Monsod, 41, started her career studying to be a nurse, but decided to go to culinary school at age 27. She worked at Tender Greens, Burlap, and eventually at San Diego's notable Juniper & Ivy. When she joined Animae in 2020, Monsod was promoted to lead the restaurant less than a year later, where she introduced her fine dining take on Asian dishes, including Filipino household staples like kare kare and dinuguan. In mid-2024, Monsod (along with Brian Malarkey and Christopher Puffer of the Puffer Malarkey Collective) debuted Le Coq, the contemporary French steakhouse in downtown La Jolla.
Often referred to as 'the Oscars of food,' the James Beard Awards are among the most prestigious awards in the food and hospitality industry. Each year, the James Beard Foundation recognizes restaurants, bars, and hospitality professionals in categories like Outstanding Restaurant, Best Chef, and Best New Chef. The James Beard Foundation announces the first round of semifinalists on April 2. San Diego received three semifinalist nominations, including Monsod, Roberto Alcocer of the Michelin-starred Valle in Oceanside for the same category, and Roma Norte for Best New Bar.
The first James Beard Awards ceremony was held in 1991, when chefs like Rick Bayless, Nancy Silverton, and Wolfgang Puck walked away as winners. In recent years, the foundation has been under increased scrutiny after canceling its programming in 2020 and 2021 due to misbehavior and abuse allegations against nominated chefs, and a lack of nominated and winning Black chefs among the categories. In response, the James Beard Foundation conducted an internal audit to make its voting processes more inclusive and equitable before returning in 2022. The awards have also shifted the Best Chef category to a regional model to better recognize the diversity and depth of talent.

What they're saying: "My flabbers have been gasted," Bille told Axios after he won his award, adding that it feels like "validation." "So many people in this in this field have like imposter syndrome, which I had for a very long time, working under a lot of chefs that I never got recognition for ... And to be able to create my own table, my own chair, and have my own concept without any financial vacuum — my wife and I just doing it all on our own — it is gratifying to see that our hard work is paying off for my team."

Chefs and restaurants were honored on Monday night with James Beard Awards, one of the US culinary community's highest accolades. Bûcheron, a French American restaurant in Minneapolis, was named best new restaurant during the awards ceremony, which was held at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. The outstanding chef award went to Jungsik Yim, whose New York City restaurant Jungsik also holds three Michelin stars for Yim's 'New Korean' cuisine. Another top honor, for outstanding restaurant, was awarded to Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, Colorado. The cuisine focuses on the flavors of the northeastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia through the lens of Colorado. In addition to various restaurant and beverage categories, the awards also honor the best chefs in regions across the United States. Many of the evening's honorees highlighted the role of immigrants in American culinary culture. That message was underlined at the start of the ceremony by James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach. 'America's food scene has never been more dynamic, more diverse and exciting, and in large part we owe that dynamism, that vibrancy, to the immigrant communities that lead and underpin this industry in every way,' said Reichenbach. 'We get to taste the world because of them.' Chef Nando Chang, of Itamae AO in Miami, won the best chef award for the South. 'As bittersweet as this moment is for many immigrants in America, I want to say I could not be prouder or feel stronger to be a part of this beautiful country,' said Chang, a Peruvian American of Chinese descent who said he came to the US in 2001. This year's slate of awards featured three new categories in the beverage realm: best new bar and awards for outstanding professionals in beverage service and cocktail service. The new categories are part of an expansion over the next few years aimed at 'acknowledging the beverage industry in a more holistic way,' according to the James Beard Foundation. Identidad Cocktail Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico, earned the inaugural best new bar award. Arjav Ezekiel of Birdie's in Austin, Texas, won the outstanding professional in beverage service award, and Ignacio 'Nacho' Jimenez, of Superbueno in New York City, won outstanding professional in cocktail service. The 2025 awards come five years after the 2020 ceremony was abruptly canceled amid the Covid-19 pandemic's upending of the restaurant industry as well as criticism of the awards' lack of diversity and inclusion of chefs accused of abusive behavior. Since then, the James Beard Foundation has made efforts to address that criticism with a new code of ethics and changes to awards program policies and procedures. Seattle Chefs and Restaurants Miss Out at the 2025 James Beard Awards

Womp womp. For the fifth year in a row, Seattle took home a goose egg at the James Beard Awards. The Beards are the country's most prestigious food world prizes, often compared to the Oscars. (Like the Academy Awards, there's a swanky ceremony attended by cultural luminaries.) Every year Seattle chefs and restaurants earn some sort of recognition from James Beard judges in the form of semifinalist nods and nominations. In 2025, three Seattle-area chefs and restaurants scored nominations: Atoma for Best New Restaurant, Archipelago for Outstanding Hospitality, and Jay Blackinton of Houlme on Orcas Island for Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific Region. While it's true what they say, it is an honor to be nominated, none of the three wound up winning. This constitutes something of a drought for the city. In the 2010s a few Seattle chefs won Beards in the Northwest and Pacific category, most recently Brady Williams in 2019 (when the Tomo owner was still working at Canlis). In 2020 Rupee won a Beard for its design, and that same year Oriental Mart won an America's Classics Award, which are given out through a separate process. Since then, however, there's been nada.
