Last Updated:
Manu Bhaker and Chain Singh reached the finals of their respective events but missed podium finishes at the ISSF World Cup.
Paris Olympics medallist Manu Bhaker and seasoned shooter Chain Singh both reached the finals of their respective events but missed out on podium finishes, resulting in a medal-less day for India at the ISSF World Cup on Wednesday.
Double Olympic bronze medallist Bhaker secured sixth place in the 25m pistol event after qualifying for the eight-shooter final in fifth position with a combined 'precision' and 'rapid fire' score of 588.
Chain Singh advanced to the final of the men's 50m rifle 3-position event following an impressive qualification round score, but finished seventh in the eight-shooter medal round.
On the opening day of the competition, India earned a bronze medal through Elavenil Valarivan in the women's 10m air rifle event.
Bhaker scored 290 in precision and an excellent 298 in the rapid fire round, totalling 588 going into the finals. However, the medal round did not go as planned. The winner of the Olympic bronze medals in the women's and mixed team 10m air pistol events was outperformed by Chinese and Korean shooters.
China's Sun Yujie won the gold with a score of 38, while Korea's Oh Yejin and Yang Jiin claimed silver and bronze with scores of 36 and 32, respectively. Bhaker was eliminated in the third round, finishing with 20 points.
Multiple Asian Games medallist Esha Singh finished 11th with a combined score of 585 and did not advance to the eight-shooter final. Another Indian competitor, Simranpreet Kaur Brar, accumulated 577 points to finish 32nd.
Chain Singh shot 198 in 'kneeling' and 199 in 'prone', but a subpar 195 in 'standing' resulted in a total of 592, placing him sixth in the final. In the high-quality final, Chain Singh was the second competitor to be eliminated, finishing seventh. Norway's Jon-Hermann Hegg won the gold with a score of 464.1, while Individual Neutral Athlete Ilia Marsov took silver with 462, and the Czech Republic's Jiri Privratsky claimed bronze with 452.
On Thursday, Olympians Arjun Babuta and Sandeep Singh will compete in the men's 10m air pistol event against Paris Games gold medallist Sheng Lihao. Babuta has reached four consecutive finals since the Paris Olympics last year, where he finished fourth, and his rivalry with Sheng will be closely watched.
Sheng started the 2025 season with a gold medal at the Lima World Cup, where Babuta finished just 0.1 point behind, securing silver. Sandeep Singh, who won the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze with Bhaker at the Paris Games, has also rejoined the team.
In the women's 50m rifle 3-Position, all three Indian competitors are in good form. Sift Kaur Samra won gold at the World Cup in Argentina, while Shriyanka Sadangi reached the final at the World Cup in Lima. The third Indian, Ashi Chouksey, also performed well in Lima but narrowly missed the final cut.

Christian Pulisic Defends Skipping CONCACAF Gold Cup; Calls Out Unfair Criticism
Last Updated: Christian Pulisic defended skipping the CONCACAF Gold Cup for rest after a long AC Milan season, criticizing former players like Landon Donovan for questioning his commitment. USA winger Christian Pulisic has defended his decision to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup, asserting that those questioning his commitment to the national team were 'way out of line". Pulisic, who played 50 games for AC Milan in the recently concluded season, stated that taking time to rest and recover was the best decision for both himself and the team, especially with the World Cup coming to the U.S., Mexico, and Canada next year. According to USA Today, Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson are also skipping the Gold Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 6, despite not being injured. Former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas were among those criticising players who opted out of the tournament, and their comments did not sit well with Pulisic. Christian Pulisic reveals that he DID want to be with the USMNT for the two friendlies against Türkiye and Switzerland — but said the federation wanted commitment for the entire summer through the Gold Cup. — USMNT Only (@usmntonly) June 12, 2025 'It's tough because I looked up to those guys growing up; some of these guys were my idols, and I respect them so much as players," the 26-year-old said on the CBS Sports podcast on Thursday. 'It's difficult, especially when some of them privately express support and friendship, then say something different publicly. 'You can discuss my performances, but to question my commitment to the national team, in my opinion, that's way out of line." Jarkhar, mecca of rural sports, keeps torch burning
Ludhiana: As the 15th Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Championship concluded at Jarkhar on June 8, the passion for sports in the village was palpable, showing how far it has come as a 'mecca of rural sports'. Jarkhar lies about 15km from the city, on Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. Jarkhar Sports Festival and other tournaments held in the village have become the most anticipated events here. No wonder, they are often referred to as 'modern rural mini Olympics'. Since its inception in 1986, this vibrant festival has grown from a modest local event into a cornerstone of rural sports and cultural celebration, fostering community spirit, sportsmanship, and the preservation of traditional games. Held at the state-of-the-art Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Complex, the festival attracts participants and spectators, blending athletic prowess with Punjabi cultural vibrancy. The festival's history traces back to a small playground and a budget of just Rs 1,200 initiated by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports and Charitable Trust. Over nearly four decades, it has evolved into a spectacle, drawing athletes from neighbouring villages, districts, and even international teams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A pivotal moment in the festival's history came with the establishment of the Jarkhar Hockey Academy in April 2006, spearheaded by chief organiser Jagroop Singh Jarkhar. The event's growth is reflected in its modern venue, over Rs 6 crore stadium equipped with floodlights, a blue astroturf surface, and facilities including a hostel, 34 rooms, facility to host multiple sports simultaneously. These include hockey, kabaddi, wrestling, football, basketball, handball, volleyball, and athletics. Jarkhar said, "At present, about 120 aspiring hockey players are being coached and 30 to 40 players are staying in the hostel. The focus remains on hockey, but a boxing academy was also started in 2021." The festival's impact extends beyond athletics, serving as a cultural hub that celebrates Punjab's rich heritage. The academy has become a beacon of opportunity for underprivileged youth. Jarkhar said several academy players have participated in various-level competitions, securing stable employment, highlighting the role of the festival and the academy in transforming lives through sports. "Over 400 players from the academy have already played at the national level and have secured jobs in various departments including Punjab Police, the Railways, etc under the sports quota. More than 50 players are playing in different leagues abroad and nearly 100 players are making a living from the sport," he added. Jarkhar said, "Of the Rs 6-7 crore invested in the complex, only Rs 20-30 lakh has come from the govt. We could manage the rest because of the strong community support." He added, "We have dedicated our lives to it, Nowhere in Punjab will you find such infrastructure. This is the first stadium in the state to have floodlights, that too in rural areas, and they are lit every evening when players play and practice. It has a hostel, 34 rooms, bus service, boarding lodging, and food facilities." The academy is also recognised by Hockey India . Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
