Sumo legend Hakuho to resign after stable scandal, say reports
TOKYO, June 2 — Retired sumo great Hakuho will quit the ancient Japanese sport following a row over the forced closure of his wrestling stable for physical abuse, reports said Monday.
The Mongolian-born Hakuho won a record 45 tournaments before retiring in 2021 to coach wrestlers, but his stable was indefinitely shuttered in April last year when one of his proteges was accused of bullying.
Hakuho was also handed an embarrassing demotion for failing to control the behaviour of Hokuseiho, who allegedly punched his lower-ranked stablemates and stole money from them.
The future of Hakuho's stable is still unclear more than a year later, leading the 40-year-old to tender his resignation to the Japan Sumo Association, reports said.
The reports said his resignation was accepted at an extraordinary board meeting in Tokyo.
When contacted by AFP, the Japan Sumo Association declined to comment.
Hakuho, who is currently in Mongolia according to posts he has made on social media, is expected to hold a news conference next week.
Born Munkhbat Davaajargal, Hakuho moved to Japan aged 15 and made his sumo debut in 2001.
He won his first top-division title in 2006 and went on to fight at the sport's highest rank of yokozuna more times than anyone in history. — AFP

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.

No decision on state polls alliance yet, says GRS

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has not made a decision on its alliances for the upcoming state election yet, says coalition chairman Hajiji Noor. While Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin had said that a pact with GRS for the polls was off the table, Hajiji played it down as 'merely Sabah Umno's stand', Bernama reported. 'We in GRS have not made any decisions yet. We will discuss and decide our election strategy, including which parties will be our partners, during the upcoming Supreme Council meeting,' he said. Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, added that the GRS Supreme Council will most likely only meet after Aidiladha, which falls on Saturday. 'We will discuss not only who our partners will be but also the distribution of seats, candidate selection to ensure winnability, campaign strategies, and efforts to strengthen party machinery across all constituencies.' On Tuesday, Bung said Sabah Umno will not work with GRS in the upcoming state election, but will only consider joining forces after the outcome of the state polls. While Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan have already announced an alliance for the Sabah polls, talks are said to be ongoing to rope GRS into the pact. GRS and PH are currently allies in the Hajiji-led state government while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly. Anwar Ibrahim, the PH chairman and prime minister, had expressed confidence that PH, BN and GRS would be able to agree on an alliance for the state election.
