Delta offers Toronto crash passengers $30,000 ‘no strings attached' as some retain lawyers
Delta Airlines will pay a five-figure sum to the passengers who were left 'hanging upside down like bats' after their plane flipped while landing at the Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Passengers will each be offered $30,000 with 'no strings attached,' according to a Delta spokesperson. That means passengers can still sue and Delta could still have to pay the resulting damages, according to aviation law experts.
The payments will total around $228 million.
Passengers can still sue Delta for the crash even if they accept the payments, Alan Tan, an aviation law professor at the National University of Singapore, told Business Insider. Aviation attorney Erin Applebaum told the same outlet that payments are 'fairly typical' for major accidents like these.
Passengers are already gearing up to sue, with Canadian law firm Rochon Genova announcing some on board have retained their attorneys following the crash.
The law firm says passengers can sue for pain and suffering, loss of income, cost of healthcare and any mental health treatment if connected to a physical injury.
These passengers could be awarded up to $280,000 CAD without ever having to prove the airline was liable, according to the firm. Any damages above that would require passengers to prove liability.
This payment also does not mean Delta is admitting liability, according to The New York Times, and a passenger who wins damages in a later claim will have this initial payment deducted from the total.
All 80 people on board survived the Monday afternoon crash but twenty-one people were hospitalized, including one child. All but one person had been discharged as of Wednesday morning.
Passengers recalled dangling from their seatbelts after the Bombardier CRJ-900 flipped on the runway.
'We hit the ground and we were sideways, and then we were hanging upside down like bats,' passenger Peter Koukov told ABC News. 'It all happened pretty, pretty fast. The plane was upside down, obviously, some people were kind of hanging and needed some help being helped down.'
The crash itself was quick, and that there was 'no warning' beforehand, passenger John Nelson told ABC News.
'It was just incredibly fast. There was a giant firewall down the side. I could actually feel the heat through the glass,' Nelson said. 'Then we were going sideways. I'm not even sure how many times we tumbled, but we ended upside down.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Delta and airport officials praised the 'textbook' response from emergency crews following the wreck. Others have also praised flight attendants for getting every single passenger evacuated quickly.
'These people put their lives on the line — they're the last people off the airplane, and I think sometimes we forget that,' Graham Braithwaite, director of aerospace and aviation at Cranfield University, told The Washington Post.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the company's 'most pressing priority remains taking care of all customers and Endeavor crew members who were involved.'

Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo welcomes family of 5 grey wolves from Vancouver
Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg is inviting guests to connect with and meet a new family of five grey wolves that it welcomed from the Greater Vancouver Zoo on Thursday. The pack includes the parents, seven-year-old Chinook and Gigi, and their three offspring — Comet, who is male, and Stella and Virgo, who are female — curator Shane Pratt told CBC News on Friday. The pups are three years old. "This is really big. They're very interactive animals," Pratt said. "We really like having people connect with our animals and inspire people to conserve," as well as "learn about how important they are for ecosystems," he said. The family's arrival follows the death of Bear, 14, in March, the last grey wolf in the zoo's original pack, the Assiniboine Park Conservancy said in a Friday press release. "Grey wolves are an iconic Canadian species that can be found across the country, including right here in Manitoba," Dr. Chris Enright, senior director of zoological operations, said in the release. "Unfortunately, fear and misunderstanding have led to instances of human-wolf conflict and, in some cases, over-hunting," he said. "Educating people about the critical role keystone species like wolves play in their ecosystems and why they should be protected is an important part of what we do here at the zoo." So far, the new pack appears to be adapting fairly well into their expansive boreal forest and grasslands habitat, Pratt said, with Gigi being the first to come out and showing the most confidence. Due to the ongoing wildfire situation, Pratt says they're keeping a close eye on air quality statements, especially for those animals with the most sensitive lungs, such as birds. The zoo has policies and protocols in place to help move animals into a cleaner air environment, Pratt said. "We haven't really seen any animals in distress yet," he said. "We're very thankful, because we like keeping animals outside as long as possible." The family of grey wolves joins other new additions at the zoo since last fall, including three red pandas, called Suva, Mei Mei and Kelly, and a Siberian musk deer named Ozzy, the conservancy said in the release. The zoo is also hosting an exhibit called the Survival of the Slowest featuring a hedgehog, a bearded dragon and two-toed sloths, along with other animals, until Sept. 1.

101-year-old Dunwoody veteran travels to France for 81st D-Day anniversary
The Brief Hilbert Margol, 101, traveled from Dunwoody, Georgia, to Normandy, France, to mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day, honoring the fallen soldiers of World War II. A World War II veteran who helped liberate Dachau concentration camp, Margol reflected on the sacrifices made and was awarded France's Legion of Honour last year. Despite his accomplishments, Margol humbly states, "I never considered myself or any of the other veterans heroes because in my judgment, the heroes are the guys who didn't make it back." ATLANTA - At 101 years old, Dunwoody resident and World War II veteran Hilbert Margol made the journey to Normandy, France, this week to mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day, joining a small group of surviving veterans honoring those who fought and died in the pivotal battle. Although Margol did not serve on D-Day itself, he was part of the Allied forces that ultimately secured victory in World War II. He first visited Normandy last year for the 80th anniversary and immediately knew he wanted to return. "It was such a fantastic trip. I said, I have to go back again," Margol said. Before leaving for France, Margol shared a farewell kiss with his wife of more than 70 years — a moment captured just as it was during his trip the year before. "We knew almost nothing about such camps, so whatever we saw, witnessed a lot of dead bodies and so forth. We didn't understand why they were there, why they were dead," Margol said. Last year, Margol was one of 11 U.S. veterans awarded the Legion of Honour, France's highest order of merit. "When President Macron of France pinned the medal on my jacket, he leaned over and kissed me on both cheeks, which I expected because that's European custom," Margol said. Steelworkers Humanity Fund donates $20,000 to support wildfire relief efforts in Saskatchewan
TORONTO, June 06, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is donating $20,000 to support people and communities evacuated due to recent wildfires in Saskatchewan. Following a worsening of weather conditions in Northern Saskatchewan the SHF is partnering again with the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) by answering its emergency wildfire relief appeal. This donation follows the SHF's contribution to emergency relief efforts in neighbouring Manitoba. Many United Steelworkers (USW) union members in the area have been directly affected by the situation and have been evacuated, including virtually all USW members who live in Creighton, Sask., located down the road from Flin Flon, Man. As of June 4, the CRC has registered more than 8,000 people from over 2,800 households evacuated due to the wildfires in Saskatchewan. The Steelworkers Humanity Fund's latest $20,000 donation to the CRC will be used to assist those affected by the wildfires in Saskatchewan with immediate and ongoing relief. This includes financial assistance, support to evacuees and the communities hosting them, recovery and resilience efforts in response to the wildfires, as well as supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future disaster events within the province.
