Kansas City Fire Department commends bystanders who saved two people's lives
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Fire Department said its crew recently got a big assist from a couple of Good Samaritans who helped save not one, but two lives.
FOX4 spoke with two people who jumped into action when one of their customers went into cardiac arrest.

Nine years as a server at Kate's Kitchen and this was a first: Chloe Rueter helped save a life.
She said the customer collapsed right in front of her. Rueter said she called 911 immediately.
'He's one of our regulars that have been coming in here for a very long time,' Rueter said. 'It was very scary.'
Server Molly Budzinski said they couldn't find a pulse. That's when she and another customer, a nurse, started hands only CPR.
'There for a moment, you're literally someone's heartbeat and that is a lot to come to terms with and understand,' Budzinski said. 'But I would do it again in a heartbeat because it is someone's life – no matter how scared you are in that moment.'
The KCFD said a dispatcher helped the Kate's Kitchen crew stay calm, while Rueter stayed on the line until emergency crews got to the restaurant.
'They responded within minutes, but those minutes felt like forever when you're trying to save a life,' Rueter said.
That afternoon, at the Hy-Vee off Barry Road, another person went into cardiac arrest.
Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said employees jumped into action and began performing CPR. They also applied an AED.
'It's crucial; it's not like it is in the movies,' Hopkins said. 'Your chance of survival outside of a hospital is less than 10%—it's closer to 5%. That increases with fast CPR starting and AED application.
'The sooner you can start CPR and AED, the better.'
He said the people who took action helped emergency responders save those people's lives.
'I'm not sure the names of the individuals who jumped in yesterday, but the families of these patients owe them a big hug,' Hopkins said.
Rueter said she took CPR classes in high school, and Budzinski said she's CPR certified.
They are encouraging everyone to get trained.
'Get CPR certified, and 911 is your best friend in those moments,' Budzinski said.
'It saved a life. I don't feel like a hero. It was actually one of the scariest 20 minutes of my life, but I'm really grateful he's okay.'
Family members of the man who collapsed stopped by the restaurant to say thank you and snap a photo of the staff.
'They took a picture with us and said 'we've got to show him back at the hospital' and 'he's going to love to see you guys,'' Rueter said. 'I would want them to do it for my family members.'
Hopkins said both people were conscious and talking when they got to the hospital. They're expected to make full recoveries.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man who investigators say fired shots from a car that killed a , more than two years ago has pleaded guilty to three charges, including second-degree murder. Lakevis Sloan, 22, pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated assault and aggravated endangering a child in a near N. 31st Street and Greeley Avenue on May 3, 2023. Family said three people in masks were in the car and fired nearly three-dozen bullets. Sloan was on the run for more than two weeks after the shooting and was who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting when they got off a bus in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Family told FOX4 during the initial investigation they believed Sloan was likely targeting a family member. The search for Sloan prompted , and led to memorials and vigils for Brown where the boy was mourned as many tried to make sense of what happened. 'He loved karate. He loved motorcycles. He loved making sure that his family was OK,' Shawna Davis-Scott, Sir's great aunt, . KCKPD detectives watched surveillance video of the shooting captured by a nearby homeowner's camera. Court documents say video showed one of the suspects limping away from the scene. Detectives also saw one of the suspects wore unique black-and-white Jordan 12s. Armed with that evidence, Kansas City, Missouri, gang detectives identified the suspect with a limp as a known gang member who lost his leg when he accidentally shot himself, and had to wear a prosthetic limb. The suspect's social media profile had a picture of him wearing the same shoes. Missouri counties denied state aid for tornado damage The investigation also led to an , who was 18 years old at the time, and was accused changing her story regarding the car used in the murder. Detectives said she made a call to someone after her interview, and even though she tried speaking Pig Latin to disguise her message, investigators determined she told the person on the other end of the line: 'Yes, they know everything,' and 'It's on video and everything,' and 'They know y'all was there.' A plea hearing for Sloan took place Friday morning in Wyandotte County District Court. Sloan faces more than 56 years in prison as a result of his guilty pleas, but court documents say that he and his lawyer will argue for a sentence between 15 and 26 years. FOX4 has asked when Sloan's sentencing date is scheduled. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Exploring the history of Clinton
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — FOX4 took our first of the year to Clinton, a town located in Henry County, 90 minutes from downtown Kansas City. First platted in the 1830s, Clinton was a popular pathway for pioneers heading west. The town's railways brought in more visitors and boosted local businesses. Missouri counties denied state aid for tornado damage However, Clinton wasn't officially incorporated as a town until the late 1870s. Developments, including water, electricity, and roads, did not emerge until the 1880s-90s. In 2007, Clinton added the downtown square to the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, the square has been the site of three known tragic events. In 1876, a fire tore through several budlings. Iconic KCK burger drive-in reopens under new ownership In 1946, an explosion at a refrigerator store caused severe damage to the south side of the square, and in June of 2006, the 'Elk's Lodge' located on the square collapsed. The leader of the lodge, Tony Komer, was killed in the incident. In both the good and bad moments, Clinton residents say preserving history is essential. Residents hope that you will take a look at the town's rich history the next time you visit. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
