PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The HBCU community is mourning the loss of Prairie View A&M University football player Jackson Bailey, also known as 'Jacks', who died at the age of 22. Though he did not appear in a game for the Panthers, his presence was deeply felt within the locker room and across the campus community, according to a statement released by the university's athletic department. Bailey, a defensive lineman, joined the Prairie View A&M University football team for the 2023–24 season after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe. He began his collegiate career at Arizona, where he redshirted. Originally from DeSoto, Texas, Bailey starred at Red Oak High School and earned all-state honors in Class 5A Division I as a senior. In his standout 2020 season, he posted 64 tackles, four interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and three fumble recoveries. Bailey chose Prairie View A&M, the only HBCU he attended, to be closer to his family. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter. Jackson Bailey was known for his brotherhood, positive energy, and deep sense of purpose. His football IQ, natural speed, and infectious personality earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike. His favorite quote, "God got me," reflected a mindset that carried him through both life's challenges and triumphs. He dreamed of playing in the NFL or pursuing a career in physical therapy to help others heal through sports. Off the field, Bailey had a passion for cooking, music, and spending time with family, especially during the holidays. He also enjoyed playing video games and the piano, a lesser-known talent. Bailey often credited his mother, Debbie Bailey, as his greatest inspiration. He is also survived by his father, Bryon, and siblings Taylor and Kebron. "Though his time at PVAMU was brief, the impact he made will resonate for years to come," the university said. "We honor and remember Jackson 'Jacks' Bailey not only for his potential and promise but for the way he lived-with purpose, humor, humility, and heart." HBCU championship coach finds new program
HBCU women's basketball is gaining another veteran leader. Virginia Union University has named Alico Dunk as the 10th head coach in the history of its program. Dunk, a longtime presence in HBCU athletics, replaces Tierra Terry, who took the Winston-Salem State job in April. The university will introduce Dunk at a press conference on Friday, June 13, at 12:00 p.m. The event will be held at Barco-Stevens Hall on Virginia Union's campus in Richmond, Virginia. Dunk brings more than 20 years of coaching experience at HBCUs. He most recently spent eight seasons as the head coach at Stillman College. In 2025, he led the Lady Tigers to a 26-6 record, the best in school history. That season included an HBCU Athletic Conference regular-season title and the school's first win in the NAIA National Tournament. Dunk won 112 games at Stillman-more than any women's coach there in the past 40 years. Before that, he coached the women's team at Elizabeth City State University. Over five seasons, he led the Lady Vikings to an 83-56 record. They won two CIAA Northern Division titles during his tenure. In 2013, he was named CIAA Coach of the Year after a 24-4 season and a 15-1 mark in league play. Dunk also coached the ECSU men's team and served as an assistant during their 2007 CIAA Championship run. A native of Ayden, North Carolina, Dunk was a standout in football and basketball at Ayden-Grifton High School. He began his college career at Tennessee, then transferred to East Carolina University. He was a two-year captain at ECU and earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 1999. After graduation, he taught and coached high school basketball before playing professionally in Asia. HBCU swim program adds record breaking talent to roster
Amira Washington, a standout sprinter from New Jersey, has committed to joining the Howard University Bison swimming program for the 2026–27 season. Her decision strengthens the only HBCU with a Division I swim team and adds to the program's growing national profile. Washington is currently a senior at Red Bank Regional High School. She also trains with the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. Her primary events include the 50 and 100 freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke. These are key sprint disciplines that align well with Howard's competitive strengths. At the 2025 YMCA Short Course Nationals, she set a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle. In 2024, she competed at the YMCA Long Course Nationals, recording times of 28.20 in the 50-meter free, 1:01.41 in the 100 free, and 28.77 in the 50 fly. She reached the A-finals in both the 50 fly and 50 back. Her high school performances have also stood out. In January 2025, she won the 100 back and placed second in the 100 fly at the Shore Conference Tournament. Both races shattered her own personal best and reset school records that already had her name on them. This consistency across high-level meets makes her one of the top HBCU swim commits in her class. "I am beyond blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Howard University! I would like to thank God along with all my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through this journey and making my dream a reality. I'd also like to thank Coach Nic for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO BISON!!!" Washington joins a Howard program that is experiencing upward trends. At the 2025 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, the Bison women finished just 43 points behind the champions. With Washington's best short-course times-26.51 in the 50 fly, 56.59 in the 100 fly, 24.19 in the 50 free, and 53.00 in the 100 free-she could have qualified for multiple A- and B-finals. This commitment reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics. More elite Black athletes of all sports are choosing HBCUs as spaces where they can thrive both athletically and culturally, experiencing the unique campus culture that these institutions offer. Coach Nic Askew continues to build a strong recruiting pipeline at Howard, and Washington's addition is another step in that direction. Her presence will not only enhance the visibility of HBCU swimming in the pool but also increase its visibility nationwide. As Howard aims for a conference title, Washington looks ready to make waves and represent with purpose.
