Community leader and visionary, ‘Mister Coral Gables' Mark Trowbridge has died at 56

Miami Herald22-02-2025

Mark Trowbridge was known as Mister Coral Gables.
'He was a great connector, and he saw himself as the connector of people in Coral Gables and throughout the community,' Sarah Artecona, Trowbridge's longtime friend.
Trowbridge served in the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and led as the CEO and president. He elevated the Chamber's profile, championing small businesses, and spearheading events like Burgerliscious and Small Business Saturday. Under his leadership, the Chamber's revenue grew by over 40%.
'For almost 20 years, he poured his heart and soul into the Chamber, transforming it into one of the most influential business organizations in the state,' said Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago in a statement.
Trowbridge, 56, died on Feb. 21 after having survived multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, but having heart complications.
'My heart goes out to all those around the County who were blessed by his fun and loving presence,' Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a statement. 'His legacy will live on with all the businesses and nonprofits he uplifted.'
'Enormous personality'
'He was larger than life,' said Artecona, who worked with him on the Chamber. 'He lived life with a passion. He loved his job. He always wanted to make things better.'
Whether he was walking down the street or enjoying lunch at one of the many local Gables restaurants, it was impossible to walk more than a few steps without someone greeting him, Artecona said.
'Mark was a force of nature — full of energy, kindness, and an unmatched ability to bring people together,' said Lago. 'His friendship was a gift, and his presence was a source of joy and inspiration.'
As he sat down to lunch or strolled through the streets, Mark would often leave with pages of notes — details about people he had met, follow-up conversations, introductions to make, and ways to help others, Artecona said.
'No one loved Coral Gables more than Mark Trowbridge,' said Coral Gables Commissioner Ariel Fernandez in a statement. 'His passion for our business community was unmatched, and his voice carried from South Florida to Tallahassee, always speaking with conviction and heart.'
Forever a Florida Gator
Trowbridge was an avid Florida Gators fan, having graduated from the University of Florida with his Bachelor's and Master of Education degrees in 1990 and 1992.
He moved to South Florida eight weeks before Hurricane Andrew struck in August 1992. He was a longtime resident of Miami Springs.
He had served as president of the national board for the University of Florida Alumni Association and never missed watching a Gators game.
Trowbridge played a key role in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, when the game was played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, serving as Chair of Recognition and Engagement for the volunteer team.
He had consulted on volunteer management and leadership development for organizations like the Orange Bowl Committee, Miami Open, Mayors' Summit of the Americas, and International Pow Wow. Trowbridge also taught Sports Management as an adjunct professor at Barry University and St. Thomas University.
'People loved working with him,' said Artecona. 'He had an enormous personality and a huge sense of humor.'
In 2009, Artecona and Trowbridge placed a bet. She is a big fan of the University of Alabama, and that year they went up against the University of Florida. The loser had to perform the winning team's fight song in front of 300 people. That year, Mark lost. Showing good sportsmanship, he draped an Alabama blanket around himself and sang the Alabama fight song at the Chamber breakfast held monthly at the Biltmore.
'Larger than life in the very best ways — great smile, great laugh, great work,' said David Lawrence Jr., chair of The Children's Movement of Florida and a retired publisher of the Miami Herald.
'Touched everything he tackled with joy — the Gables Chamber, public speaking, Junior League, the University of Florida, and more.'
Survivors
Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been set. Trowbridge is survived by his mother Mary Lou Trowbridge and sister and brother-in-law Tracy Trowbridge Newman and Stan Newman and their sons Ben and Hunter, his nephew Taylor Trowbridge, Taylor's wife Diana Trowbridge, and his sister-in-law Karen Trowbridge.
Fernandez said he has asked for City Hall to be lit in Burgundy, the color of Multiple Myeloma Awareness, for the week of Feb. 24.
'He left behind a universe of friends,' said Artecona.

Jayden Daniels 'Holding Commanders To A Standard' With Super Bowl Goals

Jayden Daniels 'Holding Commanders To A Standard' With Super Bowl Goals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It is a new year for Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels, and what happened last season is well and truly in the rearview mirror. Advertisement Yes, the 12-5 record and NFC Championship appearance were nice, but that means little right now and won't help the franchise in 2025. With Dan Quinn, Daniels, and a group of veterans, including Bobby Wagner, Marcus Mariota, and Zach Ertz, helping establish and maintain the culture that will be the driving force behind Washington's success, naturally, expectations are high entering 2025. But for Daniels, he is well aware that he and the franchise are starting from scratch as offseason workouts begin. 'I think it's a standard set,' Daniels said. 'You got the core guys that set the standard, and we got those guys back. So we're bringing in new people and we're holding them to that standard, but we know everything is not going to be given to us, we got to go out there and earn it each and every day.' Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels© Eric Hartline-Imagn Images Jayden being self-aware is nothing new, and yes, last season was superb by any metric you want to use. Now, everyone is on a level playing field until the season kicks off. Advertisement After so much heavy lifting was done last season to get the Commanders out of the NFL doldrums and into relevancy, the franchise won't want all of that work to go to waste by cutting corners and not being as focused. However, it is clear that Daniels and his teammates recognize that the standards they set last season equated to Super Bowl-level success, and if they want the same results, the standards must be maintained. And Jayden is making sure it is. The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to bench Justin Fields for Russell Wilson in 2024.

The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to bench Justin Fields for Russell Wilson in 2024. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired veteran quarterback Russell Wilson last offseason, quickly followed by them trading with the Chicago Bears to get Justin Fields. Advertisement The latter started out the year under center as a result of a calf injury to Wilson. But as soon as the veteran quarterback recovered, Fields was benched. And not everyone liked that idea. On a recent episode of the Bill Simmons Podcast, Albert Breer reported that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was one of the only people that thought benching Fields was the right move. "I think people there would tell you that the Russell Wilson thing undermines so many things in the last month of the season and that a lot of that building really wanted them to go back to Justin Fields," Breer said. "And it was something where Tomlin was kind of, again, all on his own on that one." Advertisement "People in the building'' is a tricky thing. Players? Assistant coaches? The "second-guess'' from then, by the way, can still be in play. Would the Steelers be better off in 2025 is Fields was still here? Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record in the six games that he started in, racking up 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception. He was also able to show his elite scrambling ability with 289 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. As for Wilson, the team was 6-5 with him under center, but four of their losses were all in a row to end the season, leaving them with a 10-7 record on the season. While that is still solid, some think they could have competed for the lead in the AFC North if Fields had remained the starter. Advertisement Now, the young quarterback will be looking for a fresh start with the New York Jets, and the Steelers will be left wondering what would have happened if they had never benched him. Bill Belichick's UNC contract buyout dramatically reduced. What does it mean?

When Bill Belichick agreed to become North Carolina's next head football coach in December 2024, many were surprised for a variety of reasons. There was one thing in particular that stood out about his five-year, $50 million contract that called into question Belichick's long-term fit with the program. The buyout on his contract would dramatically decrease on June 1, falling from $10 million to $1 million. As that detail became known, many speculated just how invested Belichick, 73, was in remaining in Chapel Hill for the long haul. However, the curiosity surrounding that date in Belichick's contract gained further attention for a different reason over the past month. Belichick's relationship with his girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, has drawn national headlines, leading some to speculate whether UNC would be willing to cut ties with him at some point this offseason. That said, June 1 has arrived, and Belichick is still employed by the Tar Heels, but could that change soon? Here's everything you need to know about Belichick, UNC and the June 1 buyout date. What are the details of the June 1 buyout date? While some have speculated that North Carolina could move on from Belichick due to the decrease in his buyout, it's actually only applicable if Belichick leaves on his own accord. So, if Belichick left to coach in the NFL, resigned or retired from coaching at any time beyond June 1, he would owe the school $1 million. Prior to Sunday, Belichick would've owed UNC $10 million if he left on his own volition. What would UNC owe Belichick if it fired him this offseason? North Carolina would have to pay Belichick substantially more money if it ended the relationship this summer. The first three years of Belichick's contract are fully guaranteed if he's fired without cause before the end of 2027. If he were to get fired this offseason, Belichick would be owed $30 million as he has a yearly salary of $10 million on his contract. How is Belichick and UNC's relationship going as of June 1? Despite the speculative noise surrounding a potential exit, Belichick and UNC have remained committed to each other, even as the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach has created some awkward headlines over the last month. Hudson seemingly became a household name in the college football world when she interjected when Belichick was asked a question about their relationship during his interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" in April. That interview led some to call into question just how involved Hudson is with not just Belichick's life, but also with UNC's football program. Emails obtained by The Assembly in March showed that Belichick asked UNC staff to copy Hudson on every email sent to him. In the aftermath of the "CBS Sunday Morning" interview, Meadowlark Media's Pablo Torre reported in May that Hudson was barred from UNC's football facility. UNC denied that was the case, though. "While Jordon Hudson is not an employee at the University or Carolina Athletics, she is welcome to the Carolina Football facilities," the school said in a statement on May 9. "Jordon will continue to manage all activities related to Coach Belichick's personal brand outside of his responsibilities for Carolina Football and the University." Later in May, Belichick told ESPN that Hudson "doesn't have anything to do with football," but admitted that he talked to the players about the off-field distraction. UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham didn't have any concerns about Belichick when he spoke with ESPN during the ACC spring meetings. "Bill [has] been great to work with," Cunningham said. "He talked about practicing like a pro and he runs a professional organization that is teaching students how to be professional in all aspects of their life. He is a very determined, professional individual, and that's the way he carries himself and the way he conducts the program." Later in May, Cunningham told Axios that UNC had sold out its season tickets for the 2025 season despite a price hike of 25% — something it didn't do in 2024 — and credited Belichick. How has UNC's football program changed under Belichick? Former UNC coach Mack Brown, who Belichick replaced, made headlines in May when he told SiriusXM College Sports Radio's "Dusty and Danny In the Morning," that the school had loosened up its academic requirements and made more investments into the football program ever since Belichick's hiring in December. "As far as North Carolina and Bill Belichick now, he's arguably the best coach ever," Brown said. "They've committed money to it. They've helped him with academics. They've lowered those standards some. So, there's absolutely no reason they shouldn't be successful … and they've changed the roster. I think they've signed maybe 60-something new transfers. "So, you've got a chance to succeed at the highest level, and I expect him to do that, and I'm proud for him." As there were rumors of Belichick asking for an increased name, image and likeness (NIL) budget contingent on his hiring, there was an expectation that it would be upwards of $20 million, CBS Sports reported in December . That seemed to help Belichick in the transfer portal this offseason, helping UNC land the ninth-best class, per 247 Sports. In terms of high school recruiting, Belichick helped UNC land the 36th-best recruiting class in 2025 and the program has the 20th-best recruiting class in 2026 as of Sunday, according to 247 Sports. What are the expectations surrounding Belichick and UNC entering 2025? Considering the success Belichick has had and the improved talent on the roster, it's easy to think that UNC should improve its record from the 6-7 record it posted in 2025. However, its win total is set at 7.5 wins at DraftKings Sports as of Sunday. Additionally, it has the sixth-best odds to win the ACC. Belichick and UNC will open its season against TCU, hosting the Horned Frogs in the final game of Week 1. What other details are there to know in Belichick's contract? Belichick's five-year deal with UNC includes a variety of bonuses and perks. Here's a closer look: An annual $100,000 expense allowance; $100,000 in expenses for relocating to North Carolina Bonuses between $150,000 for winning eight regular-season games to $350,000 for winning 12 regular-season games Bonus of $200,000 for leading UNC to a conference championship game to $300,000 if UNC wins that game; Bonuses for appearing in the final poll for the College Football Playoff, ranging from $250,000 for being in the top 25 to $500,000 for being in the top five CFP appearance bonuses, ranging from $750,000 for making the field to $1.75 million for winning the title Additional bonuses for bowl trips and the team's academic performance And perks such as country-club membership and up to 25 hours per year of private-aircraft usage The Associated Press contributed to this report.
