Adults living with chronic pain cite long NHS waiting times among reasons for not getting treated

FOUR in five people living with chronic pain are hiding their condition – held back by stigma, ineffective treatments, and long NHS waiting times, it's been found.
Research of 4,000 adults found 54 per cent of those not seeking support blamed long waits for treatment via the health service.

Nearly half (45 per cent) are suffering in silence due to scepticism from friends, family, and colleagues.
Meanwhile, 40 per cent worry about appearing "weak", and 33 per cent simply don't want to be a burden.
Among those who have sought help, 17 per cent reported that traditional treatments aren't working, leaving 41 per cent desperate for alternative pain management options.
The research was commissioned for Curaleaf Clinic's Pain Unmasked campaign, which aims to expose the hidden realities of living with chronic pain.
Dr Simon Erridge, research director at the medical cannabis clinic, said: 'With traditional treatments failing many, chronic pain patients are left suffering in silence.
'Evidence for medical cannabis is growing, and demand is rising - we have seen a 34 per cent increase in chronic pain patients in the last year - yet many still don't know how to access it.
'Greater awareness and support are needed to ensure patients get the treatment they deserve."
It is estimated that close to 28 million people in the UK suffer from chronic pain conditions, and the emotional toll is severe.
Everyday activities like sleeping (44 per cent), exercising (40 per cent), socialising (28 per cent), and maintaining relationships (15 per cent) are significantly impacted.
And one in five (20 per cent) experience isolation due to their pain.

To highlight these hidden struggles, Curaleaf Clinic's campaign brings chronic pain sufferers' experiences to life through art.
Collaborating with artist Hayley Wall and three pain sufferers – influencer Mesha Moinirad (CORR), and patients Fran Taylor and Ryan Swanepoel (CORR) – the campaign transforms real pain into physical masks, revealing the emotional burden of masking their condition.
Ryan Swanepoel, who has limb girdle muscular dystrophy, a condition which causes weakness and wasting of the muscles around the hips and shoulders, said: "For years, I kept the full extent of my pain hidden - it felt like no one truly understood or knew how to manage it.
'I tried traditional treatments, but they changed who I was and carried risks that made long-term use impossible.
'It wasn't until I discovered medical cannabis that I finally found some form of relief. It's transformed my life, and more people deserve to know this option is out there.'
Fran Taylor, who is living with endometriosis, added: 'Endometriosis has controlled my life for 12 years, leaving me waiting endlessly for effective treatment.

'I was dismissed and misunderstood for so long, feeling completely isolated. Pain shouldn't be suffered in silence - we need to speak up, advocate for ourselves, and get the support we deserve.'
Opioids have been one of the most commonly prescribed medications for chronic pain, but only 39 per cent of patients find prescription painkillers such as these most effective.
Nearly as many (33 per cent) are now finding alternative therapies like acupuncture, creative therapies (e.g. painting, sculpture) and medical cannabis provide the most relief.
However, despite the legalisation of medical cannabis in 2018, awareness and access remain major barriers - with 16 per cent of sufferers unaware it is legal and 18 per cent unsure how to access it.
Nearly a third of pain patients (30 per cent) would like to speak to their GP about medical cannabis as a treatment option and 26 per cent would be open to trying it if available on the NHS.
Dr Simon Erridge added: 'We provide evidence-backed insights to campaign for greater availability.
'Government support is critical to expanding access for current and future patients.
'Without funding for research and the political will to help medical cannabis patients, progress towards NHS access has stalled.
'No one should be left struggling when potential solutions exist."

Get some gently exercise
Everyday activities like walking, swimming, gardening and dancing can ease some of the pain directly by blocking pain signals to the brain.
Activity can also help lessen pain by stretching stiff and tense muscles, ligaments and joints.
Breathe right
Concentrating on your breathing when you're in pain can help.
When pain is intense, rather than taking shallow, rapid breaths, breathe slowly and deeply.
The Pain Toolkit is a booklet packed with simple practical advice on how to live better with long-term pain.
The British Pain Society's website also has a number of booklets and patient information leaflets about managing pain.
Talking therapies
Some people find it useful to get help from a psychologist or hypnotherapist to discover how to deal with their emotions in relation to their pain.
Distract yourself
Shift your attention on to something else so the pain is not the only thing on your mind.
This could involve getting stuck into an activity that you enjoy or find stimulating.
Cure sleep problems
Many people with long-term pain find it difficult to sleep at night, and sleep deprivation can make pain worse.
Go to bed at the same time each evening, and get up at a regular time in the morning.
Avoid taking naps in the day, and if sleep problems persist, see a GP.

ITV Granada Reports' correspondent Rob Smith has been speaking the parents of Matthew Lock. The family of a teenager who took his own life say it "kills them everyday" that they did not understand his "busy mind", as they issue a stark warning about the increased risks of addiction and suicide connected to ADHD. The parents of 19-year-old Matthew Lock say their son was an "incredible individual" who "wanted to make a change", but he struggled with the symptoms of his diagnosis before his death in 2023. They say Matthew, who appeared on ITV's This Morning as a technology reviewer, used alcohol and ketamine to try to ease his ADHD symptoms because medication did not agree with him. Richard and Christine Lock believe ADHD caused Matthew, who also had autism, to make an "impulsive" decision to take his own life, because he was "unable to regulate his emotions at certain times". "We know Matthew's decision was an impulse," Christine said. "We know he would want us to help stop others from making impulsive acts, causing devastation to families." What is ADHD and what are the symptoms? ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Around 1 in 20 children are estimated to be impacted by ADHD globally and, according to the NHS, symptoms of usually start before the age of 12. They involve a person's ability to pay attention to things, having high energy levels, and their ability to control their impulses. A child or young person may show signs of being inattentive, such as: being easily distracted finding it hard to listen to what people are saying or to follow instructions forgetting everyday tasks, like brushing their teeth or putting on socks They may show signs of being hyperactive and impulsive, including: having high energy levels fidgeting or tapping their hands and feet talking noisily feeling restless, or getting up and moving around when they're supposed to sit still finding it hard to wait their turn, or interrupting conversations His parents believe his death is directly linked to ADHD and are now part of an NHS task force trying to speed up diagnosis, improve treatment and raise awareness of its potential route to addiction and mental illness. The task force is also looking to improve NHS data and analyses on ADHD services, map out who provides ADHD services and how they are commissioned locally, and improving the way services are delivered. "It's very important that we make those changes in Matthew's name", Richard said. "ADHD can be an absolute superpower. They can think outside the box and be so creative. "We saw that superpower from Matthew, but the other side started to take over. That's the bit we didn't know about and that's what kills us everyday." Matthew's parents say they regret not understanding ADHD in more depth before their son's death and have urged other parents in a similar position to know the signs. Christine added: "It's the head full of thoughts and busy mind that you can't calm. I think going out and drinking did calm him. "It's understanding. Once you understand the ADHD brain, it's a fantastic. But if it's not understood it can cause problems." Speaking in March 2024, when the task force was announced, NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard said: "We have recognised that that more needs to be done to ensure people can get a timely diagnosis and importantly, that all of their needs are addressed. "This is a vital first step in helping us achieve real improvements in the ADHD services that the NHS and the independent sector provides.' Matthew's parents have also setup their own ADHD charity, dedicated to "education and raising awareness" as well as trying to ensure people are diagnosed and treated earlier in their lives.

Scientists have begun an attempt to create human genetic code from raw chemicals, as a once-taboo area of research gains fresh momentum. Backed by £10 million from the Wellcome Trust, the five-year SynHG project will work on creating tools to aid synthetic genomics — in which instead of editing existing DNA, researchers aim to write the genetic code from scratch. Every cell in the body contains DNA (except mature red blood cells and platelets), which provides the instructions for producing the proteins that form the building blocks of life. Flaws or mutations in this code are the cause of a wide range of diseases. • NHS to offer whole genome sequencing to every newborn baby Supporters of synthetic genomics argue that learning how to assemble DNA will help unlock its secrets, transforming our understanding of human biology and allowing the creation of novel treatments for diseases that currently have no cure. However, the idea of creating human genetic material in the lab has long raised ethical concerns, from the spectre of synthetic 'designer babies' to unforeseen effects on future generations. The new project, led by Professor Jason Chin of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, will bring together teams from the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester and Kent and Imperial College London. The aim is not to build an entire synthetic human genome — a complete set of genetic instructions, written in DNA — but to lay the technical groundwork, starting with the construction of a single human chromosome. Alongside the technical work, a group led by Professor Joy Zhang of the University of Kent will scrutinise the moral, legal and social implications of genome synthesis. Wellcome, the world's largest medical research charity, believes the potential benefits of the project outweigh the risks. So far, scientists have successfully developed synthetic genomes for microbes such as E. coli, a type of bacteria. The field has accelerated in recent years, however, fuelled by advances in machine learning, data science and AI. Even so, today's technology is not able to produce large, more complex sections of genetic material, such as those that give rise to crops, animals and humans. Michael Dunn, director of discovery research at Wellcome, said: 'Our DNA determines who we are and how our bodies work and with recent technological advances, the SynHG project is at the forefront of one of the most exciting areas of scientific research. 'Through creating the necessary tools and methods to synthesise a human genome we will answer questions about our health and disease that we cannot even anticipate yet, in turn transforming our understanding of life and wellbeing.'
