'I'm Eurovision's number one fan - but I dont want UK to win'
Eurovision's number one fan Kevin Sherwin, from Aberdeen, spends a fortune on travelling across Europe to watch the show live every year and says it's worth every penny
Taxi driver Kevin Sherwin claims to be Eurovision's number one fan – spending £50K travelling to destinations across Europe during the 30 years he's been watching the show live. Speaking from Basel, Switzerland, where he's watching his 26th live contest, he confesses that he hopes the UK fails to win the Saturday night final.
Kevin, 63, of Aberdeen, says: 'I love going to wave the Union flag and support the UK, but it would be a terrible disappointment if we actually won – I'd miss out on my yearly holiday. It would be nice if we came second, but I'm really rooting for Iceland or Albania – I've travelled about 50,000 miles for Eurovision, but I've never been there.'
Ever since he sang along to Cliff Richard singing Congratulations in 1968 when he was four, Kevin - who lives with his partner who also likes the contest but is not as big a fan - he's loved Eurovision. Longing to watch in person, only invited guests and production staff had access in the 1970s and 80s. So, in 1994, seeing an advert on Ceefax, offering tickets to see Eurovision in Dublin for £300, he snapped one up.
'It was an iconic performance to be at,' he recalls. 'I'd had to rent a dinner jacket, it was very formal, but it was the year that Riverdance performed in the interval, so I can say I was at the world premiere of that. It just blew me away, and I knew I had to keep going back. For me, Eurovision is like Christmas. There's a huge lead up to it all year, and then a few days before the contest, all the fans start to arrive – it's like seeing my Eurovision family for the holidays.
'There's such a buzz in the air and it's like being in a little cocoon – nothing can bring us down. Yes, it always costs a lot of money, but I live quite frugally the rest of the year, and Eurovision is my little splurge. It's much better than sitting on a beach somewhere."
Kevin's only missed four live performances since 1994 – after being unable to get tickets between 1996 and 2000. These days, he books hotel rooms up to a year in advance - often in multiple cities - to avoid disappointment. 'When the winner is revealed, I start looking to book accommodation straight away,' he says. 'There are usually two or three possible cities that it could be held in, so I book a refundable hotel room in each of them.
"This time, I made sure I had accommodation in Basel, Geneva and Zurich. You can usually work out which week the competition will be held, depending on the champions league final. But I've been known to book three hotels for three different weeks to make sure I get a spot. Sometimes this can mean getting them before the prices go up too high.'
Regularly staying in the same hotels as performers, he's shared a breakfast table with many UK singers - befriending performers from around the world. 'I met Terry Wogan several times, who was a lovely man, so kind and genuine with the fans,' he says. 'I've met Graham Norton too, who is also lovely. People ask me which commentary style I prefer, but I have to tell them that I've never actually heard the commentary – I'm always at the event and I never watch it on TV.
'Most of the singers are lovely too, but there are a few who are real divas. They refuse to come down and eat with other people, and have everything ordered to their room.' And Kevin spends the rest of the year trying to spread his love for Eurovision. 'I always like to have Eurovision tunes playing in my taxi, and I try to shoehorn it into conversation,' he admits.
'I've always got a little snippet of information to share with people, and they usually love chatting about Eurovision – even if they do roll their eyes to start with. It really does bring people together, even if that's because they hate it – it's always a talking point.'

TV teen who needed French polisher in Yellow Pages ad unrecognisable 34 years on
One of the best-remembered ads for the Yellow Pages phone directory featured a floppy-haired teenager waking up to the aftermath of party he'd thrown while his parents were away Before the rise of the internet, we had the Yellow Pages, a comprehensive directory of local businesses – from advice centres to zoos – all vying for your custom, packaged in a hefty, distinctively coloured phone book. In the 1990s, the Reading-based company became famous for its unforgettable TV adverts, each new release bringing a buzz of anticipation akin to the unveiling of a new John Lewis Christmas advert today. These TV commercials even turned their stars into temporary celebrities, long before the era of reality TV, and gave birth to several catchphrases. Anyone around at the time will easily remember the Yellow Pages ad featuring elderly man searching for a book titled Fly Fishing by J R Hartley, with the surprising twist that it was Mr Hartley himself seeking his old publication. There was also the cheeky young lad standing on a stack of Yellow Pages to sneak a kiss under the Christmas mistletoe. And in 2003, Cold Feet actor James Nesbitt was enlisted to rejuvenate the brand, with the actor channelling his character Adam's hapless persona from the show, using the Yellow Pages to navigate tricky situations. But one of the most memorable adverts, first aired in 1991, featured a shaggy-haired teenager waking up on his living room floor after hosting a house party while his parents were away. Venturing into a bedroom, he stumbles upon a stranger on the bed, exclaiming: "Wake up! My parents fly back today," as a small group hastily tidies up the house. Then after his abject horror at noticing a scratch on a wooden table, he turns to the reliable Yellow Pages to find a solution. "Hello, French polishers?" he enquires over the phone, adding: "It's just possible you could save my life." The scratch is skilfully polished away in the nick of time and everything seems fine, until the final moment when the unfortunate lad realises that someone has doodled a beard and glasses onto a woman on one of the family's treasured paintings. The teenager in the advert was portrayed by Nottingham actor Simon Schatzberger, who later played Adrian Mole in a stage production in London's West End, and has since appeared as a Woody Allen-esque character in a stand-up comedy show. Now aged 57, he's also had a stint as David Klarfeld on the BBC soap Doctors and made appearances in EastEnders as a Rabbi, both in December 2018 and again in January 2019. His other television roles include Band Of Brothers, Daniel Deronda and Father Brown. In 2019, Yellow Pages announced it would cease printing its iconic directories, after more than half a century. The final editions of the once-indispensable guide were delivered in Brighton, the city where the directory's original copies were distributed. It boasted 104 editions, each customised to specific areas of the UK, with nearly 23 million copies circulated each year. And in 2023, a perfume was launched that even smelled like Yellow Pages, proving the brand lives on... sort of.

The Les Miserables star kept covered in a brown suede jacket, while his date wore a cuddly grey cardigan. He later gave her his jacket to shield her from the cold as they ate outside. The new romance comes after Alfie briefly dated Ted Lasso icon Hannah Waddingham two years ago. The Sun exclusively revealed that the pair began going on dates in late 2022, with Hannah even managing to evade photographers to sneak him into Eurovision, which she hosted six months later in 2023. However, the source revealed the pair 'fizzled out' shortly afterwards, but remained on good terms despite not working out as a couple. Alfie has been back on the dating scene since August 2020, when he announced he had split from his wife of 16 years, Sarah. Together, the couple share two children, 20-year-old Grace and 16-year-old Alfred. In a statement released by his representatives at the time, Alfie said: 'After speculation about my marriage to Sarah ending, I can confirm that we have separated. 'I have nothing but love and respect for Sarah who's been an incredible partner and an amazing mother to our two beautiful children and everything is very amicable.' Real Full Monty viewers complain their 'ears are bleeding' as Alfie Boe tackles rock classic Alfie later admitted that he went to a 'dark place' after his marriage breakdown, revealing on Freeze The Fear with Wim Hof that he spent time in a facility for depression and 'missed what he had' with his wife. Following the split, Alfie went on to date Liv Knight-Butler, a fashion blogger 21 years his junior, and threw himself into work alongside longtime pal and collaborator, Michael Ball.
