Bundle Award rockets into Hong Kong Derby contention with barnstorming win
Talented four-year-old Bundle Award blasted into Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) calculations with a barnstorming victory in Sunday's Class Two Carpenter Handicap (1,800m) at Sha Tin.
Needing a win to boost his rating and secure a Derby berth, the John Size-trained gelding delivered handsomely, rocketing home from last under Ben Thompson to score by a length and a quarter.
With his rating to jump from 75 into the 80s, Bundle Award will leap into the field of 14 for the city's most prestigious race on March 23.
'He did very well. He seems to settle and relax and didn't seem to waste any energy. He had plenty of resources left for the finish,' Size said after Bundle Award bounced back from his last-start fifth behind Sky Heart.

'I think that he drew well last start – he drew gate one. Maybe that was no help to him. Anyway, today he showed us what he wanted.'
Ridden patiently from barrier eight behind a solid speed set by $3.8 favourite Sky Heart, Bundle Award exploded down the centre of the track in the straight to comfortably account for Markwin.
Like Bundle Award, the Cody Mo Wai-kit-trained Markwin was racing out of the handicap and the second placing could lift him from a rating of 76 into the Derby picture.
Helene Feeling ran third ahead of Caspar Fownes' duo Lo Rider and Sky Heart, who look set to miss out on Derby starts after coming up short.
Sky Heart, who copped pressure from Unbelievable mid-race, kicked clear early in the straight but was collared passing the 150m.
The Carpenter Handicap is unofficially known as the Collection Stakes after John Moore persuaded Jockey Club officials to expand the contest's ratings band, allowing his import Collection to run a fortnight before the Derby. Collection saluted by more than four lengths and went on to win the 2009 Derby as the $1.4 favourite.
Bundle Award's second Hong Kong victory, following his 1,400m triumph under James McDonald in January, left an impression on Thompson.
'It felt as good as it would have looked,' Thompson said. 'I was confident he would let rip when it was time to go. He was super.
'He's handled by a master in John Size. He's versatile. He's a lovely horse.'
Thompson will be in the frame for his first Hong Kong Derby ride in what would be a huge opportunity for the Australian jockey.
Master trainer Size, who maintained his lead in the trainers' premiership with his 37th success of the season, will chase a fourth Derby after previous success with Fay Fay (2012), Luger (2015) and Ping Hai Star (2018).
Size and David Hayes are tied on 37 wins but the former holds the title lead with more seconds.
Bundle Award won three straight races in Victoria last year under the name of Prince Prawn before he was bought by Hong Kong owner Colin Lo Chor-cheong.

In other Derby news on Sunday, Light Years Charm's late bid to leap into contention for the HK$26 million feature came up short.
Chasing back-to-back wins and a boost to his rating of 75, the David Eustace-trained gelding could only manage third as the $2 favourite in the Class Three Tak Ku Ling Handicap (1,600m), which was won by Patch Of Cosmo.
The other Derby hopefuls in the race, Liveandletlive and Top Gun, ran fifth and 13th, respectively.

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn
O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn Jockey Wayne Lordan rides Lambourn to victory at the Epsom Derby. Photo: AFP Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien won a record-extending 11th Epsom Derby as Lambourn put up an astonishing performance to lead from start to finish on Saturday. For O'Brien it completed an extraordinary two days as Minnie Hauk won the Oaks on Friday and his Jan Brueghel won the other Group One race the Coronation Cup. It is not the first time the 55-year-old has achieved the Oaks/Derby double, last doing it in 2020 with Love (Oaks) and Serpentine. Jockey Wayne Lordan was never challenged in winning his first Derby on his ninth ride in the race considered to be the 'blue riband' of flat racing. None of the other fancied horses landed a blow and it was two outsiders that were closest at the finish – Lazy Griff (50/1) was second with 28/1 chance Tennessee Stud, trained by O'Brien's son Joseph, third. "I knew I'd gone a good gallop, his ears were pricked and I knew he had plenty left," said Lordan. "He's a horse that we've always felt stays well so I just thought anybody that gets to me will have to stay well and it'd be tough for them." Lordan's career was in doubt a couple of years ago after a dreadful fall in the Irish Derby in which he suffered a fractured leg and elbow. Saturday, though, represented his biggest ever victory. "It's one of the greatest races," said the 43-year-old. "For any jockey that wants to start out, all they ever want to do is win the Derby and I work for Aidan, Ballydoyle, Coolmore so I'm in a lucky position that I get to ask for a horse like this." Jimmy Ting hoping for another day in Paradise at Sha Tin
Little Paradise salutes under Luke Ferraris at Sha Tin in May. Photo: Kenneth Chan Jimmy Ting Koon-ho is hoping a better draw and some further improvement will give Little Paradise every chance of remaining undefeated in the Class Three Tin Wan Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Successful in both career starts, Little Paradise clung on by a head after leading throughout from gate 13 on debut in March, before showing his versatility by storming home from behind midfield to salute by a length and three-quarters after jumping from gate 10 last month. Luke Ferraris was in the saddle for both of those triumphs and the South African jockey will be thrilled with the options barrier five gives him aboard Little Paradise this weekend. Ferraris galloped the three-year-old on the Sha Tin dirt on Wednesday morning and Ting was pleased with the jockey's report. Clinging on! Young talent Little Paradise prevails on debut at Sha Tin with @LukeFerraris for Jimmy Ting... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 30, 2025 'Luke rode him [Wednesday] morning and said the horse is going better than last time,' Ting said. 'The past two times the horse was still coming up to full fitness – he wasn't 100 per cent. This time he is still not 100 per cent but he has improved.' Little Paradise was hit with a nine-point ratings rise for his last-start win and will carry 124lb on Class Three debut. 'He's a nice horse and after his past two races, the horse is still improving. He gets a better draw this time and he will have his chance to win again,' said Ting of Little Paradise, who tackles the likes of fellow hat-trick seeker Moduleconstruction, another exciting three-year-old in Ahren, Lifeline Express and Romantic Son this weekend. Among those is The Absolute, who produced an improved third last start and has drawn barrier four in the Class Three Ping Tin Handicap (1,400m). 'He's a roarer, so he needs a smooth run. If you hold him a little bit tight, he can't breathe, so hopefully he gets a fast pace and can gallop smoothly, then he will run better,' said the trainer. It is Lyle Hewitson who will be tasked with ensuring The Absolute that smooth run, while Harry Bentley hopes aboard Ting's other two runners – Thunder Blink and Happy Universe. Glory Elite breaks through! The Russian Revolution gelding makes all for Derek Leung and Jimmy Ting... #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 19, 2024 A weekend winner would be a welcome end to a testing week for Ting after the handler's stable star, Glory Elite, was struck down by tendon injuries to both front legs. Victorious for the fourth time at Happy Valley in April, the 90-rated Glory Elite was set to contest Wednesday night's Class Two at the city circuit, however he will now be rehabbed with an eye to returning during the 2025-26 season. 'It's not too bad, hopefully he can recover,' said Ting. The weekend's Sha Tin meeting marks the return of twilight racing in the city, with Sunday the first of seven fixtures to kick off at 4pm due to the hot weather.

Hong Kong hails ‘overwhelming support' for legalising basketball betting, proposes 50% levy on profits
The Hong Kong government has hailed 'overwhelming support' from scholars, athletes, and youth groups for its plan to legalise basketball betting in the city, following the conclusion of a one-month public consultation last month. Ninety-four per cent of the 1,063 submissions received by the government between April and May 'expressed support or positive views' on the proposal to regulate basketball betting under the Betting Duty Ordinance, according to a paper submitted by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau to the Legislative Council on Thursday. Those who supported the legal amendment said public demand for basketball betting has 'increased significantly,' and a regulatory regime can protect bettors' rights and interests. The government proposed in April to amend the ordinance to grant the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs the power to issue a basketball betting license to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). The regulatory regime will mirror the existing one for football betting, the government said. In the paper released on Thursday, the government proposed imposing a 50 per cent levy on the net profits from basketball betting. Citing responses from supporters of the legislative proposal, the government said the HKJC may donate its additional revenue to welfare and charitable purposes. The tax revenue generated may also help the government allocate more resources on social welfare, supporters said, according to the government. Financial Secretary Paul Chan first unveiled the government's intention to regulate basketball betting during his 2025 budget speech in February. He said the legalisation could tackle illegal gambling and raise tax revenue amid the city's estimated deficit of HK$87.2 billion. The finance chief projected that regulating basketball betting could generate HK$1.5 billion to HK$2 billion in tax revenue. The government acknowledged on Thursday that 36 submissions – or 3.4 per cent of the responses collected – opposed the proposal. Those who objected raised concerns about the adverse impact of basketball betting on the youth, adding illegal gambling still existed after football betting was legalised. Responding to the concerns, the government said in the paper that the impact of betting activities on young people has been 'steady' in recent years. The proportion of bettors aged between 18 and 21 also 'consistently remained below two per cent,' the government said quoting the HKJC. Some suggested the government to prohibit individuals aged between 18 and 25 from placing bets online, while others proposed imposing restrictions on the amount and number of bets that can be placed by young people. The paper submitted on Thursday is set to be discussed by lawmakers on the Legislative Council's Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports on Monday. 'Disastrous move' In February, the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights criticised the government's plan to regulate basketball betting, saying that giving a green light to basketball betting was a 'disastrous move.' The group said popularising sports betting could 'lure' young people to bet with their limited financial resources that should otherwise go to other needs. Gambling loss may also result in psychological pressure and guilt, which may deter individuals from seeking help, it said, warning that gamblers could enter a 'vicious cycle' where they turn to lending agencies or engage in criminal activities.
