Former NBA Players Crown Shai Gilgeous-Alexander As The Greatest Thunder Player Ever: Major Disrespect To Kevin Durant And Russell Westbrook

Yahoo2 days ago

After their convincing victory in the opening games of their latest series (against the Minnesota Timberwolves), the Oklahoma City Thunder are now just two wins away from their first NBA Finals appearance since 2012. As the reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander deserves a lot of credit for his Thunder run, and some have already started calling him the greatest player in Thunder franchise history.
"He's the greatest Thunder of all time," said Kendrick Perkins on NBA Today. "He already joined the company of Michael Jordan this year with three consecutive seasons shooting over 50%. He hoisted up the MVP trophy and now he's on his way to going to the NBA Finals and he's going to win the NBA championship and he's going to become Finals MVP. We're watching a young man right now who is the best perimeter player in the game of basketball. He's unguardable."

Perkins was part of the Thunder team that made the Finals in 2012 and he saw the greatness of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook for himself. Yet, somehow, he's already seen enough to crown SGA as the "greatest Thunder ever." Surprisingly, he's not the only former player to make that argument.
"It's hard not to think this dude is the greatest Thunder of all time," said Chandler Parsons on Fan Duel TV. "As good as Russ was with the MVP and triple-doubles, and Kevin Durant, and James Harden, this guy's a different level when you win a championship, especially in this city, in this market."
It's easy to appreciate what Shai is doing right now and he certainly deserves a lot of praise for his performance this season with averages of 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game on 51.9% shooting. But with just seven years of experience in the league, and six with the Thunder, it's borderline disrespectful to rank him over other franchise legends.
Right now, Kevin Durant still has a stronger argument for being the best Thunder ever. In nine seasons with the franchise, he averaged 27.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game on 48.3% shooting. He was an All-Star seven times and won the MVP in 2014 while averaging 32.0 points per game.

Of course, many Thunder fans would argue that Russell Westbrook has the best case as the franchise's greatest athlete. He leads the team in points with 18,859 over 11 years with the team. As a 9x All-Star, MVP, and 2x scoring champ, Westbrook was the face of the Thunder for many years and he was beloved by the fans during his best years there.
As good as Shai is, his resume doesn't yet hold up against legends like Durant and Westbrook, who are considered among the top 75 greatest players ever. Fortunately for Shai, he has a chance to strengthen his case if he wins the championship this year.
After winning his first MVP, SGA has the Thunder in position to make a serious championship run, and it'd be the first in the franchise's storied history. For that feat alone, Shai would qualify as the greatest player in franchise history,y but the job is not done yet.
Heading to Minnesota, the Thunder will face their biggest test yet in Game 3 as they look to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. Even if they advance to the Finals, there's no guarantee they'd beat whoever comes out of the East between the Pacers and Knicks. At the very least, Shai will give them a chance to win and his legacy will take a major leap if he manages to become an NBA champion at 26 years old.

Tanner McKee lands behind two Eagles castoffs in recent backup QB ranking

Tanner McKee lands behind two Eagles castoffs in recent backup QB ranking Eagles' Tanner McKee lands behind Gardner Minshew and Marcus Mariota in a ranking of NFL backup quarterbacks Once upon a time, there was a saying. It went something like this. The most popular player on many NFL rosters is the backup quarterback. It makes sense, sort of. Strangely, that may still be true in some areas based on the theory's intention, but nothing could be further from the truth in the Philadelphia Eagles organization. This is Jalen Hurts' team, and there's no debating that. While the originator of the above statement can't be determined or credited, the analysis makes sense when dissected further. Pro football is a win-now environment. Many fan bases grow weary with their starter quickly if he isn't performing and want quick fixes. Chants for the backup quarterback can sometimes grow louder when he's highly touted and charismatic. Fortunately, Philadelphia doesn't have those problems. A legitimate MVP candidate leads their quarterback room. Joining him in the meeting room this summer is a proven backup, Tanner McKee. The former Stanford Cardinal standout has proven he has potential and can play at a high level. The third quarterback on the depth chart features a battle between a once-exciting prospect that lands in Philadelphia by way of a trade (Dorian Thompson-Robinson) and a rookie sixth-round choice, Kyle McCord. The quarterback room could evoke league-wide envy. The Eagles are stocked but, by the looks of things, somewhat underappreciated. Tanner McKee lands in the bottom half of a ranking of backup NFL quarterbacks. No Eagles coach or player needs to be told that Tanner McKee has what it takes to play football at the highest level. No fan needs that reminder. No member of the Philadelphia roster needs an explanation. It appears, however, that the national media could benefit from some newer scouting reports. Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano ranked the NFL's backup quarterbacks ahead of the 2025 season. McKee lands just past the midway point at 19. Here's the explanation. "McKee made the most of his Week 18 start against the New York Giants, who were more than ready for their offseason vacation. (He) completed 27-of-41 passes for 269 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The lone start was impressive enough for the team to trade (Kenny) Pickett to the Browns. McKee lacks experience but has the luxury of playing on a loaded team in case he needs to step in for Jalen Hurts." Pickett, the man Tanner sat behind on the depth chart last season, lands four spots behind McKee at 23. Here's more: "It wouldn't be a surprise if the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job this summer play musical chairs with the depth chart order. According to reports, Pickett is getting the first crack at the starting gig, but Dillon Gabriel has had some reps with the first-team offense. We'll pencil in Pickett as QB2 here for Week 1 because Gabriel has impressed the local reporters in Cleveland. It appears popular rookie Shedeur Sanders and veteran Joe Flacco have fallen behind in the rotation of arms." McKee's ranking seems too low. Again, perhaps updated scouting reports were needed as two former Birds, Gardner Minshew II and Marcus Mariota, land at 14 and seven, respectively. Neither is a better player than Tanner, and though they both have shown promise at various points in their careers, both have done little recently to warrant top 15 rankings. The eyeball test is all that's needed here. There's no way Mariota is the seventh-best backup in the NFL. There's no way Jaxson Dart, ranked fifth, is that much better than McKee when the rookie hasn't even taken a snap yet. While Manzano always delivers quality work, slotting McKee so low is a headscratcher. Then again, we're entering June. We have all summer, so none of this should matter now.

Patrick Mahomes makes bold Travis Kelce claim following Super Bowl dud as retirement rumors swirl

Patrick Mahomes sees a very different Travis Kelce at Chiefs camp as retirement rumors continue to swirl around the star tight end. Mahomes was asked about Kelce at Chiefs' OTAs on Friday and the possibility of it being his final season. But the former MVP doesn't see someone who looks like he is on his way out of the NFL. Advertisement Instead, he sees a Kelce who is more engaged than ever after a poor season by his standards that ended with a loss in Super Bowl 2025 to the Eagles. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) following the game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 2025. Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images 'If it's the last ride, you would never know,' Mahomes said. 'The way he's talking about football, the way he's talking about working and trying to be even better this year than he was last year, he doesn't seem like a guy like it's his last ride, like he's tired of the job.' Kelce, 35, is coming off a season in which he had 97 receptions for a career-low 823 yards and just three touchdowns – also the worst output of his career. Advertisement He wasn't much better in the playoffs, making just 13 catches for 175 yards, one touchdown and seven first downs, as the Chiefs failed to complete a historic three-peat. Kelce particularly struggled in Super Bowl 2025, with four catches for 39 yards. The underwhelming postseason raised questions about Kelce's future as he enters the final year of his two-year, $34 million contract. 'I think he feels better than last year before going into last season. I think he's motivated to go out there and have an even better year than he had this last.' Advertisement Kelce is coming off a relatively quiet offseason, after one filled with trips to girlfriend Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. The couple, which has engagement rumors swirling around them, stayed very much out of the public eye outside of a few date nights, including one recently in Florida. It will remain to be seen if Kelce's seeming heightened focus will lead to results on the field.
