Wimborne five unbeaten with comeback win at Chertsey

Yahoo06-03-2025

WIMBORNE went to five games unbeaten with a 2-1 win on their first visit to Chertsey in the Southern League Premier South.
The Magpies trailed at half time but second half goals from Will Fletcher and Matty Burrows brought the three points back to Dorset.
Tim Sills named an unchanged side from that which beat Frome, as the hosts made more of the early running, shooting over the bar and keeper Cam Plain catching well from a free kick in the opening minutes.
Plain caught again from a strike from Chertsey dangerman Jack Mazzone, as Wimborne weathered the early storm and threatened themselves, Burrows testing keeper Strizovic and a corner causing some chaos before the hosts scrambled clear.
Strizovic saved well from a Fletcher effort before Harvey Wright was inches away from the opener.
But Chertsey opened the scoring just after the half an hour mark, Toby Little's free kick from just outside the box finding the back of the net via a deflection.
Wimborne weren't able to find an equaliser before the interval but drew themselves level just two minutes after the break.
Burrows put a low cross into the box from the right, Fletcher meeting it and blasting the ball home from 10 yards.
At 1-1, both sides sought the lead again, but it was the visitors who would hit the front on 72 minutes.
Fletcher and Burrows were again involved, the former controlling Sam Jackson's pass in the centre circle and driving towards the goal, getting a shot off that was saved by Strizovic.
Burrows was the quickest to react and fired into the empty net to hand Wimborne the lead.
Chertsey sought an equaliser, Plain catching well under pressure before Conor Lee fired a 35-yard free kick wide in the final minute of six added minutes.
The three points sees Wimborne rise to 11th in the table after five games unbeaten and back-to-back wins.

Fletcher leaves Wrexham ‘not by choice' as ambitious team rebuilds for life in Championship

WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — Wrexham continued its squad reconstruction ahead of a season in the second-tier Championship by releasing one of its most renowned players — against his will. Steven Fletcher, a former Premier League player who scored some crucial goals to help Wrexham earn a third straight promotion , took to social media to say he'd be leaving the ambitious Welsh club. 'It's with a heavy heart, and not by choice, that I unfortunately have to announce my departure from what I can only describe as the most magical club I have ever played at!' Fletcher posted on Instagram . The 38-year-old striker said he fell back in love with soccer by joining Wrexham, a club whose notoriety has rocketed since being bought by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and becoming the subject of a fly-on-the-wall documentary — 'Welcome to Wrexham.' 'In my 22 years of stepping onto a pitch, I have never experienced anything like this club,' the former Scotland international wrote. 'To my team mates — you are family!' he added. 'I have never experienced a dressing room like it in my career, and I can't believe I don't get to walk in there every day next season.' Fletcher finished a long message by thanking Reynolds and McElhenney for the opportunity to play for Wrexham. Wrexham will need to improve the quality of its squad after rising to the second tier, a level the club hasn't played since the 1980s and just one more promotion away from the Premier League. Another striker who might be leaving is Paul Mullin , a star player in previous promotion campaigns but who was overlooked by Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson for much of the second half of the season. ___ AP soccer:

Laurie Daley drops big hint on Blues squad as Terrell May labelled a 'must-pick'

League great Bryan Fletcher insists Terrell May has to be picked for the Blues in State of Origin, with NSW coach Laurie Daley refusing to guarantee a spot for incumbent NSW captain, Jake Trbojevic. Tigers workhorse May has been arguably the buy of the season for Benji Marshall's side and currently sits second on the Dally M leaderboard after another strong showing in Sunday's golden point win over Cronulla. May has made a whopping 39 tackles and run for 181 metres on average across his eight games so far this season, but it's his incredible workrate and defence that Fletcher believes makes him tailor-made for Origin. May has averaged 72 minutes per game this season, which is almost unheard of for an NRL prop. But it's the defensive ability of May that Fletcher believes makes him a must-pick for Daley and the Blues. The 25-year-old has only missed five tackles from a total 319 attempts, registering an incredible 98.4 per cent tackle efficiency in 2025 that will surely make Daley sit up and take notice. 'He has to have done enough (to play Origin),' Fletcher said on SEN radio. 'Probably the biggest thing for him is that he doesn't miss tackles. We can look at his running metres and offloads but in Origin you have to look at defence because we're not going to score many points and that's why it's so important to not miss tackles and make ineffective tackles. 'I don't know how he can sustain this... I know he's only a young kid so maybe Benji's (Marshall) thinking he doesn't need a rest. Maybe when he starts getting a couple of niggling injuries but right now, he doesn't look tired.' Tigers coach Marshall even joked after the victory over the Sharks that May 'blew up' at him for giving the forward a five-minute spell during the match, showing May's appetite for big minutes. Him And Haas First Picked — 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 🏰 (@newycastrians) April 28, 2025 Just about first picked — Brad (@bradfogarty101) April 28, 2025 Tigers… courageous!Terrell May must play origin — kbigglesy⚜️ (@socialarchismx) April 27, 2025 Fellow prop Payne Haas will likely be one of the first names picked for Daley's Blues side, and many would expect May to be named alongside the Broncos wrecking ball as the other starting prop for NSW. Max King has been excellent for the Bulldogs and is vying to make his Origin debut, while fellow middle forwards Spencer Leniu and Mitch Barnett will be among those jostling for an interchange role. It could spell bad news for incumbent Blues captain Trbojevic, who led NSW to Origin glory last year, despite playing limited minutes in all three games. Like May, the oldest Trbojevic brother is one of the best defensive middle forwards in the game but does not offer much of a threat in attack and only averages 63 run metres per game. Many critics argued that Manly's attack looked more dynamic in last week's win against Penrith without Trbojevic, who was sidelined due to concussion protocols. RELATED: Luai rejects ugly claim about Galvin as Tigers young gun breaks silence Papenhuyzen 'prime target' for newest team amid potential $2m first And Daley said despite leading the Blues to an Origin series win in 2024, it does not necessarily mean Trbojevic will feature for NSW this year. "It doesn't guarantee you, no," Daley told 9News on Monday night. "I know Jake didn't play a lot of minutes last year, but talking to everyone inside the group and talking to the staff, he was a big part of keeping that squad together. "Like everyone, you've got to look and see how they are performing. Jake I've got a huge amount of respect for, he's one of the few players that I've coached before and I know how passionate he is about NSW. "He missed last weekend's game and they (Manly) have got the bye this week, but like everyone, there's still a couple of games to go. The thing I know with class players is that they can rise to the challenge... I expect Jake to play his best football over the next couple of games." Daley will also have some big decisions to make around the Blues' Origin contingent from the Panthers, who are languishing at the bottom of the ladder. Dylan Edwards and Nathan Cleary are both facing calls to be axed, with many insisting Daley should stick with halves pair Mitch Moses and Jarome Luai, who starred in last year's series victory after striking up a superb partnership. "Those are the tough decisions I want to have," Daley added. "If we're leaving those types of players out, we've got a really good squad. It's gonna be a difficult conversation for whoever misses out, but that's the job." The squads for Game 1 of the Origin series at Suncorp Stadium are set to be announced after round 11.
