Acer combines QD-OLED with 500Hz speeds in new Predator gaming monitor
Looking for "UltraSpeed" refresh rates for PC gaming? Acer has unveiled its new lineup of Predator QD-OLED gaming monitors just in time for Computex 2025, and one boasts a 500Hz refresh rate.
Today, Acer announced new Predator and Nitro gaming monitors, including a 27-inch Predator X27U F5 QD-OLED monitor with a 2560 x 1440 per-pixel resolution and a whopping 500Hz refresh rate, along with another 27-inch Predator X27 X QD-OLED sporting a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution and 240Hz speeds.
We've tested 500Hz gaming monitors before, and the Samsung Odyssey G6 OLED display we saw at CES 2025 is also equipped with the speedy refresh rate. Now Acer is joining the bandwagon, and it's clear 500Hz is here to stay.
You can also expect new Acer Nitro Google TV smart monitors, including the 31.5-inch 4K Acer Nitro GA321QK P with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 34-inch ultrawide QHD (3440 x 1440) Nitro GA341CUR W0 with 240Hz speeds. With Google TV onboard, they offer access to plenty of streaming apps, along with gamer-ready features.
Otherwise, the "UltraSpeed" QD-OLED Predator gaming monitor takes center stage.

Both the Predator X27U F5 and Predator X27 X come with similar 27-inch QD-OLED panels and designs (although the X27 X's stand looks slightly more stylish), with 150mm height adjustments and 90-degree pivots for the right angle.
Otherwise, there are two big differences here: the refresh rate and resolution. If you're looking for sky-high 500Hz refresh rates, you'll want to look at the Predator X27U F5.

This Predator monitor offers 0.03 response speeds, up to 300 nits native brightness and 1,000 nits peak brightness, DCI-P3 99% color gamut coverage, 10-bit color and VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 500 certification. So expect strong visual details and buttery smooth refresh rates when gaming. For the competitive gamers out there, especially in Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, The Finals and more, this monitor should do the trick.
For those after 4K visuals, the Predator X27 X has the resolution. It shares the same response speeds and certifications as its sibling, but this offers 3840 x 2160 resolution with 240Hz refresh rates. This is still very high, but for those single-player PC games, this is where this monitor aims to shine.
What's more, both monitors support AMD FreeSync Premium Pro tech to eliminate screen tearing, but note there's no support for Nvidia G-Sync.
The Acer Predator X27U F5 starts at €899 (around $999/£759) and the Predator X27 X is set from €1,099 (around $1,229/£929). Both gaming monitors will be available in select regions sometime this summer, between July and September.

Where the Hell Did the Awesome Animated ‘Predator' Movie Come From?
Most movie fans were surprised to hear we were getting not one, but two new Predator movies this year. We knew that Dan Trachtenberg, the director of Prey, was working on a live-action Predator movie with Elle Fanning. But then we heard, seemingly out of nowhere, that we were also getting an animated Predator movie. It's called Predator: Killer of Killers, and it comes to Hulu June 6. Clearly, animated movies take some time, so this has been the plan all along, but we talked to both Trachtenberg and his co-director Josh Wassung about where this incredibly surprising and overly ambitious idea came from. 'After Prey, I was trying to figure out what I would potentially do with the sequel,' Trachtenberg told io9 via video chat. 'So often the sequel is just 'the next installment of the thing that was cool' rather than being 'a thing that is cool in and of itself.' So it's really forcing myself to figure out what could I possibly do that could be cool also in the Predator franchise or in the sci-fi space [in general]. Just me wanting to do a movie I could care about as much. And in thinking about that, three cool ideas came to mind. One of them is Predator: Badlands, which comes out in November. The other was Killer of Killers, and then the third is something that has yet to be made.' With Badlands in November and Killer of Killers this week, it's clear that executing those ideas meant Trachtenberg would have to make both movies at the same time. That meant bringing on some help, and he found that person in Josh Wassung. Wassung is the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of the Third Floor, one of Hollywood's leading visualization companies. He and Trachtenberg worked together on multiple projects, including Prey, and felt a spark of inspiration once the Third Floor began developing a pipeline to work in animation as well as live action. 'We were developing this new division of the company,' Wassung told io9. 'I was showing [Trachtenberg] stuff and he would get just as excited as I got at it. We're just like, 'Man, this is gonna be so awesome.' And then during one of those excited, nerding-out conversations, someone said, 'Wouldn't it be cool if we made an animated Predator movie?' And we were like, 'Oh, that is almost too cool to hope for.' Fast forward to after Prey and it did so well that it actually became a reality. And so he invited me to be co-director on the [animation and] technical side [as well as] the artistic side. And he's bringing his franchise, live-action experience, and his storytelling expertise. And then we merged together.' But saying 'Wouldn't it be cool if we made an animated Predator movie?' is just the first step. Killer of Killers is more than that. It's three separate stories that seem like an anthology, and then come together to form one huge story. With Prey, Trachtenberg and his team saw that the idea of doing a Predator movie in a different time period worked. So, the idea of telling stories in three different time periods—one following a Viking raider, another a feudal Ninja, and the third a World War II pilot—was the easy part. It was that next part that really brought it all together. 'Truly, the great key turn was 'Oh wait a second. It's not three stories. It's one story,'' Trachtenberg said. 'First thinking of Twilight Zone: The Movie and then realizing, 'No, no, there's another kind of anthology.' Pulp Fiction is also an anthology, and that really does feel like one story. So yeah, then the champions all coming together in an arena suddenly felt like 'Wow, this gets wider at the end.' It doesn't just get bigger and longer, it gets wider and covers stuff that was already happening theoretically in the franchise that we didn't even know about.' We'll dive a bit more into that statement later this week once people have seen the movie because, yes, Predator: Killer of Killers changes the Predator franchise in some radical new ways. One way it doesn't change it, though, is in keeping with the DNA of the best Predator movies. It's got great, visceral action. Lots of cool gadgets. Powerful characters on a personal journey. And, most importantly, it messes with audience expectations. 'It's one movie that turns into another,' Trachtenberg said. 'Predator starts out as… Rambo. I'm seeing an action movie in the jungle with [Arnold Schwarzenegger] fighting bad terrorists or whatever and then an alien creature shows up. So you're in a movie, and then an alien creature shows up, and that's very much a part of Killer of Killers and of course, Prey and in Badlands in a way that no one's expecting.' Another thing no one is expecting is that this animated Predator film would be so good. But it is. Ford's Gen 3 Coyote V8 Dissected: The Hidden Cause of Engine Failure
Ford introduced its Coyote V8 engine as an evolution of its modular V8 platform, marking the Blue Oval's return to high-performance V8s, particularly in the Mustang GT. However, this engine isn't just exclusive to the long-running muscle car nameplate – several models also made use of this versatile engine, some even outside Ford's stables. The Ford F-150 is one such model that benefits from the Coyote V8, particularly its third iteration, introduced in 2018. This generation of the Coyote received both port and direct injection, along with PTWA liners and increased bore. It even saw the birth of the "Predator," a 760-hp supercharged variant used in the mighty Raptor R. The Coyote V8 has established itself as a reliable performance-driven mill, but it's also known to be reliable, suffering only a handful of issues associated with its name. Some can reach hundreds of thousands of miles – like this example in the spotlight by YouTube engine coroner, I Do Cars. In this teardown video, we get to see a third-generation Coyote V8 from a 2018 Ford F-150, which is presumed to have reached over 100,000 miles. The engine is apparently all locked up, but further inspection revealed what killed the Coyote and what made it such a special specimen of Ford engineering. While I Do Cars was under the impression that the V8 in question was all banged up, initial inspection showed that it wasn't too bad. It rotated manually with a few internal clicks. The spark plugs appeared to be overdue, and while the intake ports were dirty, the valves were clean enough to suggest port/direct injection was helping. Further examination of the top portion showed promising revelations, with clean sections after removing the valve covers. There were no metal glitter, damaged cam lobes, or broken valvetrain parts. Interestingly, a timing chain slap was discovered as the source of the clicks, due to the unloaded oil pressure-dependent tensioners. However, the cylinder heads showed heavy carbon and oil deposits, suggesting the engine was burning oil. One cylinder showed odd residue or discoloration, while the pistons came with a heavy carbon buildup in ring lands, suggesting oil control ring failure. Some oil rings were seized, others barely protruded, confirming oil consumption problems. Overall, the Coyote V8 engine teardown showed minimal and typical wear after over 100,000 miles (apart from the plastic oil pan), with I Do Cars claiming it is a candidate for a rebuild. It wasn't flawless, but its failure was only from burning too much oil, which led to catalytic converter damage – the only persistent problem associated with Coyote V8s, beyond issues with its 10-speed transmission. There was recently an early screening of director Dan Trachtenberg's new animated Predator anthology series Predator: Killer of Killers , and those who attended loved what it delivered! The animated series was described as 'Compelling,' 'Violent,' 'Full of vicious kills,' 'Badass incarnate,' and it's said to be 'made by Predator fans for Predator fans.' I can't wait to see the series for myself! I'm excited about this thing! Predator: Killer of Killers is a three-part anthology that puts the focus in Yautja warriors hunting human prey across world history. The anthology story follows 'three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. 'But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent – the ultimate killer of killers.' The voice cast includes Lindsay LaVanchy, Louis Ozawa, Rick Gonzalez, and Michael Biehn. Trachtenberg co-directed this project alongside Josh Wassung while on location for Predator: Badlands . He said: 'We were writing the script for [ Killer of Killers ] while we were prevising stuff on [ Badlands ], and then [once on location] in New Zealand, on the way to shoot [ Badlands ], we would remote with everyone back here and [watch footage] thanks to Starlink.'
