PORT SUDAN, SUDAN, May 6, 2025 — Drones struck the airport and cut power across Port Sudan on Tuesday, officials said, the third straight day the army-aligned government's seat of power has come under attack.
The strikes, which also targeted an army base, come a day after Sudan's main fuel depot was hit, causing a massive blaze just south of the eastern city which had until Sunday been considered a safe haven for hundreds of thousands of displaced people fleeing the two-year war.An AFP correspondent reported loud explosions at dawn and plumes of smoke over the Red Sea coastal city, one from the direction of the port and another from a fuel depot just south. One drone hit "the civilian section of the Port Sudan airport", an airport official said, two days after the facility's military base was first attacked in drone strikes the army blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The RSF has not claimed the attacks, about 650 kilometresfrom its nearest known positions on Khartoum's outskirts.Air traffic was halted at the country's only airport still handling international civilian flights, the official there said.Another drone targeted the main army base in the city centre, an army source said, with witnesses reporting a major hotel hit nearby. Both sites are near the residence of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who has been at war with his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the RSF commander, since April 2023.A third drone hit a fuel depot near the southern port in the densely populated city centre, where the UN, aid agencies and hundreds of thousands of displaced people have relocated from Khartoum.Drones also hit Port Sudan's main power substation causing a city-wide blackout, the national electricity company said.Fires at airport AFP photos showed thick black smoke billowing over the skyline. There were no immediate reports of casualties.Witnesses in the city's north reported anti-aircraft fire from a military base."Yesterday and today just confirm to us that this war will follow us no matter where we go," said Hussein Ibrahim. The 64-year-old sought refuge in Port Sudan more than a year ago, fleeing RSF attacks on his hometown in Al-Jazira, about 1,000 kilometres away.At petrol stations across Port Sudan, most of them out of service, queues of cars stretched for more than a kilometreas drivers scrambled to fill their tanks. The army source said strikes had also targeted airport fuel depots.UN chief Antonio Guterres said the attacks were a "worrying development threatening the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations".Nearly all humanitarian aid into Sudan, where famine has been declared and nearly 25 million people suffer dire food insecurity, arrives through Port Sudan. The RSF has increasingly relied on drones since losing territory including nearly all of Khartoum in March.Sudan's war has killed tens of thousands of people, uprooted 13 million and created the world's largest hunger and displacement crises.
The United Nations said Tuesday it is "gravely concerned" by the growing numbers of Sudanese refugees fleeing from the western Darfur region to neighbouring Chad, with nearly 20,000 people arriving in the past two weeks alone.

Did a leaked report prove Imane Khelif is a biological male?
Published June 2nd, 2025 - 06:21 GMT ALBAWABA - Imane Khelif has once again been targeted on social media after leaked medical reports were released into the public domain, indicating that the Algerian boxing champion is a biological male, according to 3 Wire Sports. This all comes after Khelif sparked widespread controversy for copping the gold medal against Italy's Angela Carini during the 2024 Olympic Games. 36 hours after her win, Khelif was notified that she needed to undergo a sex test if she wanted to partake in future international competitions. On Friday, World Boxing announced a new policy stating that athletes over the age of 18 will have to undergo a sex test. World Boxing has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will supervise boxing in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as reported by Roya News. The organization wrote in a statement, "Imane Khelif may not participate in the female category at … any World Boxing event until Imane Khelif undergoes genetic sex screening in accordance with World Boxing's rules and testing procedures." 🚨A blood test leaked by Olympic press committee member Alan Abrahamson confirms that Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is male. The test was conducted in 2023 at the request of the IBA, and resulted in Khelif being disqualified from the women's world boxing championship in New Delhi. — REDUXX (@ReduxxMag) June 1, 2025 The document released by 3 Wire Sports indicates that the results came out "abnormal," further stating that the chromosome analysis revealed a "male karyotype." According to the National Institutes of Health, (XY) chromosomes indicate a male karyotype while (XX) is identified as a female karyotype. The test results were done by "Dr Lal PathLabs," a medical laboratory in New Delhi. It was created by the Northfield, Illinois-based College of American Pathologists (CAP) and certified by Switzerland's International Organization for Standardization (ISO). (Dr Lal PathLabs/ Obtained by 3 Wire Sports) While the professional Algerian boxer is yet to release a statement about the issue at hand, she has constantly stood her ground on being a biological woman, despite being subjected to hate and bullying. She said after winning at the 2024 Paris Olympics, "I am a woman, like any other woman. I was born a woman. I have lived as a woman. I compete as a woman." Khelif also stated that she competed in several competitions in the past. However, it was when she started achieving success that the hate campaigns against her were initiated. Since then, she has made several public appearances, including attending the Bottega Veneta fashion show in a mustard-colored dress, and was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Also Read Cholera outbreak kills 172 in 7 days in Sudan The country's Health Minister added that Sudan is currently recording up to 1,000 new cases of cholera daily, with the epicenter concentrated in Khartoum and Omdurman, and rising cases reported in multiple other regions. Cholera Response in Khartoum: Sudanese Health Minister Confirms Sufficient Medical Supplies and Ongoing Vaccination Efforts In a statement to the press, Sudan's Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, confirmed that the cholera outbreak in Khartoum State is… — Sudanese Echo (@SudaneseEcho) May 28, 2025 Sudan's Federal Health Minister, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, announced that the cholera outbreak in Khartoum is under control, crediting a coordinated effort between federal and local health authorities. He affirmed that medical supplies are sufficient, boosted by the arrival of 150 tons of intravenous fluids, and that a vaccination campaign is underway across all state districts to curb further spread. Dr. Ibrahim also linked the outbreak to the collapse of basic sanitation services following the retreat of rebel militias from Khartoum, saying deteriorating environmental conditions had allowed the disease to spread rapidly. However, he expressed optimism that sustained intervention and preventive efforts will soon ease the crisis. Despite recent emergency interventions that have reportedly begun to reduce the rate of new infections and increase recovery rates, the scale of the outbreak remains alarming. Also Read Israel attacks Sanaa airport, destroys last remaining Houthi plane A nationwide cholera vaccination campaign is expected to launch in early June. Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warned that Sudan's already fragile healthcare system cannot cope with the surge. MSF teams treated nearly 2,000 suspected cases last week, but many patients arrive too late for treatment, said MSF Sudan coordinator Joyce Bakker, describing scenes in cholera centers as 'deeply disturbing.' The World Health Organization has emphasized the urgent need for clean water, sanitation, and adequate healthcare. The outbreak comes amid Sudan's ongoing war, which has killed over 20,000 people and displaced more than 14 million since 2023. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
