ED raids jeweller, businessman in city in connection with Raipur case

Time of India24-05-2025

Nagpur: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted searches at four locations in the city, including the retail outlet of a jeweller in Itwari and the premises of a local businessman.
The day-long operation concluded without any arrests.
Sources said the searches were linked to findings made during an ongoing ED investigation in Raipur. Officials from both Raipur and Nagpur units of the agency were involved in the operation.
The jeweller whose premises were searched had earlier figured in a gold smuggling case last year, in which the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized a significant quantity of gold being transported by train.
The ED is also reportedly probing a possible hawala angle in the case.
The businessman whose premises were also raided is under scanner for alleged tax evasion. His name surfaced during a previous Income Tax department raid on another Nagpur-based businessman. The tax assessment related to that case is still underway.
The ED's action sent ripples across the city's business circles, triggering a wave of speculation.

A'bad-G'nagar hospitality sector getting bigger

1 2 A hmedabad: The hospitality scene is getting bigger in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar with the twin cities set to add 1,200-plus room keys in five new upcoming premium hotel projects. Currently, the city has at least 6,500 keys in the five-star hotel category. On Thursday, Ahmedabad realty firm AG Group signed a contract with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) for a 150-key Holiday Inn hotel along the New Science City area. This mixed-use project spread over 1.6 million sq ft comprises residential towers and the hotel, with AG Group committing an investment of Rs 200 crore for the hotel alone. Gandhinagar-based Kavyaratna Group too recently signed a contract with Hyatt Hotels Corporation for a new property in GIFT City. Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the hospitality chain is slated to come up with another property in Sanand Industrial Estate. From global chains expanding their presence to strategic locations being tapped for business and leisure travellers, the influx signals growing investor confidence in Gujarat's economic hub. Vikram Bharwad, director of AG Group, said, "We will build a 1.25 lakh sq ft hotel, which will be managed by IHG. Construction will be completed by 2028. We also plan to launch at least five more hotels and resorts in various parts of the country in the years to come." "Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar and GIFT City are developing as attractive hubs for businesses and industrial growth. That apart, being home to the world's largest cricket stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad has hosted iconic tournaments like the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, British rock band Coldplay's live concert, and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The city's stature is rising not just as an industrial and business district but also as a cultural, sports, and events hub, which is bound to drive travellers from across the globe to this city. As a result, hospitality investments are on the rise in this region," said Narendra Somani, president, Hotels and Restaurants' Association (HRA) – Gujarat. IHG is also planning more expansions in the region. Sandip Jain, MD, IHG Group, said, "This will be the third hotel by IHG Hotels and Resorts in Ahmedabad. The city has seen growing demand from guests and corporates with increasing business activities and growing income. We currently have around 240 rooms in two hotel brands in the city, and this contract will add around 150 rooms." Sources confirmed that Marriott International's luxury hotel brand, St Regis, is also likely to come up along Sabarmati Riverfront's west bank. TOI had reported that Marriott International is in talks to set up a hotel under its brand JW Marriott at the Adani Shantigram campus on SG Road. The American hospitality major's existing property in the Ramdevnagar area of Ahmedabad is all set for a revamp and rebranding as Le Meridien. SK Patel, chairman of Kavyaratna Group, said, "We are developing a 210-room hotel, spread over 2.40 lakh sq ft with an investment of around Rs 450 crore. GIFT City is emerging as a global financial hub, offering good opportunities for the hospitality sector." Adani Group is also in advanced talks to develop Aerocity at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, which will house hotels, a convention centre, and retail spaces.

Special public prosecutor appointed for Bodeli fake office case

Vadodara: Prominent Vadodara-based advocate Hitesh Gupta has been appointed as the special public prosecutor in the high-profile fake govt office case from Bodeli in Chhotaudepur district. The case, which surfaced in Oct 2023, involves a bogus office falsely operating under the name of the executive engineer, Irrigation Project Division, Bodeli. The fake office, set up in a commercial complex in the town, had been sending proposals for development works under govt schemes — including the New Gujarat Pattern, Border Village, and Mahila Ghar Angne Pani — for over two years, starting July 2021. These proposals were submitted to the office of the Project Administrator (Tribal Sub-Plan) in Chhotaudepur district and were cleared. Payments totalling Rs 4.15 crore were released based on claims of completed work. The scam was exposed when the actual executive engineer of Irrigation Project Division-2, Bodeli, denied having sent proposals for 12 development works worth Rs 3.74 crore under the Border Village Scheme. He also revealed that no such official office existed in Bodeli under his division. An internal probe followed, uncovering documents and payments related to fraudulent proposals submitted during 2021–22 and 2022–23. A case was registered, and following the investigation, a chargesheet was filed against 11 accused. One of the main accused, Sandip Rajput, passed away in May last year.

NIA searches 15 locations across eight States in Pak.-linked spying case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday (May 31, 2025) conducted a search operation at 15 locations in eight States in a Pakistan-linked espionage case. The searches were carried out on the premises of suspects linked to the Pakistan intelligence operatives in Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and West Bengal. 'NIA teams have seized several electronic gadgets and sensitive financial documents during the searches. These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy,' said the agency. 'The suspects whose premises were searched had connections with Pakistani operatives, and acted as financial conduits for carrying out espionage activities in India,' it said, adding that the NIA registered the case on May 20. The case was instituted following the arrest of an accused person who had been sharing sensitive information with Pakistan intelligence operatives since 2023 and had received funds through various conduits in India in lieu of leaking classified information related to national security. CRPF assistant sub-inspector held Earlier this week, the NIA arrested an assistant sub-inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for allegedly 'sharing sensitive information with Pakistan Intelligence officers'. The CRPF dismissed assistant sub-inspector Moti Ram Jat on May 21, based on the findings. A resident of Rajasthan, Jat had been posted with the 116 Battalion of the CRPF in Jammu & Kashmir, and had been allegedly passing on information to Pakistani officials since 2023. The battalion is deployed in the Pahalgam area, where 26 people were gunned down by terrorists on April 22. It is alleged that the Pakistani officials had approached the CRPF staffer via social media, posing as a woman, and later extracted sensitive information, including on the movement of convoys.
