
Are the world's rivers dying? Robert Macfarlane looks for answers in his new book

Can you explain the concept of a river as a living being?
At the heart of the book is the idea that rivers have lives, deaths –– and even rights. It asks readers to imagine rivers in these terms, and to see what consequences flow from that re-imagining. The book is a journey into the history, futures, places and possibilities of this ancient, urgent idea.
I know that the notion of a river as 'alive' is a searching, confronting one, especially to those of us raised in the traditions of rationalism. It strikes at the anthropocentric core of many of our assumptions. But if you find it hard to imagine a river as alive, try imagining a dead or dying river. We know what this looks like, what it feels like: fish floating belly-up, channels choked with sewage and garbage, a river disappearing in its own dry bed. Unfortunately, many rivers in the world are dying. In England and Wales, in fact, right now we haven't got a single river in 'good overall ecological health'. This is a failure of imagination as well as legislation.
To think of a river as alive is to begin to open new ways of relating to rivers; new ways to imagine freshwater otherwise. And God knows we need such new thinking: our rivers have become first undrinkable, then unswimmable, then untouchable. How did it come to this –– and where do we go from here?
What are the three rivers you visited for this book and why?
I wanted to give the book the form of water –– of the water cycle, in fact. So, it begins and ends at the little chalk stream spring near my house, and in between it moves from the mountains to the sea, flowing downhill and gathering force, as a river does, before returning to its source. Over its course, the language itself becomes more and more liquid, as the book –– and I –– become 'rivered'.
I made three substantial journeys/fieldwork trips in the course of writing the book (which has taken five years from beginning to publication). The first was to an Ecuadorian cloud forest named Los Cedros, the 'Forest of the Cedars', home to the headwaters of the Río Los Cedros, the 'River of the Cedars'. The second was to the wounded creeks, lagoons and estuaries of the watery city of Chennai in southeast India. And the third was to the wild interior of Nitassinan, the homeland of the Innu people (also known as Quebec), through which runs the Mutehekau Shipu (also known as the Magpie River), which I followed south for 100 miles from deep in the boreal forest to make sea-fall at the Gulf of St Lawrence, several hundred miles northeast of Montreal.
Each of these rivers has become a focus for revolutionary thinking about what the philosopher Michel Serres called 'the natural contract'. Each is a place where rivers are understood in some fundamental way to be alive –– and in each place, too, the survival of rivers is under severe threat: in Ecuador from mining, in India from pollution and in Nitassinan from dams. Did a particular river inspire the idea for the book?
Yes –– a tiny, fragile chalk stream, which rises as a clear-watered spring just a mile from my house, in a little spinney called Nine Wells Wood. I visit it several times a week and have done for more than 15 years: it's a place where a river is born. Spring sites are, I think, the most purely magical of landscape places: self-renewing miracles. This chalk stream is my timekeeper, my memory-keeper. But it's also desperately fragile: it's currently on life support (in the form of an augmentation pump) to keep it flowing, and it simply may not survive past 2050 if the current trajectories of climate change, pollution and abstraction continue uncheked.
If rivers are alive, what might they be saying?
Rivers are our oldest singers, our oldest storytellers. But we'll never 'speak river', because their language is incommensurable with ours. Rivers are, though, hugely powerful presences with which we can think and with which we can speak and tell stories. Early in Is A River Alive?, I openly name the rivers as my co-authors: I simply couldn't have written the book without them. I did much of my thinking of the book either on or by rivers, which could never have been done in a library or at home. Rivers shaped countless aspects of the book, from the geography of its overall shape (from spring to mountain summit to river mouth at the sea and back to the springs), which was based on the water cycle. This question reminds me of a beautiful story by an Indian river-rights activist called Shrishtee Bajpai, about a young Ladakhi girl living on the banks of the Indus who, when asked what rights her river has, said: 'The river has a right to sing!' It was at once a lyrical and an ecological observation: when the river is in good flow, it burbles over –– it sings. If it's low and dry and sluggish, it's silenced. We need our rivers to sing! Archaeologists may have finally solved the mystery of Roanoke's ‘Lost Colony'
A team of researchers believes they may have cracked one of America's most enduring legends: Where did the settlers of the Roanoke Colony go? The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was the first permanent English settlement in the United States. A group of over 100 colonists settled on North Carolina's Roanoke Island in 1587, led by Sir Walter Raleigh. John White, the governor of the colony, returned to England for supplies in 1587. When he came back to Roanoke Island in August 1590, he found the settlement mysteriously abandoned – and all the colonists, including his daughter Eleanor Dare and his granddaughter Virginia Dare, gone. One of the only clues remaining at the site was the word 'CROATOAN' carved into a palisade. It either referred to Croatoan Island, which is now called Hatteras Island, or the Croatoan Indians. The mystery has haunted Americans and Brits for the past four centuries, with several investigations launched into the matter. Whether the colonists were killed by Native Americans, starved to death, or left for greener pastures has eluded historians. But new research suggests the colonists' fate may not have been tragic after all. Mark Horton, an archaeology professor at the Royal Agricultural University in England, spoke with Fox News Digital about his findings. 5 A team of researchers believes they may have cracked one of America's most enduring legends: Where did the settlers of the Roanoke Colony go? Getty Images For the past decade, the British researcher has worked with the Croatoan Archaeological Society's Scott Dawson to uncover the mystery. Horton said they've uncovered proof that the colonists assimilated into Croatoan society, thanks to a trash heap. 'We're looking at the middens — that's the rubbish heaps — of the Native Americans living on Hatteras Island, because we deduced that they would have very rapidly been assimilated into the Native American population,' Horton said. The smoking gun at the site? 5 The mystery has haunted Americans and Brits for the past four centuries, with several investigations launched into the matter. Horton said it's definitive proof of iron-working on Hatteras Island, which could have only been done by English colonists. 'The key significance of hammerscale … is that it's evidence of iron-working, of forging, at that moment,' he said. 'Hammerscale is what comes off a blacksmith's forge.' Check out more newsletters Horton added, 'This is metal that has to be raised to a relatively high temperature … which, of course, [requires] technology that Native Americans at this period did not have.' Hammerscale shows that the English 'must have been working' in this Native American community, according to the expert. But what if the hammerscale came longer after the Roanoke Colony was abandoned? Horton said that's unlikely. 'We found it stratified … underneath layers that we know date to the late 16th or early 17th century,' he said. At the site, archaeologists also found guns, nautical fittings, small cannonballs, an engraved slate and a stylus, in addition to wine glasses and beads, which all paint a vivid picture of life on Hatteras Island in the 17th century. When asked if the colonists could have been killed in a later war, Horton said they survived among the Croatoans and successfully assimilated. 'We have one little snippet of historical evidence from the 1700s, which describes people with blue or gray eyes who could remember people who used to be able to read from books,' he said. 'Also, they said there was this ghost ship that was sent out by a man called Raleigh.' 5 When asked if the colonists could have been killed in a later war, Horton said they survived among the Croatoans and successfully assimilated. When asked if he's officially solved the mystery, Horton said that though the archaeological evidence is definitive, the legend will probably still endure. 'Have we solved the mystery? Well, you know, it's pretty good evidence, but there's always more work to be done,' he said. Horton added, 'And people love mysteries. They hate resolving things one way or the other. So I'm sure that the mystery will continue, you know, whatever the scientific evidence says.'

How and When You Can See June's Spectacular Strawberry Moon

Credit - Gary Hershorn—Getty Images An upcoming lunar event is sure to catch the attention of avid sky-watchers. In June, the Strawberry Moon will make an appearance. Known for its unique amber hues and, at certain glances, rosy glow, the Strawberry Moon is thought of as the final full moon of the spring or the first full moon of the summer. It's the 6th of 12 full moons in 2025. In short, it's something you won't want to miss. In rare moments, the Strawberry Moon can occur at the same time as the summer solstice. This was the case in 2016, when Astronaut Jeff Williams of NASA captured the 'spectacular rise' of the full moon from the International Space Station. In 2023, the Strawberry Moon shone over New York City's Statue of Liberty landmark, resulting in striking photos taken in the early hours of the morning. Here's how and when you can see the celestial event in 2025: The name Strawberry Moon comes from the fact that the month of June is when the harvesting of strawberries occurs, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Moons often get their name from the season, like how May's Flower Moon references spring's abundance of blossoms. According to Western Washington University, the Strawberry Moon moniker was used by several Indigenous tribes. Other Native American tribes have called the lunar spectacular the Hot Moon and the Blooming Moon, to commemorate the spring season, and the Hatching Moon or Birth Moon to commemorate new life. Outside of North America, Europeans have in the past dubbed it the Rose Moon or even the Honey Moon, as June is typically the first honey harvest of the year. ET, though the best time to view the moon will be as it rises on June 10 at dusk in the Southeast of the U.S., when the moon casts a warm, amber hue across the sky. The moon rising occurs at different times depending on location. In New York, for example, the best time to view the lunar event will be at 8:30 p.m. in New York, and around 8:00 p.m. in Los Angeles. The red supergiant star Antares will be visible in the night sky on June 10 or 11. Australians and New Zealanders, along with those in the South Pacific, will be able to watch the moon occult—or block—Antares. Antares is the brightest star in the Scorpius constellation, and its lunar occultation will occur at twilight for those in the western part of the South Pacific, and in the eastern part of the region it will occur later in the evening, around 7:00 p.m. local time. Ideal locations include someplace with an uncompromised view of the eastern horizon June's Strawberry Moon is also the lowest-hanging full moon of the year as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. According to EarthSky, this Strawberry Moon is the lowest full moon since 2006, due to the major lunar standstill. This phenomenon, which occurs every 18.6 years, causes the moonrise and moonset to occur at the most extreme north and southernmost points. Best practices for viewing the moon with a bare eye is to give yourself "plenty of time for your eyes to adjust and look carefully," according to NASA. But the full moon can be seen with even more specificity via binoculars or a small telescope, which allow viewers to observe many different features of the moon, including its mountain ridges and where it has been marked by impacts from other celestial objects.
