her visit to the Tindouf Camps, posing with the Separatist movement's head Brahim Ghali, with the caption : «the struggle for a liberated Western Sahara is everyone's struggle».
Born in Stockholm to famous parents, an actor and an Opera singer, Greta rose to fame in 2018 as the youngest climate activist after she addressed the UN Climate Change Conference (COP24).

Mauritania defends Lebriga closure amid Polisario pressure
The Mauritanian government has defended its decision, made in May, to close the Lebriga region on the border with Algeria. «This is a domestic security measure aimed at controlling crossings and securing the borders», said Houssein Ould Meddou, Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations with Parliament, and spokesperson for the Mauritanian government, in an interview with France 24 Arabic. «This decision has no political motivations and does not target any specific party. It is part of a broader, long-standing state strategy to safeguard national sovereignty», he added. Mauritania's response comes amid pressure from the Polisario Front, which has been seeking access for its armed fighters through the Lebriga zone to launch attacks on Moroccan positions east of the Sand Wall. A Polisario delegation even traveled to Nouakchott on May 30 in an attempt to persuade President Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani to reopen the zone, an effort that failed.

FAR drone strikes Polisario vehicle near Sand Wall
A Royal Armed Forces (FAR) drone struck a Polisario vehicle on Thursday, June 19. «The operation took place in the Karzaze region, near Mijek, east of the Sand Wall. The outcome of the strike remains unknown for now», a source familiar with the matter told Yabiladi. According to the same source, the Polisario elements had first crossed into Mauritanian territory clandestinely, intending to carry out an operation against Moroccan positions, before being targeted by the FAR drone. However, a Polisario-affiliated media outlet offered a different version of events, claiming the Moroccan drone targeted a «civilian vehicle» in the same area. It's worth noting that FAR drones had already targeted Polisario vehicles in Karzaze on May 29. This latest operation comes just 24 hours after Brahim Ghali presided over the graduation ceremony of a new cohort of the Front's armed militias on Wednesday.

Kenya National Assembly Speaker receives Polisario representative
Nearly a month after Kenya officially voiced support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, the Polisario's main ally in Nairobi has resurfaced. On Thursday, June 19, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, met with the Polisario's representative in Kenya. «Today, I hosted His Excellency Mohamed-Liman Ali Ami, the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, who paid me a courtesy call at my office at Parliament Buildings», Wetangula posted. «Our discussions focused on strengthening the bilateral relationship between our two nations and exploring ways to deepen diplomatic engagement for the mutual benefit of our citizens. I assured the Ambassador that Kenya, as a committed member of the African Union (AU), stands in solidarity with the Sahrawi Republic and remains steadfast in supporting and safeguarding its interests as a sovereign state», he added. Wetangula is widely seen as the Polisario's key ally within the Kenyan government. According to an October 2022 report by the South African-based Institute for Security Studies, Wetangula, a former foreign minister, played a pivotal role in convincing President William Ruto to delete a tweet posted on September 14, 2022, in which he had announced Kenya's withdrawal of recognition of the «SADR». Wetangula is a powerful political figure in Kenya. He heads the FORD-Kenya party, a member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition that backed Ruto's successful 2022 presidential bid. Just weeks after Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch met with President Ruto in Dakar on January 26, 2023, Wetangula traveled to Algeria, where he met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and reaffirmed his support for the Polisario. He reiterated this position again in November 2023, after several African political leaders signed the « Tangier Appeal » calling for the expulsion of the «SADR» from the African Union. Following a meeting with the Polisario representative in Nairobi, Wetangula stated, «I reassured him of my support, noting their membership in the AU, akin to our shared responsibility.» In contrast, during a working visit to Morocco in late May, Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi declared that «the Republic of Kenya considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach to resolving the Sahara issue and intends to collaborate with states sharing this vision to promote its implementation». Just one day after that statement, Wetangula hosted the Algerian ambassador in Nairobi.
