Five Former Sabres Face Off In The Stanley Cup Final
The National Hockey League has reached the Stanley Cup Final with five former Buffalo Sabres on the rosters of the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers and the two-time Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers. The opening game on Wednesday saw four of the five players in action, as the most recent ex-Sabre Jeff Skinner, was a healthy scratch with the return of Connor Brown to the lineup.

'Is a Canadian team even allowed to win me anymore?' The imagined thoughts of the Stanley Cup
This week saw the beginning of the Stanley Cup finals, which sees the Edmonton Oilers in contention to potentially become the first Canadian team since 1993 to win the NHL championship trophy. In Dear Diary, the National Post satirically re-imagines a week in the life of a newsmaker. This week, Tristin Hopper takes a journey inside the thoughts of the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Or, as its more commonly known, the Stanley Cup. Life comes at you fast. One minute you're a donated silver cup being fought over by toothless Canadian amateurs fresh from a shift at the dockyards. The next, you're a heavily trademarked corporate laurel that spends most of its time around American millionaires. I've been to the White House so often I've got my own Secret Service code name. I've been filled with hot wings and Kristall liqueur more times than I can count. There are times I catch myself spelling 'colour' without the 'u.' I stared in the mirror for several minutes at the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup inscription on my bowl. How often do I forget it's even there. I'll be frank; I didn't know Canadian teams were still technically able to win me. I figured Canada had lost a war or something, and as a condition of the surrender they had to forsake access to their most treasured cultural object. That's how these things usually go, right? That's why the Mona Lisa, an Italian cultural treasure, is in France. It's why Egypt's Rosetta Stone is in the U.K. So to learn that the Oilers merely have to win some hockey games to get me back is quite surprising. I thought my return to Canadian soil could come only at the conclusion of some devastating internecine conflagration. People ask me if I still keep in touch with the other Governor General sports trophies: the Grey Cup, the Minto Cup, the Jeanne Sauvé Ringette Cup. The answer is, no. The last I heard from any of them was when the Roland Michener Tuna Fishing Trophy tried to borrow money. Do I think I'm better than them? Yes. As much as I respect the emerging sport of Dragon Boat racing, I would controversially contend that the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Dragon Boating Cup doesn't inspire the heart of young athletes in quite the same way as I do. Nevertheless, there are still times I think wistfully of the simple yet satisfying life of the Grey Cup. Does Tom Cruise envy his humble siblings who never left upstate New York? I would remind people that I continue to spend a disproportionate amount of time with Canadians. It's just that these particular Canadians live in the United States, work for U.S. companies, are paid in U.S. dollars and have married Americans (blondes, mostly). Is it not fitting that these ambiguous Canadians should be rewarded with me, the very icon of shifting and ambiguous identity. How much of me is really the 'original' Stanley Cup. At what point, when so many of my parts have been stripped off and moved to a museum somewhere, do I cease being what I once was? Do I fear what would occur were I to once again be in the possession of a Canadian team? I have so often been in the hands of cities who were immune to my powers. Where the Stanley Cup parade has been little more than an ill-attended circling of the arena parking lot. What happens when this spell is broken? Like any major trophy, I know I hold immense power and influence. Cities have burned on my account. Fortunes have been lost. Tears have been shed. TVs punched. A people has been bound in the darkness for a generation. What happens when they see light for the first time? The Michigan football team is hoping to land a commitment from one its top offensive targets, and it won't be long before we hear a decision. Five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell is down to eight schools, and he will announce his commitment on July 5th. Advertisement 'BREAKING: Elite 2026 WR Calvin Russell will announce his Commitment July 5th between these 8 Schools, he tells me for @On3Recruits,' Hayes Fawcett said in a post. 'The 6'5 195 WR from Opa Locka, FL is ranked as the No. 4 WR in the '26 Class (per On3 Industry).' Calvin Russell will choose between Michigan, Miami, Oregon, Florida State, Florida, LSU, North Carolina and Syracuse. Russell is a five-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He is the #21 player in the 2026 class, the #3 WR and the #2 player in the state of Florida. Russell currently attends Northwestern High School in Miami, FL. The Hurricanes will be a tough team for Michigan to beat here. 'Hulking wide receiver with above-the-rim athleticism that makes him a uniquely dangerous target, especially down in the red zone,' Russell's scouting report reads. 'Owns more of a slender build, but has measured over 6-foot-5 multiple times and is blessed with a near 6-foot-10 wingspan. Isn't exactly the most polished route runner at this stage, but creates separation with unexpected suddenness for such a longer strider. Superb body control tends to create even more of a disadvantage for defensive backs as he wins 50-50 battles with timing and positioning.' Advertisement If Michigan does land a commitment from Russell, there is a chance that he plays basketball for the Wolverines as well. 'Not going to outrun every tackle, but is quick to hit the gas and can make some dynamic cuts in traffic,' the scouting report continues. 'Spent much of freshman and sophomore seasons repping as a run first-quarterback out of necessity before settling in as a must-look option in Year 3 for a storied Miami Northwestern program that captured a 3A championship. Will need to add some body armour to a rather wiry frame in hopes of improving play strength and buy into the process at the school of his choice, but should be viewed as a potential impact pass catcher for a College Football Playoff contender that can be positioned all around the field in hopes of creating mismatches. One of those good-at-everything athletes that could legitimately play two spots in college as he's also being recruited by basketball high majors.' Calvin Russell is one of the best WRs in the 2026 class, and the Michigan football team needs WRs. This would be a massive get.

Four-star safety Charles Woodson Jr. announced that he has been offered by Michigan. Woodson Jr. is the son of Michigan legend Charles Woodson, who played for the Wolverines from 1995-1997. Woodson helped lead Michigan to a national championship in 1997, and he won the Heisman Trophy that season as well. Woodson Jr. currently attends Lake Nona High School in Orlando, FL. Because of the family history with the Michigan football program, it seems like the Wolverines probably have a good shot at eventually landing a commitment here. After Charles Woodson finished up his Michigan career, he was drafted fourth overall in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Woodson ended up playing in the NFL for 17 years, and he also spent a good amount of time playing with the Green Bay Packers. Advertisement During his NFL career, Woodson went to nine Pro Bowls, he was a four-time First-Team All-Pro, he won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1998 and NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, and Woodson is a Super Bowl champion. He had a sensational career. Woodson is now in the Hall of Fame. Charles Woodson is one of the most storied Michigan football players of all time. He accomplished a ton with the program during his college days, and then he went on to have a sensational professional career as well. He is one of the best players to ever wear the winged helmet. Now, Charles Woodson Jr. is nearing his college football career. He has a lot of work to do to become as good as his dad, but he seems to be on his way to a special career as well. After the success that Woodson had at Michigan, the Wolverines would be thrilled to welcome another member of the family to the program.
