Iranian UN Mission reaffirms nuclear stance amid tensions

Shafaq Newsa day ago

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iran's mission to the United Nations reaffirmed that diplomacy instead of military strength is the only viable path forward.
In a statement released following news of American regional actions and preparations to evacuate embassies, the Iranian mission reiterated Tehran's position on nuclear weapons, stating, 'Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon,' and warned that 'the US militarism only fuels instability.'
The mission also claimed that 'the legacy of US Central Command in enabling Israel's crimes strips it of any credibility on peace or non-proliferation.'
Threats of 'overwhelming force' won't change facts:Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon, and U.S. militarism only fuels instability.CENTCOM's legacy of fueling regional instability, through arming aggressors and enabling Israeli crimes, strips it of any credibility to speak on…

Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh warned that Tehran would target US bases in the region if nuclear talks failed or a conflict erupted with Washington.
Nasirzadeh told reporters that Iran still hoped for positive results from talks with the United States, but remained prepared to respond. 'If conflict is imposed on us, the opponent's losses will certainly exceed ours,' he stated.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a notice warning vessels in the region of heightened tensions that could lead to increased military activity impacting seafarers directly.
The advisory urged caution in the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz. Although it did not name Iran, those waterways have previously been the site of Iranian ship seizures and attacks.

Israel on high alert after launching strikes on Iran

Shafaq News/ The Israeli military has declared a nationwide state of emergency and raised alert levels across the country, anticipating a potential Iranian retaliation following the launch of Operation Rising Lion, a wide-scale airstrike targeting key sites in Iran. According to the Israeli military, dozens of fighter jets carried out a preemptive strike deep inside Iranian territory, marking the beginning of what the army described as a campaign to neutralize Iran's strategic threat. Israeli Army Radio quoted a military source warning that a possible Iranian response could come within hours, potentially involving the launch of hundreds of ballistic missiles toward Israeli territory. As air raid sirens sounded across several cities, Defense Minister Israel Katz declared a state of emergency nationwide, stating the decision was taken in response to what he called Israel's "preventive action" against Iran.

Oil jumps more than 7% as Israel strikes Iran, rattling investors

Shafaq News/ Oil prices jumped more than 7% on Friday, hitting their highest in months after Israel said it struck Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East and raising worries about disrupted oil supplies. Brent crude futures rose $5.29, or 7.63%, to $74.65 a barrel by 0142 GMT after hitting an intraday high of $75.32, the highest since April 2. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $5.38, or 7.91%, at $73.42 a barrel after hitting a high of $74.35, the loftiest since February 3. Israel said early on Friday that it struck Iran, and Iranian media said explosions were heard in Tehran as tensions mounted over U.S. efforts to win Iran's agreement to halt production of material for an atomic bomb. "The Israeli attack on Iran has heightened the risk premium further," MST Marquee senior energy analyst Saul Kavonic said. "The conflict would need to escalate to the point of Iranian retaliation on oil infrastructure in the region before oil supply is actually materially impacted," he said, adding that Iran could hinder up to 20 million barrels per day of oil supply via attacks on infrastructure or limiting passage through the Strait of Hormuz in an extreme scenario. Israel's strikes on Iran are aimed at hurting its nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile factories and many of its military capabilities, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday called Israel's strikes against Iran a "unilateral action" and said Washington was not involved while also urging Tehran not to target U.S. interests or personnel in the region. "Iran has announced an emergency and is preparing to retaliate, which raises the risk of not just disruptions but of contagion in other neighbouring oil producing nations too," said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova. "Although Trump has shown reluctance to participate, U.S. involvement could further raise concerns." In other markets, stocks dived in early Asian trade, led by a selloff in U.S. futures, while investors scurried to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said the alarming escalation is a blow to risk sentiment in financial markets. "While we await further news and a potential response from Iran, we are likely to see a further deterioration in risk sentiment as traders cut risk-seeking positions ahead of the weekend," he added.

Netanyahu defends Iran strikes: 'Never Again Is Now'

Shafaq News/ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a televised address early Friday, hours after the Israeli Army launched Operation Rising Lion, a coordinated airstrike campaign on Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure. Netanyahu described the operation as a ' targeted military initiative ' aimed at dismantling what he called a 'clear and present danger' posed by Iran's nuclear weapons program and its ballistic missile capabilities. 'We have struck at the heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment and weaponization programs,' Netanyahu declared. He confirmed that the Army targeted the Natanz nuclear facility, senior nuclear scientists, and key components of Iran's missile program. According to him, Iran had produced enough highly enriched uranium for nine nuclear bombs and was advancing rapidly toward weaponization. 'Eighty years ago, the Jewish people were victims of a Holocaust. Today, the Jewish state refuses to be a victim again—especially not at the hands of the Iranian regime,' he said. Netanyahu also addressed Iran's regional role, stating that Israel's military action not only defends its own people but also protects Arab neighbors and helps roll back Iranian influence across the region. He credited Israel's actions with weakening Hezbollah, destabilizing Iran's proxies in Syria and Yemen, and fostering political change in Lebanon and Syria. 'Our fight is not with the people of Iran,' he emphasized. 'It is with the brutal dictatorship that has oppressed them for 46 years.' Warning of the broader global threat, Netanyahu said Iran's growing missile range could eventually threaten Europe and the United States. He reaffirmed Israel's resolve to prevent nuclear proliferation in enemy hands and thanked US President Donald Trump for his 'leadership in confronting Iran's nuclear ambitions.' 'When enemies vow to destroy you—believe them,' Netanyahu said. 'Never again is now.' Earlier on Friday, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iranian military targets in what it said was a preemptive strike to neutralize imminent threats. According to Israeli and Western media, senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and nuclear scientists were among those targeted. Explosions were reported across Tehran, and Iranian officials accused Israel of striking civilian areas.
