Israel's ambassador is ejected from an African Union event
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Israel 's ambassador to Ethiopia was ejected from an African Union event this week and has described it as outrageous.
An Israeli official on Wednesday told The Associated Press the ejection from the annual event commemorating the 1994 Rwanda genocide was at the request of AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to a journalist.
'The new African Union Commission chairperson chose to introduce anti-Israel political elements,' the ambassador, Avraham Nigusse, asserted Tuesday on social media. It 'reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of the histories of both the Rwandan and Jewish peoples,' he added, saying he had been invited by Rwanda.
The spokesperson for Youssouf, a former foreign minister of Djibouti, did not respond to requests for comment. Youssouf started his four-year AU term in February.
A diplomat at the AU on Wednesday said Israel's ambassador was removed because they no longer had observer status at the continental body based in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.
Israel regained observer status at the AU in 2021, two decades after it was revoked over its conflict with the Palestinians, as Jerusalem sought wider ties with African nations. However, the observer status was suspended again in 2023 pending review by a committee of African heads of state.
They have yet to deliver a verdict. In 2023, a senior Israeli diplomat was evicted from the AU's annual summit for not having proper accreditation.
The pan-African body has strong ties to the Palestinians, often inviting their leaders to address major gatherings.
Israel last month shattered a ceasefire and renewed its military offensive in Gaza. The territory's Health Ministry says more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war with Hamas started with the militant group's Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
South Africa, a prominent AU member, has brought a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing it of genocide during its military operations in Gaza. Israel has denied the allegations and called them outrageous.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Every venue for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles will be within a 35-mile radius, and athletes will be housed together, on the UCLA campus, for the first time since the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. LA28 announced an updated venue plan Tuesday following approval from the International Paralympic Committee's governing board. The Paralympics will run Aug. 15-27, 2028, about two weeks after the the Los Angeles Olympics end. The majority of sports will be held in Los Angeles, with the downtown and Exposition Park sites serving as the main competition hubs. The Los Angeles Convention Center will host boccia, para judo, para table tennis, para taekwondo and wheelchair fencing. Adjacent to the Convention Center, Arena will host wheelchair basketball. Across the street, Peacock Theater will host goalball in an acoustically optimized setting. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will host para track and field, as well as the closing ceremony. The nearby Galen Center will host wheelchair rugby and para badminton. Venice Beach on the city's westside will be the site of para triathlon and the starting point of the marathon. The Dignity Health Sports Park complex in Carson will host para archery, wheelchair tennis and para track cycling in the velodrome. Climbing will make its Paralympic debut in 2028, with four men's and four women's events in the parking lot of the Long Beach Convention Center. Para swimming will be on the same site in a temporary pool. Sport shooting will be inside the convention center at a temporary range. Long Beach Arena will host sitting volleyball. A temporary arena at Alamitos Beach along the Pacific Ocean will be the site of blind football. Para rowing and para canoe-sprint events will be held at Marine Stadium. The Washington Post admitted Tuesday that a claim in its recent report that Israeli soldiers killed dozens of civilians in Gaza could not be verified. The outlet shared a post on X stating it had updated its Sunday article to reflect that it could not verify that Israeli troops killed around 30 civilians near a US aid site in Gaza. The previous version of the piece reported that the Israeli military had committed the killings. Trump Goes All In Blaming Biden For ‘Illegal' Colorado Terror Suspect
Donald Trump joined his Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller in blaming Joe Biden's immigration policies for allowing an alleged 'illegal alien' suspected of carrying out a terror attack in Colorado into the country. A man used a flamethrower and Molotov cocktails to set people on fire on Sunday while they were holding a Jewish community event in support of the hostages in Gaza. At least eight people were injured. Police identified the suspect in the attack as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, the 45-year-old Egyptian man arrested at the scene. Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday that the suspect 'came in through Biden's ridiculous Open Border Policy' and the attack was 'another example of why we must keep our Borders SECURE, and deport Illegal, Anti-American Radicals from our Homeland.' The White House also released a statement. 'The suspect in the antisemitic Colorado terrorist attack, accused of setting elderly women on fire while yelling 'FREE PALESTINE,' is an illegal alien who exploited our immigration system to violently attack American citizens,' said White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson in a statement. 'President Trump will never stop fighting to keep Americans safe – his work to secure our border, end the abuse of our immigration system enabled by Joe Biden, and deport dangerous illegals is absolutely critical to our national security,' she continued. The suspect was in the country illegally, according to Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. Soliman entered the U.S. in August 2022 on a tourist visa that expired in February 2023. The following month, in September 2022, he filed for asylum. Members of the Trump administration have been pointing to the arrest as they tout the president's effort to remove immigrants in the country illegally. Late Sunday, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller also tweeted that the attack was committed by an 'illegal alien.' 'He was granted a tourist visa by the Biden Administration and then he illegally overstayed that visa. In response, the Biden Administration gave him a work permit,' Miller posted on X. 'Suicidal migration must be fully reversed.' Soliman is accused of shouting 'Free Palestine' and attacking the demonstrators using a makeshift flamethrower and other incendiary devices as they gathered at an outdoor mall. Boulder police released a mugshot of the suspect with what appeared to be a bandage on the side of his head on Monday. He was booked into the county jail on Sunday night on multiple felony counts, including first-degree murder, but police said on Monday that no victims died. Four women and four men were injured in the attack, with ages ranging from 52 to 88. One of the victim's injuries are critical. The FBI is investigating the attack as a targeted act of terrorism.
