Weight loss is a challenging issue for many in the UK, and it's become more pressing for those grappling with increased belly fat. A recent 2024 study revealed that over 40% of Brits are actively trying to slim down.
In a rather alarming statistic provided by click2pharmacy, one in four children in England is on a diet, "indicating that weight management is a priority across various age groups."
People often resort to trendy diets like keto or Atkins, which focus on a low-carbohydrate intake.
Nonetheless, Bupa health specialists have called out these fad diets as only effective short-term solutions. They commented: "Cutting out carbohydrates means people usually don't get enough fibre. This can have a long-term effect on your gut health and may also increase your risk of heart problems."
They advise that a better alternative might be to opt for complex carbs, suggesting: "Instead of cutting out carbohydrates altogether, you could switch to complex carbs such as brown rice, brown bread, and wholemeal pasta.", reports Surrey Live.
However, there is one superfood that has become a popular choice in weight-loss diets and can be simply added to a glass of water: chia seeds.
What are Chia seeds, and how do they aid in weight loss?
Chia seeds are small edible seeds that are oval and grey in colour with black and white spots. The seeds are packed with fibre, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are key players in weight management.
"One of the great things about chia seeds is that they swell up when mixed with liquid, creating a gel-like texture that helps you stay full for longer," reported Healthera.
By taking two tablespoons of chia seeds, this equates to almost 10 grams of fibre. That's around 40 per cent of the recommended daily intake.
Experts at Healthline shared that diets high in fibre have been linked to weight loss. According to 2015 research, eating 30 grams of fibre daily may help you lose as much weight as if you followed a more complicated diet.
Adding chia seeds to water
When you eat chia seeds, the soluble fibre soaks up water and expands in your stomach, helping you feel full longer. While chia seeds cannot single-handedly burn belly fat, adding chia seed water to a balanced diet can help by increasing digestion, making you feel less hungry and offering long-lasting energy to support exercise.

Surgeons' issue serious health warning to those who wash bedding under 60 degrees
An eye surgeon is warning Brits of a huge rise in a health condition that causes your eyes to swell and become inflamed. With nicer weather on the horizon, many of us will be wanting to chuck our bedding out on the line to dry in the warm heat. While washing your bedding is a common occurrence for most people, experts are now saying that Brits should be careful about what heat they are washing their bedding on. Eye surgeons have issued a serious warning to anyone who washes their bedding at a temperature lower than 60 degrees. This is due to a significant rise in cases of demodex blepharitis, which is an eye condition caused by a type of parasite. One surgeon has reported a "huge increase" in cases, which is becoming a massive issue for those living in the UK, reports the Express. As a result, people are being urged to make sure they are washing their bedding at 60 degrees at least Demodox blepharitis is caused by dust mites that enter into a person's eyes at night while they are in bed. This can lead to inflammation, redness and swelling. However, by simply putting your washing on a higher temperature, this condition can easily be prevented. Eye surgeon Julian Stevens said: "This is a massive issue. Me and my colleagues are seeing more and more people at the clinic for demodex and optometrists on the high street are also seeing a huge increase." He believes this increase is due to more people washing their bedding at lower temperatures, thus unknowingly allowing the mites to survive. He added: "And the reason is that, whereas our parents used to wash at 60°C and hotter, everyone's now using low-temperature washes." A study has found that anything above 54 degrees is a "lethal temperature" for the mites, however many people are unaware of this and continue to do their washing at lower temperatures. According to the NHS, blepharitis is a condition that involves the eyelids becoming itchy and swollen. Thankfully it is not often a serious condition and can be treated by washing the eyelids. The symptoms of the condition can include sore and itchy eyelids, a gritty feeling, flakes or crusts at the base of the lashes, and washing up with your eyelids stuck together. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you should clean your eyelids twice a day, reducing to once when the condition lessens. However, the NHS urges that you should persist with cleaning your eyes even when the symptoms subside. On top of this, people are cautioned not to wear contact lenses or use eye makeup, such as mascara and eyeliner, when experiencing symptoms. Healthline states that there are two types of Demodex mites - folliculorum and brevis. The former is more common and they reside in your hair follicles and consume skin cells. However, the American Academy of Ophthalmology does state that while it may feel uncomfortable to know these mites are on your skin, the mites have "long been considered a friendly bystander of normal skin". The problems instead begin when they excessively multiply, which the academy says can lead to chronic blepharitis and other eye problems. One treatment for Demodex mites is over-the-counter remedies that include low concentrations of tea tree oil or hypochlorous-based acid, which can come in the form of scrubs, sprays or wipes. However, the Centers for Dry Eye does caution that individuals should always dilute the tea tree oil before use, as well as perform a patch test on a small area of skin. Users should also avoid direct contact with the eye and seek advice from an ophthalmologist. Other advice includes keeping good eyelid hygiene, not sharing personal items, changing your eye makeup regularly, eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated. And above all else, keep your bedding clean.

High cholesterol can be a big problem if it goes unchecked, and is often referred to as a 'silent killer' People are often told to make major lifestyle changes when their cholesterol levels spike to dangerous levels. Diet is one of the main areas that people target to naturally combat the condition. High cholesterol has earned the title of a 'silent killer' due to its symptomless nature until a severe heart problem occurs. Dietician Angie Jefferson has shared some natural tips for Brits keen to clear their arteries of the dreaded 'bad' cholesterol to work alongside any prescribed medication. The dietitian spoke about the importance of plant sterols and stanols in stopping cholesterol's harmful effects. She said: "Plant sterols and stanols are similar in size and shape to cholesterol and block some cholesterol absorption from your gut. This gradually reduces the amount of cholesterol in your blood." For those aiming for a sufficient 3g/day dose, she suggests sourcing these compounds from "mini shot-style drinks, fat spreads or yoghurts". You can get affordable versions from Aldi that work out at about 33p each. However, Angie warned that to maintain effective cholesterol management, consistency is key. She explained that the body doesn't store plant sterols and stanols, so a constant source from our diet is required. The dietitian also recommended oats and barley too as, thanks to their soluble fibre beta-glucan, these grains are a natural warrior against the artery-blocking effects of cholesterol, reports Surrey Live. In a chat with The Menopause Exchange, Angie claimed that beta-glucan "hangs on to cholesterol and bile acids during digestion", which assists in reducing cholesterol. She added: "Oats, barley and foods made from these can help lower cholesterol, provided these contain at least 1g of beta-glucan per portion." The expert also suggested a "small handful of nuts and soya as beneficial foods for tackling high cholesterol, explaining: "Research shows that nuts and soya foods, rich in protein and fibre, minerals and plant compounds, can help to support heart health." While meat is a good source of protein, it's also high in saturated fat, which can raise "bad" cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. She advised people to experiment with different plant-based meals using soya mince, edamame beans or tofu to replace 'normal' protein. While dietary changes can significantly aid in managing cholesterol levels, poor eating habits can counteract these benefits. It is vital to also cut down (or completely avoid) foods that increase cholesterol. The NHS advises reducing intake of: Exercise is also key in controlling cholesterol levels. The health service recommends everyone to be active for at least 150 minutes per week.

Disposable vapes ban comes into force - here's everything you need to know
A ban on disposable vapes has come into force in the UK, making it illegal for retailers to sell them both in shops and online. The change in law is aimed at reducing vaping amongst young people, as well as the litter they create. The ban on disposable vapes - also known as single-use vapes - applies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and includes all disposable vapes, whether or not they contain nicotine. Retailers are still allowed to sell reusable vapes. The crackdown follows the soaring use of disposable vapes in schools and a flood of plastic rubbish from the discarding of the devices. What vapes are banned? The government is banning single-use vapes - meaning they either have a battery that cannot be recharged or is not refillable. They are typically thrown away with general waste in black bins or littered rather than recycled. Even when they are recycled, they need to be taken apart by hand, while their batteries are a fire risk to recycling facilities and can leak harmful chemicals into the environment. A reusable vape has a rechargeable battery and a refillable container that holds the vaping e-liquid. Why has the government banned them? The change in law has been brought in to prevent the environmental damage caused by vapes, while addressing health concerns from inhaling nicotine. In 2023, up to five million single-use vapes were estimated to be either littered or thrown away every week in the UK – almost four times as many as the previous year. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said England's vape usage had grown by more than 400% between 2012 and 2023, with 9.1% of Brits now buying and using the products. Figures from the charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) suggest the number of vapers in Great Britain who mainly use single-use devices fell from 30% in 2024 to 24% in 2025, while the use of disposables by 18 to 24-year-old vapers fell from 52% in 2024 to 40% in 2025. Defra said usage among young vapers remained too high, and the ban would 'put an end to their alarming rise in school playgrounds and the avalanche of rubbish flooding the nation's streets'. Circular economy minister Mary Creagh said: 'For too long, single-use vapes have blighted our streets as litter and hooked our children on nicotine. That ends today. 'The Government calls time on these nasty devices.' Who does the ban apply to? The ban applies to all businesses and organisations that sell or supply single-use vapes in the UK. This includes: retailers – such as convenience stores, market stalls, petrol stations, specialist vape shops and supermarkets manufacturers wholesalers importers healthcare settings and stop smoking services Retailers must arrange to recycle any leftover stock of single-use vapes from 1 June 2025. What will happen to retailers that continue to sell them? Rogue traders who continue to sell them risk a fine of £200 in the first instance, followed by an unlimited fine or jail time for repeat offending. How else is the government toughening smoking laws? The separate Tobacco and Vapes Bill, aimed at creating the "first smoke-free generation," is currently working its way through Parliament. The bill includes powers to potentially restrict the packaging, marketing and flavours of e-cigarettes.
