The Liberian-flagged cargo vessel sank off the Kochi coast a few weeks ago, spilling large quantities of plastic pellets (nurdles) that travelled across the Arabian Sea and into the Bay of Bengal. Initial traces were spotted along Kanyakumari's coast late last month. Now, about 80 bags — estimated to weigh around two tonnes — have washed up at key locations in Ramanathapuram district, including Dhanushkodi's old church ruins, Irattaithalai, and Mugandharayan chathiram.
Speaking to TOI, district collector Simrajeet Singh confirmed the launch of a full-scale beach clean-up operation and said, "The recovered bags are being secured and kept at a safe place. Other beach clean-up activity is ongoing as per the SOP issued by the govt. Sanitary workers from Rameswaram and nearby local bodies are engaged, along with Aapda Mithras, and an all-out effort to clean the coast is underway. The impact on the ecosystem — both short-term and long-term — is also being studied by an expert agency engaged by the govt.
"
Forest officials and environmental teams are on high alert as the sanctuary lies within the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. It is home to 128 species of birds, including greater and lesser flamingos, and supports a variety of marine life such as sea turtles, molluscs, crustaceans, and fish. The region's fragile sand dunes, salt marshes, and seagrass beds also lie along the Central Asian Flyway, used by thousands of migratory birds annually.

Ship on Fire: Hydrocarbon release detected near fuel tank of burning ship

The salvage team that had been engaged in the firefighting operation and rescue operation of the ship M V Wan Hai 503 that caught fire off the coast of Kerala on June 9 observed hydrocarbon release near the fuel tank of the burning ship, raising concerns. According to the latest situation report released by government agencies, the Salvage Master observations confirmed ongoing hydrocarbon release, with potential involvement of the fuel tanks. The presence of hydrocarbon vapours indicates possible heat transfer near fuel tanks. The authorities have been keenly watching the developments in the ship, as there was a chance for a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). As the fire is raging near the fuel tank of the ship, the liquid form of the fuel may evaporate, and the vapour, which is more dangerous as it evaporates in the presence of high temperature, will lead to an explosion. The vessel remains structurally afloat but poses continued risk due to onboard hazardous cargo. The ship is also drifting within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships and aircraft are engaged in intensive firefighting operations, even as the vessel drifts in a south-easterly direction, approximately 42 nautical miles from Beypore, Kerala. The fire remains active but is under steady control due to ongoing boundary cooling and firefighting efforts. Carrying 2128 metric tonnes of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, the vessel poses a significant threat to the marine environment and nearby shipping routes. Continuous and determined firefighting efforts by the ICG have significantly contained the blaze, with only smoke now visible across the cargo holds and bays. However, the fire persists in the inner decks and areas near the fuel tanks. While the immediate focus remains on extinguishing the fire, parallel efforts were undertaken to pull it away from the coast and avert a potential ecological disaster. Containing the fire and towing the vessel to a safer location remain top priorities of the agencies.

Towline connected to burning ship to shift it from Kerala coast: Official

As the fire on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship containing hazardous and flammable cargo off the coast of Kerala continued on the third day, a joint team of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the MERC Salvage Master connected a tow line to the still-burning ship as part of efforts to move it away from the Indian coastline, officials familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. Though the blaze on the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 has been largely contained, the fire persists in the inner decks and areas near the fuel tanks, said ICG officials said. Since the vessel, carrying 122,128 metric tonnes of fuel and hundreds of containers including hazardous cargo, continued to drift within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around 42 nautical miles from Beypore port in Kerala, officials have deemed it important to douse the fire and parallelly tow the ship away from the coast. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, an ICG chopper was able to winch five members of the salvage team and an aircrew diver onto the forward bay of the burning vessel so as to connect the ship to a tug boat, an official said. 'With the assistance of the ICG, the MERC crew was able to get onto the ship while it was still burning and connect a tow line using the tug boat 'Water Lily'. It's a big achievement since fire is still reported to be raging within the inner decks. It was a difficult operation,' Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, member secretary of the Kerala state disaster management authority (SDMA), said. Another official said that five ships of the ICG, two Dornier aircraft, and one chopper are involved in the operation, along with two vessels provided by the Directorate General of Shipping. The vessel's owners have appointed a salvage team to assist the ICG, while the Indian Air Force has been requested to provide further aerial support. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said on Tuesday that the containers which fell into the sea from the Singapore-flagged vessel were likely to drift towards sections of the Kerala coast, Tamil Nadu coast and even Sri Lanka based on wind and ocean patterns. Of the 1,754 containers onboard the vessel, at least 157 are reported to be carrying hazardous cargo including pesticides, liquid and solid chemicals, styrene and other forms of micro-plastics. While it is not clear how many containers have fallen into the sea, officials have confirmed several of them in the water and many of them burst open due to the fire.

ZP builds dining halls in govt schools to serve midday meals

Mysuru: The zilla panchayat of Mysuru is now undertaking the construction of dining halls in govt-run schools to facilitate midday meals. During the 2024-25 financial year, the zilla panchayat approved the construction of dining halls at 32 govt schools across the district under the scheme. The ZP, which successfully developed kitchen halls and kitchen gardens in empty spaces in govt schools, has now taken up the construction of dining halls as an added feature. Such initiatives by the ZP not only play a crucial role in reducing malnutrition among students who benefit from the midday meals scheme, but the vegetables grown in kitchen gardens also improve the quality of education. As the majority of children of farmers and villagers study in govt-run schools, the ZP, which initiated various measures to strengthen govt schools with the construction of compound walls and separate toilets for girls under the MNREGA scheme, is now promoting the Akshara Dasoha Midday Meals scheme. Due to the lack of dining hall facilities, students were squatting and consuming midday meals on verandas, inside their classrooms, in corridors of their schools, or under the trees in their school premises. Now, the construction of dining halls with seating facilities will ease such problems for them. Schools can also utilise the dining halls to conduct special classes or other school work during emergencies, officials said. Utilising the local job card holders registered under the MNREGA scheme in gram panchayat, the ZP not only provides jobs for them but also involves them in the construction of dining halls. Among the 32 dining hall construction projects, the ZP has already completed the construction of such facilities in state-run schools like Magudilu, Gavadagere, Vaddambalu, and Harohalli, which come under Husenapura gram panchayat of Hunsur taluk. It also constructed the same in Kanagalu, Hundimala, Hosakote, Chikkmalali, Udbur, Badaga, Kampalapura, and Uyyamballi in Periyapatna taluk. The ZP spent a total of 84.4 lakh for the construction of all these dining halls and also provided 3,489 mandays of work for job card holders registered in the scheme. The ZP has also taken up the construction of dining halls at a cost of Rs 1.75 lakh. During 2025-26, the ZP has also taken up the construction of dining halls in more than eight village schools in Saligrama, HD Kote, Periyapatna, and Hunsur taluks. It gave instructions to use vitrified tiles for flooring. Speaking to TOI, zilla panchayat chief executive officer S Ukesh Kumar said that the ZP initiated this project of constructing dining halls with the main intention of facilitating midday meals as well as strengthening govt-run schools with such facilities, besides ensuring jobs for MNREGA labourers identified under the scheme. "The construction of such a facility has helped our children to consume midday meals in dining halls as most of them were consuming food under the tree, veranda, corridors, and inside classrooms," said Mahadevaiah, a resident of Hosakempaiahanahundi in T Narasipura taluk.
