Mavs deny Jason Kidd request, latest to turn down Knicks in coaching search | Reports Show Caption Hide Caption Six names to replace Tom Thibodeau for the Knicks new head coach Who should replace Tom Thibodeau now that the Knicks have decided to move away from their head coach? The For The Hoops crew picks six names here. The New York Knicks moved swiftly in making the controversial decision to fire coach Tom Thibodeau after losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Finding his replacement is proving to be more difficult, and perhaps harder than anybody inside Madison Square Garden thought. The Knicks have sought permission to speak with at least three sitting NBA head coaches in recent days and been turned down by every team currently employing them, according to multiple reports. ESPN reported Wednesday that Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks became the latest coach New York sought permission to speak with only to be denied by the Mavericks. The Knicks have also tried to interview Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets since firing Thibodeau on June 3, according to multiple reports. ANALYSIS: Tyrese Haliburton going to film school to decode Thunder's defense New York is coming off its first conference finals appearance in 25 years under Thibodeau, who spent five seasons with the Knicks. His firing came less than a year after he signed a three-year contract extension that hadn't even started yet. The Knicks were the fifth NBA head coach opening this offseason and the only available job at the moment. Three openings were filled when the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets each elected to elevate their interim coach from the end of the 2024-25 NBA season. The Phoenix Suns recently hired former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott to be its new coach. Kidd, 52, led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals and has five playoff appearances over nine seasons as an NBA head coach with the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas. He was also an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the 2020 NBA championship. Finch, 55, just took the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row. Udoka, 47, spearheaded the Boston Celtics when they went to the 2022 NBA Finals before serving a one-year suspension due to multiple violations of team policy. He was hired by Houston ahead of the 2023-24 season and has quickly turned the Rockets into a Western Conference contender in his two seasons there. Thibodeau, 67, previously served as the head coach for the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. His .579 career winning percentage is the highest by any coach without an NBA Finals appearance (minimum 300 games coached), according to ESPN. He wrote a thank you letter to Knicks fans that was posted to social media and ran as a full-page ad in Wednesday's New York Times.

Ex-Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau takes out full-page ad in New York Times thanking organization, fans
Former New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is thanking fans for their support following his surprising firing last week. Thibodeau, who was let go after the six-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, bought a full-page ad in The New York Times, expressing his admiration for the city, franchise and fans for their support during his run as head coach, which started prior to the 2020-21 season. "To the best city in the world with the best fans in the world: Thank you," Thibodeau wrote. "When I was hired in 2020, I said this was my dream job. I am grateful that dream became a reality. Thank you to our players and coaching staff who gave everything they had, and to everyone who makes this franchise special. I am proud of everything we accomplished together, including four playoff appearances and this year's run to the Eastern Conference finals -- our first in 25 years. "And to the fans, thank you for believing in me and embracing me from day one. Watching you support our team, and seeing the Garden ignite with that incomparable Knicks energy, is something I'll never forget." The 67-year-old's ouster was a shock to many Knicks fans and NBA insiders because he guided the team to its first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years, four playoff appearances overall, a 226-174 regular season record and 24 postseason wins during his five seasons as head coach. Latest on Knicks' search for their next head coach The Knicks coaching job is considered a premier position across the NBA, but New York's front office is finding out that replacing Thibodeau may be more difficult than it first thought. According to the Knicks' desire to interview Dallas head coach Jason Kidd, who is under contract, was denied by the Mavericks. Other potential candidates have either been removed by their current teams or removed themselves from consideration, according to various news outlets. The Knicks asked to interview Houston coach Ime Udoka, but were denied by the Rockets, and requested a meeting with Minnesota head coach Chris Finch, but were denied by the Timberwolves, both according to ESPN. Jay Wright, the former national championship-winning coach at Villanova who coached current Knicks Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, is said to not be interested in the position, reported. Dan Hurley, who won back-to-back national titles at UConn in 2023 and 2024, was recently asked about the Knicks job, but indicated he's not interested, reported.

Knicks have interest in trading for Kevin Durant: report
The Knicks, who are searching for a head coach to replace the fired Tom Thibodeau, are about to embark on an offseason where they try to add the finishing pieces to a roster that just finished two games shy of reaching the NBA Finals. Could one of those pieces be a former MVP and all-time great? Advertisement According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, "the Knicks are definitely a team that is gonna have some interest in Kevin Durant. There are going to be a handful of them." As far as what it would take for the Knicks to pry KD from the Suns? "The way the Knicks get this done is Karl-Anthony Towns," Windhorst said. "It has to do with the trade rules. It has to do with stuff like that. The Knicks would have to trade three rotation players otherwise. Just keep that in mind when you dream of your Knicks trades." Durant, who will turn 37 in September, has one year left on his contract -- with a cap hit of $54.7 million during the 2025-26 season. Advertisement He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after next season. Towns, 29, is under contract for three more seasons. He has a cap hit of $53.1 million next season. That hit escalates to $57 million in 2026-27, and $61 million in 2027-28. New York trading three seasons of Towns for one season of Durant would seem odd, unless they have a desire to clear Towns' contract off their books. Durant, while nearing the tail end of his career, is still a dynamic player. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 62 games this season for the Suns.
