Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd joins ownership group of Premier League club Everton
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has joined the ownership group of Premier League club Everton.
The 52-year-old has joined Roundhouse Capital Holdings, an entity within The Friedkin Group (TFG), which completed its takeover of Everton in December. Everton executive chairman Marc Watts said in a news release that Kidd will be an 'incredible resource' for the club.

Kidd, an NBA great, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 and twice won gold medals with the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team as a player. He has coached the Mavericks since 2021, having previously coached the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Kidd has previously expressed interest in Premier League ownership, having been part of a five-person consortium that made an offer to buy Crystal Palace in November.
'I'm honoured to be joining Everton's ownership at such an important moment: with a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it's a great moment to come on board,' Kidd said.
Watts added: 'As one of the NBA's greatest players and now a successful coach, his knowledge and winning mentality will be an incredible resource for Everton. He is a respected leader and household name for many sports fans and will bring a deeper understanding of high performance as we collectively strive to build a brighter future.'
We are delighted to announce a further addition to the Club's ownership group.

TFG agreed to buy former majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri's 94 per cent stake in Everton in September and received regulatory approval in December, bringing an end to a long-running ownership saga at the club.
After manager Sean Dyche was relieved of his duties in January and David Moyes was installed as his replacement, Everton's relegation fears have been eased and the club are 13th in the table, 17 points clear of the drop zone.
Everton are due to move into their new 52,000-capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Kidd's involvement with Roundhouse draws parallels with other English soccer clubs.
This kind of structure, whereby U.S.-based owners bring on board prominent sporting stars as minority investors, is already in place at EFL sides Birmingham City with Tom Brady and Burnley with JJ Watt. Premier League side Bournemouth, controlled by Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley, also has Michael B. Jordan as a minority owner.
Kidd's financial contribution will be relatively small in Premier League terms and there will be no change to the overall ownership or day-to-day running of Everton. Unlike fellow Roundhouse newcomer Christopher Sarofim, whose family business Fayez Sarofim and Co manages around $30billion in assets, he will not be joining the Everton board as an observer.
While Sarofim, as a high-net-worth individual, is likely to help the club access capital in future, as well as providing financial and commercial expertise, there is a sense that having a high-profile American sports figure like Kidd on board will be good for the Everton brand stateside — a priority for the Houston-based TFG early in its tenure.
With the Sarofim family also possessing a minority stake in the Houston Texans of the NFL, Everton now have links to two major Texas sporting franchises. There will be potential opportunities for collaboration, particularly on the content side with the Mavericks. The move could also see the informal sharing of best sporting practices between Kidd and Everton.
These feel like positive steps for the club. In bringing Kidd and Sarofim on board, the sense right now is that Everton finally have owners ready to take advantage of their untapped potential.

Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man'
Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man' Kobe Bryant, the late Los Angeles Lakers great, was one of the greatest basketball players and overall athletes of all time. He led the Lakers to five NBA championships, and he was not only one of the greatest crunch-time performers ever but, in the minds of some, he was possibly the greatest closer ever. Even when the Lakers were down by double digits in the fourth quarter of a game, fans often thought there was still a chance the team could pull out a victory because of Bryant's exploits under pressure and his lack of fear. Like anyone else, he had his share of lowlights, and one of the worst moments of his career came when L.A. was embarrassed in the 2008 NBA Finals by the archrival Boston Celtics. It lost Game 6, 131-92, in Boston as the Celtics claimed their 17th championship, and although the Celtics were ahead by a wide margin down the stretch, head coach Doc Rivers could still feel the fear that Bryant always put in the minds and hearts of opponents. Celtics defensive coordinator Tom Thibodeau wanted Rivers to take his starters out midway through the fourth quarter, but Rivers refused because he feared that Bryant could get L.A. back in the game. Via Fox Sports: 'Game 6 was terrific,' Rivers said. 'That's a moment that I remember in 2008. The funniest moment, Kobe knows this, but we were up 1,000 [points] in Game 6 and the guy who you would least expect walks over to me during the game -- Tom Thibodeau -- and he asks me, 'Are you going to sub out? There's six minutes and we're up 42 points.' 'Of all the guys to say that, it's Tom Thibodeau. And I looked over there at the Lakers and Kobe was still on the floor, and I actually said, 'When Phil [Jackson] takes that guy out, I take my guys out.' And Thibs said, 'You're safe.' And I said, 'Not with that guy on the floor.' 'I was dead serious. I had obviously lost my mind because it was a 42-point lead. But he put that fear in you, man. He could run off threes. I was obviously not good at math, so I was worried about him. Then finally Phil took him out so I could sub. It was good.' The type of deficit the Lakers faced in the fourth quarter of that game was one even Bryant couldn't overcome. The embarrassment they suffered bonded the team together, and coming into next season, it was clearly on a mission. It won the 2009 NBA title, but it defeated the Orlando Magic and not the Celtics. The Lakers finally got another shot at the men in green in the 2010 finals, and this time, they won it all, as they overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter of Game 7. Bryant shot 6-of-24 from the field in that seventh game, but he played very well for most of the second half and especially in the fourth quarter, as he found ways to be efficient offensively while also contributing in other areas. For those who paid attention to his excellent play down the stretch of the game, it reinforced his image as arguably basketball's ultimate closer.

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George
Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paul George's first season with the Philadelphia 76ers didn't turn out the way the franchise thought it would. Due to injuries to George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers missed the playoffs. The outcome was far from being title contenders, the reason why the star forward joined the organization. Advertisement On the bright side, Philly secured the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They could either use it to draft a promising prospect or put it in a trade package and acquire another All-Star player. There have been speculations on what the Sixers should do with the draft pick. If the team decides to strike a deal with another franchise and trade the pick, Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey has a suggestion. Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George controls the ball against Phoenix Suns forward Ryan Streicher-Imagn Images According to Bailey's trade proposal, the Sixers could consider making a deal with the Phoenix Suns. Using the No. 3 pick, packaged with George and a few other future draft picks, they could convince the Western Conference team to trade All-Star guard Devin Booker. Advertisement "Adding that pick to two more firsts and a far-future pick swap would give the Suns a good batch of draft assets to tip off a rebuild. And trading George somewhere down the line for more assets wouldn't be out of the question either," Bailey wrote. With Booker, the 76ers are secure over the next three seasons. The former Kentucky guard has three years left in his four-year, $220 million contract. Also, the Sixers could be a better team for the 6-foot-6 guard, since they are aiming to contend for the title. It will also be an easier situation for Philly to dump George's four-year, $212 million maximum contract. The veteran forward will be 36 years old by the time he finishes the third year of his deal. Additionally, the nine-time All-Star's recent injury woes won't be helpful for the Sixers in the future. NBA Trade Rumors Buzzing Around 76ers Ahead of Draft
NBA Trade Rumors Buzzing Around 76ers Ahead of Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia 76ers were rewarded with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft lottery after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018. On paper, the 76ers had one of the best star trios in Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey. However, injuries prevented the team from reaching its true potential in their first year together. Advertisement Because they secured a top-three pick for the upcoming draft, the Sixers can do two things with it. The organization could either use the pick and draft a young prospect or trade for additional assets. Using the latter would strengthen their roster and give them more depth to contend for a championship. Philadelphia 76ers president of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey speaks with the Streicher-Imagn Images According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, there's a belief among some league executives that the 76ers will trade back ahead of the draft. "NBA teams are pondering what the Sixers will do in the upcoming draft. Regardless of what Daryl Morey states publicly, some league executives believe trade-back talks could occur before the draft," Pompey posted on X. "One executive said a couple of teams behind the Sixers in the draft are doing heavy research on the possibility of moving up to No. 3." The Sixers have enough star power to make noise and be championship contenders. However, injuries have prevented the team from asserting dominance and reaching a certain level of power in the NBA. Advertisement Using the pick could be a safer bet for the Sixers since it would secure the team's future. That is if they potentially move on from Embiid and trade George with his $212 million contract.
