Moving into the starting lineup, Jaydon Watts scores for Crete-Monee. But there's more. ‘That isn't everything.'
As the youngest of five basketball-playing brothers, Crete-Monee's Jaydon Watts has a chip on his shoulder. It comes from years of being the little guy getting beat up on the court.
It all made Watts, a senior guard, even stronger. And he sure learned a lot.
'I'm always battling and I'm always fighting because I'm used to doing that,' Watts said. 'You've just got to live and learn. From my brothers, I learned how to be a leader, how to do the right thing and be a better person.'
Watts' leadership has been vital for the Warriors. He often comes off the bench as the team's sixth man, but he got the start Wednesday night and scored 11 points to spark Crete-Monee to a 77-38 win over Evergreen Park in a Class 3A Hillcrest Regional semifinal in Country Club Hills.
Watts added eight rebounds and Jaylen Blakes scored 21 points to lead the fifth-seeded Warriors (19-12). Zyheir Gardner and Jayden Preston added nine points apiece, while Uriel Chapman chipped in with six.
Crete-Monee will take on fourth-seeded Hillcrest (20-10), which beat Oak Forest 63-50, at 6 p.m. Friday in the regional final.
Lenear Bolden scored 12 points, Keshaun Vaval added 11 points and Camryn Dandridge finished with eight points and 10 rebounds for 12th-seeded Evergreen Park (14-17).
All of Jaydon's brothers, including Enos, Nick and Emmanuel along with Joel, graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor, although Joel started his career at St. Rita.
'It was just meant to be for me,' Jaydon said of ending up at Crete-Monee. 'I watched all my brothers play at H-F and I started playing basketball when I was 3 years old.
'My parents just put the ball in my hand and I had to figure out what to do with it.'
Watts, meanwhile, wasn't the only member of his family playing in the postseason Wednesday.
Joel, the second-youngest of the Watts brothers, scored 11 points for Concordia Chicago in an 82-68 loss to Concordia Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament game.
Jaydon is hoping to follow Joel's path to college basketball, but his high school journey has been different.
On Wednesday night, Watts scored eight quick points in the first quarter. It was the kind of spark he typically provides off the bench and was exactly what Crete-Monee coach Jawan Nelson was looking for.
'Jaydon is one of our best scorers,' Nelson said. 'That's why I've been having him come off the bench, but I had to start him this game because we've been struggling getting those points.
'We scored the most points we've scored all year and he was a big part of it.'
Watts, though, has been focused on doing more to help his team than just make 3-pointers. His eight rebounds were a major source of pride.
'It's senior year,' Watts said. 'Shooting and scoring the ball, that isn't everything. We all have to contribute across the court.'
Blakes, who transferred to Crete-Monee from T.F. North, has spent just one season with Watts. But he has certainly felt his impact.
'I've seen Watts grow a lot as more than a basketball player,' Blakes said. 'I've seen him grow as a person, as a captain and especially as a team leader. He's a person that we really lean on.'
Up 36-24 at halftime, the Warriors dominated the second half, holding Evergreen Park to 14 points, including just three in the fourth quarter.
Now, they get their rematch with Hillcrest, which beat Crete-Monee 55-50 in a Big Dipper quarterfinal on Dec. 27.
Watts is ready. And he's hungrier than ever.
'You have to get uncomfortable with your weaknesses,' Watts said. 'That's always going to help you get better in the long run. I felt like my weakness in the past was just the want to win.
'I feel like I've really got that now.'

Warriors Announce Surprise 2nd Surgery for Brandin Podziemski
Warriors Announce Surprise 2nd Surgery for Brandin Podziemski originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golden State Warriors second-year shooting guard Brandin Podziemski had a banged up wrist that required surgery following the team's playoff exit in the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Advertisement However, he apparently battled another issue down the team's stretch run that required a second surgery, which the franchise didn't make public until Wednesday, June 11. "Warriors announce that Brandin Podziemski underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury," Tim Kawakami wrote on X. "That's in addition to his wrist surgery last month. Still expected to be ready for the start of training camp -- but whew, this is getting to be a lot." Podziemski, a first-round pick in 2023 (No. 19 overall), played in 64 games and started 33 of them during the regular season. He averaged 11.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals across 26.8 minutes of court time per night. Advertisement His playoff numbers against the Rockets were slightly down from his regular-season efforts, while Podziemski's statistics against the Timberwolves in round two slightly exceeded what he produced during the year -- perhaps due, at least in part, to the absence of Stephen Curry from the final four contests of the five-game series due to a hamstring injury. Podziemski was clearly dealing with both the wrist and core muscle issues during the second round, if not before then, which speaks to his toughness. However, the 22-year-old is going to be an important variable to the Warriors' championship equation in 2025-26, and his injuries complicate that. Either Podziemski will be a starter and/or major rotation contributor for the Warriors throughout the campaign, or he will be one of the young centerpieces to a blockbuster trade to potentially add another star alongside Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. Regardless, Podziemski's injuries are certain to be of significant concern to the franchise as it enters a summer in which league insiders expect the team to be aggressively active in both the trade and free-agent markets. Warriors Make Major Brandin Podziemski Announcement on Wednesday
Warriors Make Major Brandin Podziemski Announcement on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was a successful season for the Golden State Warriors as they were able to turn things around after their early struggles and advance to the second round of the playoffs. Advertisement Of course, the addition of Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline to pair alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green was a major factor in Golden State's turnaround as he made them into a contender. Now the Warriors enter the offseason looking to build around their veteran trio to chase a championship next season. While Butler and Curry shared most of the spotlight for the Warriors heading into next season, Golden State has also done a great job developing some of their young talent including both Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski. © Troy Taormina-Imagn Images For Podziemski, he put together a career-best season in his second year in the NBA as he fit well next to Curry in the backcourt and he has proved that he is going to be one of the franchise's key young players for their future. Advertisement On Wednesday, the Warriors made a major announcement regarding Podziemski. Golden State announced that Podziemski underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a core muscle injury and that he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. This was a surprising announcement by the Warriors, especially after the 22-year-old guard had already underwent successful left wrist debridement surgery on May 27. The good news for Golden State is that Podziemski is expected to be ready for training camp, which will be crucial for him as he will likely be their starting shooting guard next season. Advertisement Golden State now hopes that he will come back even better next season as he should be a key piece to their chase for another championship. Golden State Warriors Are Leaning One Way on Kevin Durant Trade Idea
Golden State Warriors Are Leaning One Way on Kevin Durant Trade Idea originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors suffered a disappointing end to their season when they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals. Their hopes of advancing took a significant hit in Game 1 when Stephen Curry left with a hamstring injury. Advertisement As a result, Curry missed the next four games. There were hopes that he would've returned if the series had gone to six games, but the Timberwolves won the remaining four games to advance before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Golden State Warriors are leaning this way on Kevin Durant trade The Warriors now head into the offseason looking to make changes to give them one more chance at an NBA Finals run next season. There have been many names circulating in the rumor mill as to who the Warriors could look to add, with one suggestion being a reunion with Kevin Durant. Durant won a pair of NBA Championships and NBA Finals MVPs with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018. There were rumors that the two sides could've reunited at the trade deadline, but Durant urged the Phoenix Suns not to do the trade. Advertisement However, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, there have been no discussions to date regarding a reunion. Any team that could acquire Durant's services would instantly be better, but the Warriors might have other positions as a priority this offseason. Both the Houston Rockets and the Minnesota Timberwolves threw lineups at the Warriors that featured two big men. That caused problems for the Warriors, as Draymond Green often serves as the team's primary big man. Rookie Quentin Post showed promise this season, but just wasn't ready for the moment. While the likelihood of Durant going back to the Warriors doesn't have any rumblings now, it's a long offseason, and things could change at the drop of a hat.
