Stormy weather could soak Charlotte's Lovin' Life Music Festival weekend
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Folks heading to Uptown this weekend might want to pack their ponchos and rain boots along with their dancing shoes, as wet weather and possible storms are set to dampen the second annual Lovin' Life Music Festival.
The Queen City is in for a classic case of springtime whiplash. Toasty summer-like temperatures are dominating the forecast for the next couple of days, with highs soaring near 90 degrees on both Wednesday and Thursday. But that heat is just the warm-up act.

A cold front pushing through the Carolinas this weekend is expected to bring widespread rain and scattered storms beginning Saturday, turning what was expected to be a high-energy outdoor celebration into a weather-watching event.
Showers could linger into Sunday before conditions finally start to clear later in the day.
By next week, temperatures will cool significantly, dropping to the more seasonable mid-70s, offering some relief after the muggy, stormy weekend.

Despite the soggy forecast, Charlotte city leaders and public safety officials say they're ready. With more than 80,000 people expected to attend the three-day festival in Uptown's First Ward, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has restricted officer vacation time to ensure full coverage, not just for Lovin' Life, but also for Kendrick Lamar's concert at Bank of America Stadium and two Charlotte Knights games.
Road closures in the First Ward began Tuesday night, affecting 7th and 8th Streets between Brevard and Caldwell. CMPD promises a strong presence in the area to manage traffic and keep the weekend flowing as smoothly as possible, rain or shine.Meanwhile, organizers remain optimistic, saying they've applied lessons learned from the inaugural festival, especially around crowd and traffic management.
'Events like Lovin' Life are a gateway,' said Steve Bagwell, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. 'A way for people to discover the Queen City, to fall in love with its vibe, its food, its people, and its neighborhoods. They may come for the music, but they leave with a new favorite brunch spot, or a great local coffee shop, or plans to come back with friends and family.'

To make it easier for attendees to navigate the city during the busy weekend, CATS is offering discounted light rail and express bus passes for festivalgoers.
Rain or not, the show will go on in Charlotte, with a little extra splash.

North Carolina leaders urge preparedness for hurricane season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — North Carolina Leaders say now is the time to prepare for hurricane season. Emergency management officials say more than a dozen named storms will hit the US this season. Several are expected to become powerful, dangerous hurricanes. During a press conference on Thursday, Governor Josh Stein said North Carolinians should have an emergency kit ready, including important documents and three to five days' worth of food and water. State Emergency Manager Director William Ray said forecasters expect at least a dozen powerful storms to make landfall the next few months, six to ten of those storms could become hurricanes. 'The state emergency response team is hosting workshops, planning sessions, conducting plan reviews, conducting operation and logistics and readiness checks,' Ray added. Over at Duke Energy, Hurricane Helene is still fresh on the mind of staff at their power distribution control center in Charlotte. 'We've never experienced something like that,' said operator Laura Weigel. Company executives told Queen City News they took what they saw during Helene and applied it to trainings they run every year. 'We also practice ahead of storm season, doing storm drills, preparing operators for a variety of scenarios they might encounter. You know, every kind of scenario, including even a facility not working,' said Duke Energy spokesperson Jeff Brooks. Brooks echoed Stein's message, saying everyone should have a plan in place. Sinkhole shuts down part of W. Morehead Street in Charlotte: What to know
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A sinkhole has forced a road closure on a well-traveled stretch of W. Morehead Street in Charlotte. The problem popped up near the intersection of W. Morehead Street and Suttle Avenue, just west of Uptown. Because of the damage, crews have shut down W. Will the northern lights be visible across the Carolinas tonight?
CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — There was a significant solar flare that took place Friday evening, which could allow for a geomagnetic storm to impact the Earth! A G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for Sunday night into Monday. As these coronal mass ejections get closer to Earth, that can sometimes allow the aurora borealis or northern lights to become visible. With recent G4 geomagnetic storms, the northern lights have been visible as far south as Northern Alabama and Northern California. That means there is a legit chance we could see the northern lights across the Carolinas late Sunday night into early Monday. There is also something called the Kp index. Whenever that is projected to be between levels 7-8, the Carolinas can tend to get a good viewing of the northern lights. Tonight's projection of the Kp index from NOAA is around 7.5 to 7.6. As always with these situations, there is a lot of uncertainty here and the viewing of the beautiful aurora borealis is not completely guaranteed! But it is worth a shot to at least try to view them. You obviously want to look north, but you want to try to be away from very little light pollution as well. With recent geomagnetic storms, using your camera on your phone can also be a good way to try and view them. The best chance of the viewing will be late Sunday night into early Monday. Peak viewing looks to be between the hours of 11 p.m. Sunday night and 2 a.m. Monday morning. Clouds will hopefully clear out enough following a few storms this evening. Good luck!
