HT This Day: April 29, 1935 -- Horrific plane crash at Dum Dum in Calcutta
Calcutta: The worst flying disaster witnessed at Dum Dum occurred this morning when four persons were killed as a result of a collision of two aeroplanes over the aerodrome.
The victims were Mr. B. K. Das, who was flying his own machine, Mr. D. K. Roy, who was piloting a Bengal Flying Club machine and two joyriders Miss Ferguson and Mr. P. Gupta who was from Sylhet.
The 'planes fell into a garden near the aerodrome and were completely wrecked.
Mr. Das was one of the senior pilots of the Bengal Flying Club and Mr. Roy had recently obtained 'B' flying license from England. -A.P.I.

It transpires that Mr. Das's passenger was Miss Muriel Ferguson (22) from Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England. Mr. Das and Ferguson were both strapped in the machine and at the time of writing their bodies have not yet been extricated. It is believed that the other pilot. Mr. Roy and his passenger Mr. Gupta, jumped from the plane after the collision, which occurred about 500 feet above the ground. Their bodies were found about 50 yards from the wrecked machines.
The machines used were both Gypsy Moth. The crash occurred in village Gouripur, two miles north of the aerodrome. The officials of the Flying Club immediately visited the place ad had the bodies removed. The body of Miss Ferguson was sent to the Presidency General Hospital, and those of Mr. Das, Mr. Roy and Mr. P. Gupta, were made over to their relatives in Calcutta for cremation.

Escaped inmates from Meghalaya hospital caught after six months
Shillong: Two inmates who had escaped from the Nongpoh Civil Hospital in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district while undergoing treatment on November 15, 2024, have been arrested separately over the past week, police said on Wednesday. The Ri-Bhoi Police, along with their counterparts in Meghalaya's North Garo Hills, nabbed Pappu Chettri alias Robert Chettri (32), a resident of Mawsyntai village, Ri-Bhoi district, on Tuesday. They arrested Sunil Das (29), a resident of Dudhnoi in Assam's Goalpara district, on May 29. The duo, who had been on the run for six months, were in jail for separate cases. Ri-Bhoi superintendent of police (SP) Vivekananda Singh said, 'The coordinated effort with North Garo Hills Police was crucial in tracing and arresting both fugitives. We are verifying any support networks they may have had during their time in hiding.' Das was serving a life sentence in connection with a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at the Nongpoh Women police station. He had been under judicial custody and was receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital when he fled. He had earlier been convicted under Section 262 (deals with resistance or obstruction by a person to their lawful apprehension or detention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and had completed his sentence on April 22, 2023. Chettri was also in custody at the Nongpoh Women Police Station in connection with a 2019 case under Sections 341/363/376(2)(i) IPC (now Sections 126, 137, and 64(2)(i) BNS) and escaped along with Das. According to investigations, both of them fled to Goalpara district in Assam, where they lived under different identities to evade arrest. Security and prisoner escort protocols at medical facilities came under the scanner following the incident. A Ri-Bhoi police officer said that Das has already been re-lodged in jail and a team is currently escorting Pappu Chettri back to Nongpoh, where he is scheduled to be produced before the court on June 4.

Schoolteacher shot dead in Madhepura
Madhepura: A govt high school teacher was shot dead in broad daylight by motorcycle-borne assailants on the Singheshwar-Lalpur road near Laxminiya village in Madhepura district on Saturday. The victim, Ram Tahal Das (37), a resident of Karhara village under Gwalpara police station, was returning from his school with a colleague, Raviranjan Prasad, when the attack occurred around 12.30pm. Das, who was riding pillion on Prasad's motorcycle, had just finished his teaching duties at Khonhi Sonbersa High School under Shankarpur block. As the two travelled home, three masked criminals on a bike, lying in wait, began to chase them. They opened indiscriminate fire on Das, who fell from the motorcycle and died on the spot. Prasad escaped unhurt. Singheshwar police rushed to the scene upon receiving information. After completing necessary formalities, the body was sent to Madhepura Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. Madhepura SDPO Pravendra Bharti said, "Police are yet to ascertain the reason behind this gruesome murder. Investigation is on and the criminals involved in the incident would be nabbed soon." Das, the youngest of three brothers, had lived in a Thakurbari in Uda-Kishanganj since childhood. He pursued his education there and completed a postgraduate degree in Hindi. He had joined the school as a Hindi teacher four years ago.

Police detain teachers protesting against Bengal government's fresh recruitment notification
Police came down heavily on 'untainted' teachers continuing their protests across Kolkata and Bidhannagar on Friday May 30, 2025) after they decided to take out a rally to the State Secretariat to protest the issue of a notification for a fresh selection process. The West Bengal government issued a notification announcing a new State Level Selection Test for the recruitment of teachers for State-run schools, after the Supreme Court on April 3 cancelled the 2016 recruited panel over widespread occurrence of fraud. The apex court had directed the government to initiate fresh recruitments by May 31. On Friday, police detained protesters from various parts of the city who were reportedly on their way to join the rally. Hundreds of protesters were apprehended from places like Sealdah and Esplanade in Central Kolkata, and from outside the State education department headquarters in Bidhannagar. Shubhojit Das, a member of the Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM), claimed that protesters were asked to show identification and were detained from public places like buses, shops, shopping malls etc. 'We had decided to hold a shirtless rally to the State Secretariat at Nabanna today. We wanted to convey our message directly to the Chief Minister because we think our message is not reaching her. However, several of us were detained before the rally could even properly take off,' Mr. Das told The Hindu. The march to Nabana was also to protest the temporary detention of the six teachers who had demanded to meet the Chief Minister on Thursday, and to seek justice for the teacher who reportedly passed away of 'stress-induced stroke' during the protests, he added. Speaking about the detentions, Divisional Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee said, 'We had no information of any gathering or protest in my jurisdiction (Esplanade) area. Because this is a restricted area, we took necessary action… Law and order is our subject, but if the teachers take law and order into their own hands, then we will have to take action.' According to the new recruitment notification, applications were to be submitted between June 16 and July 14 this year. The exam and interview would be held between September and November. 'We are not at all happy about this new notification being issued. We were selected in an honest manner once, so we will not appear for re-examination. We want our jobs to stay as they were,' Hanjela Sheikh, a protesting teacher, said. He added that his fellow protesters were also aggrieved that the government had announced deadlines for a fresh process before the Supreme Court decide on the State's review petition. 'Instead of making us appear for re-examination, the government could have rescreened the OMR sheets from the 2016 panel to bring forth a new merit list if necessary,' Mr. Sheikh suggested.
