Celtronic: Ireland's 'longest running' electronic music festival to end

BBC News06-03-2025

An electronic music festival, which is billed as the island of Ireland's longest running event of its kind, is set to end after almost 25 years, organisers have said.Celtronic, which was started by two "very skint" friends in Londonderry in early 2001, has attracted some of the biggest DJs from all over the world and played to thousands of fans over the years.Organiser Gareth Stewart said they "want to end on a high and on their own terms" after "many happy memories running the event". Gareth said it has been a privilege to put on shows in his home city and also give local people an opportunity to perform and "prove that you can be from Derry and have a career in electronic music".
'All good raves must come to an end'
"When most festivals end it's usually because they have gone bankrupt or something terrible has happened, but for us it's simply the right time," Gareth told BBC News NI. "We have invited everyone we wanted to come to Derry and have played almost every venue that we wanted to."Looking back over nearly a quarter of a century of events, Gareth said some of his fondest memories were getting some huge names from across the globe to come and play in Derry. He said getting stand out names like French music producer and DJ Laurent Garnier, England's Dave Clarke and even American musician and songwriter Nile Rodgers from Chic to perform twice, is still a 'pinch yourself moment'. He said that none of this would have been possible without crews, friends and the generations of dancers that continued to flock to their dancefloors.
Couldn't afford to fly so started a festival
The first Celtronic Festival, Gareth said, started as "a wild notion" from very humble beginnings. "I essentially met a guy called Tony Talbot and we were just these two skint young fellas from Shantallow with dreams," he said. "We always wanted to go to this amazing festival called Sónar in Barcelona, but could never afford the tickets - there wasn't any cheap flights like there is nowadays. "I asked him how would we go about doing our own version of that festival right here in Derry, so we applied for funding and - somehow - were successful and we just essentially booked our dream DJs, our dream line up."
Gareth said they really "did not have too much of a plan" but somehow they pulled it off and nearly 25 years later the festival has just kept growing and growing. "We had no intention of where we were going or what we were planning, just do it once and hope for the best," he said."Back then it was an eight day and eight night festival - we had a lot more stamina than we do now."
Gareth said that when they started Celtronic a real aim was to be able to provide a platform for local talent, alongside international talent, to flourish and grow. "We essentially wanted to reverse a trend of always having to import talent, when we wanted to start exporting it," he said."There are now people from this part of the world being able to develop careers in the electronic music industry."One of the most successful of those is a young DJ called Orlagh Dooley (aka Or:la) from Prehen who is playing all the best clubs and festivals all over the world."People like that send a signal to young kids coming up that you can be from Derry and have a career in electronic music, playing clubs in Ibiza or London, wherever."

JoJo Siwa confirms she's ‘head over heels' for Chris Hughes after bed selfie

JoJo Siwa has said her relationship with Chris Hughes is 'not platonic' after months of speculation the pair are dating. In April, American TV and social media star JoJo, 21, entered the Celebrity Big Brother House where she quickly bonded with Chris, 32, best known for his stint on Love Island in 2017. The pair became the subject of much speculation they were more than friends, with their actions raising eyebrows after they were filmed cuddling and giving each other back rubs. On the show JoJo also spoke about no longer identifying as a lesbian and instead 'felt more queer'. At the show's after party JoJo also dumped her partner Kath Ebbs, 27. Since then JoJo and Chris have been spending time together in the UK and US, sharing intimate photos – including one of them in bed together. After being asked if her relationship with Chris was 'platonic or romantic', JoJo was 'silent for a long time staring down at the floor but was smiling ear to ear'. 'It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way,' she shared. Addressing accusations they are engaging in a PR stunt, JoJo pushed back. 'Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now. Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never [before] been in pain from smiling so much,' she added. In the interview JoJo again spoke about identifying as queer, which she said best 'encompasses how I am, and who I am', adding: 'You can't help who you love.' During an appearance on Sunday Brunch yesterday, JoJo spoke about her family's opinion on her new partner. 'She (her mother Jessalynn) does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him, and him and my dad are like best friends,' she said. 'Chris was actually telling me that yesterday they went to the spa together. They're literally best friends. More Trending 'Mum, she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us because I've never seen my mum so happy.' 'It feels like we're a family,' she added. 'It feels like he's been in my family for however many years. It feels like they just all get along as well as I do.' View More » When asked if she had plans to relocate to the UK, she also explained: 'I think there will definitely be a lot more time spent here, and I think from him as well, a lot more time spent over there, but we both have families, you know, on either end.' JoJo Siwa sets sights on another huge UK reality show amid Chris Hughes romance

Singer JoJo Siwa will be spending more time in the UK as she prepares to film the latest celebrity version of a hit Channel 4 reality show - while her romance with Chris Hughes continues JoJo Siwa will soon be back on British TV screens as she has reportedly signed up to take part in another iconic UK reality show. The 22-year-old American singer boosted her profile on the opposite side of the Atlantic in April when she was a contestant on ITV's Celebrity Big Brother. Now it has been reported that JoJo will be popping up on Channel 4 and testing out her cooking skills as a contestant on a celebrity edition of The Great British Bake Off. The celebrity version of the show is part of Channel 4's annual Stand up to Cancer content. ‌ A source said:"This is a bit of a coup for the Bake Off because Jojo is currently one of the most talked about young stars on TV right now. ‌ "She's barely had time to catch her breath, leaving CBB last month amid huge media attention and heading straight into another huge show this month. "It's also a fantastic gig for her because although she already has a fanbase over here, the cookery contest also introduces her to a wider British audience. Plus she got plenty of experience of cooking in front of the cameras while she was on Celebrity Big brother, though this time she won't have hunky Chris to distract her," they added to The Sun. ‌ The American singer got her first break on a reality show in the USA. The star was just 9 years old when she appeared on Dance Moms in 2015, and she appeared on the show across seasons five and six. Earlier this year, she saw her star power rise in the UK as she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. While she entered the iconic reality show house as taken - she was dating Australian influencer Kath Ebbs - but fans were stunned to see her grow close to Love Island star Chris Hughes while in the house. When the show ended, Kath stunned fans when they revealed JoJo had dumped them at the wrap party. Weeks later, JoJo and Chris appeared to confirm that they had embarked on a romance of their own. ‌ Snaps emerged of the singer kissing the 32-year-old British reality star while they were on holiday together in Mexico. They have been gushing over each other via social media comments in the subsequent weeks. Chris recently posted - and swiftly deleted - a steamy bedroom snap of himself with JoJo over the weekend, leaving fans convinced it is proof of their romance. They have enjoyed meals out, bowling, time with family and have made sure to get plenty of moments alone. On Saturday, Chris took a selfie as he kissed JoJo's forehead while tucked up in bed together. Dance Moms star JoJo snuggled into Chris' chest with her eyes closed as the reality star gushed: "Sleeping beauty." The photo wasn't up on Chris' page for long as it was soon deleted. However, it was too late to hide any evidence as many fans, who have been rooting for the couple, were able to screenshot the photo and share it amongst each other.

Gareth Thomas lays bare extent of trolling and death threats after HIV diagnosis

Gareth Thomas has revealed the heartbreaking comments he has received after opening a pub with his husband following his HIV diagnosis Former rugby player Gareth Thomas invited his family to share his debut garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, admitting his HIV diagnosis is "hard for my whole family". Husband Stephen Williams-Thomas finds he is praised as a "great man" for marrying the star. "It's like you're a faulty good," says Gareth, speaking candidly. The couple run a pub together, Ty-risha in Bridgend, but Gareth, 50, endures negative comments, including about him helping in the kitchen. ‌ "Somebody said, 'I'm not going to come there for food in case Gareth peels the chips.' And I was like, well, why wouldn't he come here? 'In case he cuts his finger.' ‌ "That's a discriminative comment, but purely just because of his ignorance and lack of knowledge." However, Gareth, whose Tackle HIV Challenging Stigma garden features at the flower show, says he remains "hands on" behind the bar. "I'm fully hands on," he says. "There's interaction with society, the bar is almost like a security. "I can pull the perfect pint, though some people actually said to me that it looked like a map of the world when I tried to do a shamrock." ‌ The Welsh rugby union star was diagnosed with HIV in 2012, and revealed to the Sunday Mirror that he had contracted the virus in an emotional interview in 2019. But he finds he endures more discrimination every time he opens up about the issue. Gareth has received death threats for his efforts to reduce the stigma of HIV, but sees his role as a campaigner to persevere. "People scream in my face - but I absorb that discrimination, and I see it as an opportunity for them to learn," he says."If somebody comes to you with hatred and you go back around with hatred, then it's never solved. ‌ "Hatred can create more hatred. If somebody comes to me with hatred and I come back with love, then their hatred is almost diminished. "And I don't want to be that person who comes back with hatred. I want to represent the community." He continues: "Sadly, we live in an environment where I have to assess my environment every day. Thank God I've got my family's support. "But I put everything into playing rugby. So I put everything into being a campaigner as I did through my rugby. I have that mentality. If you make me the underdog, then I'll come back until you make me the favourite. I want to be an example." ‌ His parents and husband, Stephen, visited his garden for a VIP event last week. Gareth said it was important for him to include running water, to replicate the effect nature had on him when he was struggling with his diagnosis. "Nature saved me when I was feeling suicidal," he said. * The Tackle HIV Challenging Stigma Garden features at the Chelsea Flower Show 2025, designed by Manoj Malde.
