Hurricanes end Moana Pasifika's fairytale season

1News2 days ago

Moana Pasifika's fairytale season has come to an abrupt end at the hands of the Hurricanes.
Needing a bonus-point win to progress to the playoffs for the first time, the task proved too tall for Moana, who fell to a ruthless 'Canes outfit 64-12 on Saturday.
The home side were clinical across the park, running in 10 tries at the 'Caketin' to send Moana Pasifika crashing out of the competition, while keeping the Blues' faint hopes of a title defence alive.
Ardie Savea did not have a happy homecoming in his first return to the region since his move to Moana Pasifika. Despite his best efforts, with several trademark turnovers and a try, Moana barely fired a shot in their final outing of the season.
Things started positively for the visitors, with Solomon Alaimalo plucking an intercept and linking with Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa to score under the sticks.

That would be as good as it got in the first 40 for Moana, who conceded four tries before the break, including two individual stunners.
First, Devan Flanders took a wide ball on the wing and sent an audacious chip over the top, gathering the perfect bounce and strolling over.
Then, just on the break, Peter Umaga-Jensen took a wayward clearing kick on halfway and sliced Moana Pasifika open, shrugging off several would-be tacklers on his way to a brilliant solo try.
The Hurricanes continued to pour on the points after oranges, Umaga-Jensen with another jinking run, powering past two tacklers to bag his brace.
Replacement front rowers Raymond Tuputupu and Pouri Rakete-Stones both barged their way over the chalk to extend the advantage, with Matt Proctor showing his class, as he weaved around the defence to put his side into the 50s.
Former Moana Pasifika halfback Ere Enari sneaked his way over from the base to rub more salt in the wound, while debutant Tjay Clarke closed things out with a 10th Hurricanes try.

Hard-working Highlander makes team of year

Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea headlines a tournament team named following the conclusion of the round-robin phase of Super Rugby. Super Rugby organisers have announced an honorary team with the first-ever Super Rugby Pacific Team of the Year to officially be recognised next year. The team is formed from the top-ranked players in each position based on Player of the Year votes from across the season. The votes come from players on other teams. Savea received the most votes of any player and was recently named Player of Super Rugby Pacific. Hard-working Highlanders Timoci Tavatavanawai received 32 votes and is one of two centres named. The Super Rugby Pacific statement said where players played or are capable of playing multiple positions, for Team of the Year purposes they were assigned only the position that they most played during the 2025 season. Carlo Tizzano, Fraser McReight and Langi Gleeson could not initially be separated for the third back row position, having received the same amount of Player of the Year votes (29). The Player of the Year tie-breaker was to compare the number of 'three votes' received, which saw Gleeson (4) surpassed by Tizzano and McReight (both 5). Remarkably, both flankers received the same number of 'three votes', 'two votes' and 'one vote' during the season, which means they share the final back row selection. 2025 Super Rugby Pacific team of the year PROPS Allan Alaalatoa (ACT Brumbies, 20 votes), Angus Bell (NSW Waratahs, 14 votes) HOOKER Tevita Ikanivere (Fijian Drua, 19 votes) SECOND ROW Jeremy Williams (Western Force, 21 votes), Patrick Tuipulotu (Blues, 20 votes) BACK ROW Ardie Savea (Moana Pasifika, 46 votes), Tom Hooper (ACT Brumbies, 31 votes), Carlo Tizzano (Western Force, 29 votes) / Fraser McReight (Queensland Reds, 29 votes) HALF BACK Cam Roigard (Hurricanes, 28 votes) FIRST FIVE Damian McKenzie (Chiefs, 36 votes) CENTRES Timoci Tavatavanawai (Highlanders, 32 votes), AJ Lam (Blues, 14 votes) WINGERS Harry Potter (Western Force, 18 votes), Kini Naholo (Hurricanes, 18 votes) FULLBACK Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii (NSW Waratahs, 20 votes)

Hurricanes not interested in being lucky loser

Coach Clark Laidlaw of the Hurricanes Photo: Masanori Udagawa / PHOTOSPORT The Hurricanes are only thinking about winning as they prepare for Saturday's Super Rugby play-off game against the Brumbies in Canberra. The Hurricanes scored a big win over Moana Pasifika on Saturday to finish fourth in the standings. It means they will travel to Canberra this weekend, while top qualifier the Chiefs host the Blues and second seeds the Crusaders play the Reds. The schedule has the Brumbies-Hurricanes game last. If results go to seedings in the earlier games and the Chiefs beat the Blues and the Crusaders beat the Reds, then the Brumbies and Hurricanes will play each other knowing that no matter what the result they will both qualify for the semi-finals. Under a new format this season, the highest ranking loser from the three games will qualify for the semi-finals. Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw said that situation is not something he is thinking about. "That's seven days away and two games away that scenario might play itself out," Laidlaw said. "If the Crusaders lose and we win, we got a home semi so there's another scenario we might have to think about. "I've never gone into a game of rugby thinking we might want to lose, so it will be all guns blazing and we'll get ready for it. Raymond Tuputupu of the Hurricanes celebrates his try. Photo: Elias Rodriguez / Laidlaw said injuries to backs Ruben Love and Peter Umaga-Jenson from the Moana Pasifika game appeared minor while he could have the use of hooker Asafo Aumua, lock Caleb Delany and winger Ngane Punivai after they missed that game. The Hurricanes beat the Brumbies earlier this season having not won in Canberra since 2017. Super Rugby play-off games: Friday, 7.05pm: Crusaders v Reds; Apollo Projects Stadium, Christchurch Saturday, 7.05pm: Chiefs v Blues; FMG Stadium Waikato, Hamilton Saturday, 9.35pm: Brumbies v Hurricanes; GIO Stadium, Canberra
